I have been to Maastricht more times than you can count.
Taking nug back on the Maas trains is not a pleasant experience, plus prices are disgusting.

I'll be hitting up Haarlem, Utrecht, and Rotterdam on this trip too.

I can't say I understand your aggression hazy. I also can't say it's very becoming of a moderator.

Maastricht is a 5 euro round trip train and 28 minutes from where I live. I visit every Wednesday. It adds up. I'm sorry if you thought I was trying demean your counting skills with my comment. I meant to use it as an expression and I'm sure you count superbly.

I am asking for advice in Amsterdam. I have not been there more times than you can count, unless you can't count to 3. I never asked about any sort of advice in Maastricht.

I'm aware of Amsterdam's price, I am going for the city as well as the bud. I am trying to enjoy the city and counter its enormous price by purchasing good deals. Which is what this thread is about.

Sorry if I offended you and I hope that clears your questions up.

I have really no idea what you are getting at, or how it pertains to this thread. The title is "Big sacks in the Dam", if we could keep it on track that'd be really great.

I had the link from when I googled "coffeeshop" (it was the first hit), but thank you anyway. It is certainly helpful and will probably aid other readers.

They have enough on there plate at the moment over there,So its best notto put them in a situation that could get them shut down by asking if the sell more .They are on a very very fine line itwouldbe a shame to lose all the shops .Just becouse a few folks could not follow the rules .Thats what i think anyway .Ie when folks from other countrys go thre and smoke outin public that does not help matters to .

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Almost half of Rotterdam's coffee shops will be forced to stop selling cannabis because they are too close to secondary schools, Dutch news agency ANP reported on Thursday.

The move comes as part of a tougher Dutch line on the drug, which is legally banned in the country but tolerated for use in small amounts if it is bought in coffee shops.

The coffee shops are a major attraction to the many young tourists that visit the Netherlands every year, but they are becoming increasingly regulated.

Some are now no longer allowed to serve alcohol, and if one shuts down it cannot be replaced by another.

Due to the growing use of soft drugs among school pupils and problems caused by their sale and consumption, Rotterdam has decided to ban 27 shops within a 200 metre radius of secondary schools from selling cannabis, starting in 2009, ANP said.

The new laws will not cover primary schools, as primary school children hardly ever consume cannabis, it said.

There are about 700 coffee shops in the Netherlands, which, according to industry estimates, bring in more than 1 billion euros (678 million pounds) a year. And also this bit of news to Marijuana Shops in Maastricht to Demand Fingerprints from Customers

And also this bit of news ,

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands: Coffee shops licensed to sell marijuana in the southern Dutch city of Maastricht will begin fingerprinting customers and scanning their IDs this summer, a spokesman for the shops said Wednesday.

The measures are aimed at ensuring the rules of the Netherlands famed tolerance policy are not violated, which could lead to shops being closed, said Marc Josemans, chairman of the Union of Maastricht's Coffee Shops.

"This is not something that we are doing willingly, but with pain in our hearts," Josemans told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Wednesday. He said shops in Rotterdam and several Dutch border cities were considering following suit.

"We're very afraid we're going to lose customers over this, and to be honest we're even a little ashamed we're doing it, but the City of Maastricht has such harsh punishments that we don't feel we have any choice," he said.

Marijuana is technically illegal in the Netherlands, but cities may license shops to sell no more than 5 grams (less than a quarter ounce) per customer per day. The shops may not sell to anyone under 18, nor permit drugs other than marijuana or hashish on the premises.

Since Maastricht Mayor Gerd Leers took office in 2002, police have strictly enforced the rules, and shops found in violation are automatically closed for a minimum of three months for a single infraction, six months for a second offense, and permanently for a third.

As a result, 11 of Maastricht's 26 licensed shops have been closed, leaving just 15 open.

Josemans, who is also owner of the "Easy Going" coffee shop, said the electronic system would be tested at his store Aug. 1 and used by all licensed stores by September.

Fingerprints would be coupled with a digital photograph and a scan of customers' ID cards — removing all personal information except date of birth — and then stored on a computer system at the shop.

When a customer wants to buy weed, he will have to prove that he or she is of age, and has not already purchased the 5-gram limit that day at the same store.

