Black African Magic

I've been obsessed with this strain since I first encountered it. I had always read that this strain came from Nigeria. Since I could not find this strain anymore I decided to see if I could recreate it at home. In my research of this plant I found that it is not only the genetics that made the bud black and powerfull but it is the cure.
I decided to find out for myself. I put a fair amount of bud that was jar cured for seven weeks in a brown paper bag and put it deep in some black rich composted soil. I left it there for twelve days. On that day I pulled out the soggy broken down bag to find soggy broken down bud. The bud was dark green and much heavyer than the jar cured bud. It also smelled of ammonia and turned moldy. I let it air dry from soggy bud to moist bud and then put it in it's own jar as to not rot the other bud. I let it dry/rot/cure to dark brown for four
months. (I think I found a way to black cure some bud at home)
The bud smoked harsher the the original fms grapefruit haze but it was not bad at all. It was about twice the power though and it was hard for myself and a buddy to finish a
single joint that was cut with less potent bud.
If I were to cange anything I would put it in cotton cloth not a paper bag. Also I would bury it in damp compost. Before I forget I did add about a fair amount of urine to the compost to kick things up a notch or two. All in all it worked. The longer it sat was the stronger and smoother it smoked. I will always black cure at least a portion of my buds from now on.

Interesting read monkeykush, I have also thought that it would be a fermentation cure that makes the bud that way.

I have heard of many ways the local Africans here sweat and ferment their weed. It almost always dried in the sun. I'm sure this adds to the high in the end as sun dried bud seems to give some strange highs.

Also, I've noticed that most of the cheap African street weed is immaturely harvested and anyone familiar with Sativas will know the effects of a very early harvested Sativa.

An older African buddy of mine told me they would sun dry the heads then wrap them tightly in news paper or brown paper and burry them in hot composting steaming cow manure for a few days checking it regularly so as not to mold. When it reached a dark green/black colour it was removed and dried. He said it was usualy about 3 or so days in the hot manure. I imagine the high microbial activity in the composting manure may aid in the fast break down of the chlorophyll.

I don't think the buds are supposed to heavily mold. I think the high heat, moisture and microbes turn the buds dark quickly over a course of a few days and break down the stuff that makes the smoke harsh before mold can really set in.

I'm glad someone is doing these tests.

Good luck with the experimenting, Ah.

African herbman the mold did die off once the bud was completely dry. I must say that the power was serious. Next time the compost will be drier and I will let it cure a little longer in the compost. This experiment I proformed proves that a weaker bud can be doubled or trippled in strength. Just add compost urine and time.

ALLOW ME TO INTERJECT.

Way back when(early nineties), I used to get this stuff from Jamaica that was identical to the description that DJ Short gives of BAM in his book. The buds were stringy, sparse, compressed and had a greasy/waxy feeling. It had that rotting meat/putrid type of smell with a faint ammonia smell in the background; which leads me to believe that it was fermented/sweat cured. The smoke was among the densest I've ever seen, the taste however left something to be desired. The high was very intense, ceilingless, and unrelenting. Novices had a hard time with this one, full on sativa rush with a good dose of paranoia for good measure that would transition into a really heavy sedative effect. This was very, very strong weed that could hold its own with any of todays strains, and then some.

My point is that this weed was imported from Jamaica, I know that for a fact because I knew the importers. I believe that what most people in North America refer to as BAM is in all probability a variety very similar to what I had at that time from Jamaica. Most people have no clue where their imported weed came from; other than what they are told by their dealer(we know they're reliable and well informed). The likelihood of weed making it from Africa to North America is far less than the probability of it making it from Jamaica to NA. I am not saying that African weed hasn't been imported from Africa to NA, only that it is far less (by orders of magnitude) than what has been brought in from Jamaica.:2cents:

I too have heard that this black african herb comes from gogam, gogem? valley in ethiopia.. I have also heard that they mightve wrapped the herbs in banana leaves and buried it and left to decompose for a while...i believe seedbay has ethiopian highland seeds..at least they did this weekend

That Cannabis is a Holy Sacrament from times of antiquity ..... herb that grew in the valley of Gojam in Ethiopia, the most powerful ganja on the planet, ...
http://yhvhathome.multiply.com/journal/item/170 :D

This is the legend I have always understood to be the truth.

Currently, I am growing some Ethiopian Highland F3
I sprouted 3 seeds to begin and, two are vigorous bright green with thick branching.
The third, what I refer to as the runt is quite different.
It is a dark purple/black tint to the leaves and has 50% dark striping.
Today is their one month of growth, the runt is half the size of the other two.
I'm hopeful it might contain that Black Magic gene ;>}
There is also suppose to be a black gene strain from Nepal
I'm growing out some now, was hopeful to find that trait among those seeds as well.

I smoked the Black Majic in 88. It was smuggled out of Jam Rock by my Uncle. To this day there is no herb that even comes close and I've tried plenty. It doesn't look like much, but I'll tell you guys this. I laughed so hard I fell outta my chair and when I looked up at the chair I saw myself fall "5 MORE TIMES."

I saw this thread an had to comment. Back in the late 70's my sisters boyfriend had some weed called Black African. It was black and kind of sticky. I was only 15 at the time and was not a real big pot smoker. He told us to take the weed to a place where no one was around. We hiked up a mountain a smoked some. To this day it was by far the stoniest weed I have ever smoked. The thing is is that it was like smoking weed laced with mushrooms or something. The stone was so intense that the 3 of us kind of freaked out. We smoked the rest of it on 3 different occasions and it was just out of this world. You could not function at all.
Now, I was told that this weed was not considered all that great so what they did (who knows who) was lace it with opium which gave it it's sticky appearence and it's out of this world stone. Was it truely BA? I have no idea, but my sisters BF at the time used to smuggle all sorts of dif. weed/coke from all over the world and to this day had the best weed collection ever.
That's my small story.
Peace

the dark pigmented weeds are magical, but that could very well be the cause of peoples memories of the "sticky dark" weeds... opiating them i mean, i have of course smoked a wide variety of purples, and i think the less beefy ones might hold more unique qualities

AH can you elaborate on "sun dry the heads"? Are all of the fans and branches still in tact at this point?

I like the idea to experiment many different ways, but any tips would be of great use. Thank you.

fascinating.. So when it comes down to it, none of the more experienced breeders / genetic collectors and genetic scholars can't quite nail down anything 100% fact about this strain? To me it sounds like a composite strain, or a compendium of different strains that had this dark, fermented quality to it that came to be known as Black Magic African over the past 20-30 years. Though it would be VERY interesting if someone was able to place on specific strain from the Congo or Ethiopia, however I think with all of the excellent weed scholars on here one of us would have and should have been able to nail down a story and cite some good references on it. Needless to say it's definitely got that magical nature in itself to be this hard to pin down!

yes i have got it. it was given to me by african guy from tunizia. it's huge seeds and i had never heard of it b4. but it is a beast of a plant, heavy with doubled up resin and black tric's. it is pure indica looking and i only had 3 seeds so i planted 1 and crossed it with purplecheddar and another cross of blk.af.mgkXdurganchitral. i intend on using this gem as my main stay of genetics. if you can find it get it for sure!! reply about "black african magic"

reply about "black african magic"

I have read a few articles on strains on the internet and many of them talked about some herb called black african magic that was rare even in the 70s and it appered to have black buds...have any of you heard of this before?
hello guys i have had the privilage of obtaining these magic beans, i got them thru a guy living in zanziba but he said thay came from ivory coast originaly. i just finished growing and crossing it, i only got gifted 5 beans, so i put 3 in and kept 2. it grew like indica, looks indica dom as unusual pheno but nice, the huge point is the thc and cbd!!! off the charts, and i been cannabis cup judge and winner for highest thc in 98. and this is easy 2 times stronger. i grew it in australian summer indoor so it got to 50'c or 122'f on a few days so the color was greyish/blue. in cold i can imagine it black as. i crossed it with gdpxexodus and another cross with durganchitral. plus i selfed one of them so i got plenty of beans of this beauty so dont stress it's still here and not extinct. i wish i grew more as it was my goto bud and i have 8 strains to choose from this season to smoke but i emptyed the B.A.M first due to its goodness. now i'm onto the herijuanaXshivaXjack. coffee pheno. now thats 2nd best :(:dance013: oh well it's taken me 20 years to get my hands on these so i'm wrapped. cheers Andy indica

check my fb page andy indica. pic's there. never happened for you.
p.s i'm looking for a professional grower to grow some and confirm my thoughts. i'm with matt riot on this on, it looks to me as a compisite of other dark strains, like someone else said "i thought most african strains are sativa" well i thought that too and when this strain that was given under no fanfair or boasts of how good it is, i got black sugar at same time and was more interested in that one and had no real expectations for this unknown strain. well i was converted when i smoked it. BOOM it leaves others in dust and i been a stay high for 20 years. i dont sell seeds or dope so no reason for me to inflate the claims. i do swap beans and i will get some pro-growers to fire it up as i used medium price soil and never took a ph test. if someone went whole hog on it i would be happy. black african magic or not who knows? all i know is this one labled b.a.m from africa is super strong and my favorite by long shot. i got 2 originals left from 5 and 100+crossed with gdpxexodus pollen. :woohoo:

Give thanks.

Ive been trying to become an ICmag donor, dont know how.
I can acquire angolian red seeds by the bucket over night.

the black is rare (EDIT: This is a ghost story to me), and yes id say its trippy and psychedelic but i preffer my Cape Cheese hybrids anyway, so not really into that or where to find some. However, malawi is the spot, or zimbabwe.

Give thanks. Peace and Tokes as South africa plans to introduce medical ganja end 2015.

Guidance and Praise