"We're not going to give this information to anybody else, and we're not linked to each other or the Internet," Josemans said.

He said the shops already had video surveillance cameras and cooperated with police in criminal investigations, but the stored fingerprints would be too low in quality for use by police.

Because of Maastricht's location near the border with Belgium and Germany and not far from France, the city receives 4.5 million "drugs tourists" per year who come just to buy weed and then drive home again.

City spokesman Math Wijnands said the drug trade brought a host of problems with it, most notably petty criminals who seek to sell marijuana or other drugs in the neighborhood of the licensed coffee shops.

"They know that they have a target group here, but they go about their business in an aggressive manner," Wijnands said. "That causes problems in the city center."

The city is currently negotiating to move more than half of the remaining shops to the outskirts of town — angering neighboring countries like Belgium who object to what amount to marijuana drive-through stores on their doorsteps.

Wijnands confirmed that the city was aware of the plan by the shops to store customer data, and approved.

"If they're going to take ID checks into their own hands and obey the rules as much as possible, then that's only to be applauded," he said.

Josemans said the system had been vetted with the Netherlands' digital privacy watchdog, known by its Dutch acronym CBP, and did not violate any laws. A CBP spokeswoman could not immediately confirm that.

Thanks, in large part due to the present group of thieves that populate the White(bread) House. The changes continue to occur. It is only a matter of time, before politix in NL begin suggesting no foreign peeps can purchase 420 in Holland, that would be first, I would venture.

Then the Dutch could see restrictions on themselves.

I am amazed on how tough they are on growers in NL. Of course, if people are tapping in to the power grid, no one makes $ on that, so they are gonna enforce that. It is not a Dutch trait to ignore potential sources of income. Or thievery of same.

It is fascinating to watch the interplay between these increasingly restrictive policies, and the awareness of all the Euros that the tourist brings in, to come and enjoy the atmosphere, and puff away. I hope we do not lose this bastion of wonder (which we appreciate now, more than ever) that we call Amsterdam - to the Right-wingers.

Thank you to all the crusaders in AMS, you know who you are. Especially, Arjan, and others involved, a great deal for their efforts to keep the discussions going, and the governmental unilateral decisions to a minimum.

Maybe they'll start asking for passports, and refuse to sell to us Americans, to keep Bush happy.
Then maybe only sell to EU members, then exclude the Brits 'cause they won't join up, then only to the Dutch.
However, I seem to recall a thread long ago that said most of the customers are not foreigners. Anybody remember this ? Was it just B.S. ?

Fingerprints to buy weed? What the hell is the world coming to when you can't even buy weed in peace.

I'll tell ya...there's no way in hell I will buy herbs from any shop that follows the fingerprint rule. If it means not spending another euro in the shops of amsterdam...then so be it. They will be losing a lot of money if they impliment this privacy-infringing rule.

 Sorry government of Holland. Better think twice about this dumb rule.....or no more € from my pockets..say good bye

Maybe after the crooks are dispensed with.....

Maybe after the crooks are dispensed with.....

ouch to all prospects. Same here. After countless trips to AMS, and the Netherlands, in general..... I will not return. I will go to Spain, or simply stay in NorCal for my 420 moments.

Although AMS is a lovely City/Village, incredible, on many levels, without the freedom to puff away it loses its' lustre for me. I would say, "OK, I have seen the Rijkmuseum enough times for one lifetime, etc."

In addition, IM(not so)HO, although the Dutch women are very friendly, and enjoy communicating, they are a bit chilly "otherwise."

And yet, France and Germany tolerate, reluctantly, the coffeeshops near their borders.... Amazing.

Maybe if our US of F'n A, and a courageous Congress and House (in my dreams) makes medical 420 legal, or just decriminalizes the whole potato, then some other places will not feel so compelled to change to more restrictive policies. I could see this happening in a couple of years, after the Bum is thrown out. Seriously. Things will probably change here, at that point.

The Dutch seem to have little problem with too many peeps smoking pot excessively. It is us Amerikans who are more prone to excess, (and especially when in Amsterdam, lol) partly because of all the Puritans who "lead us," and proclaim FUN as a four letter word.. (Sheesh, da bastards cannot even count, because they are too drunk.)

So, naturally, we rebel, smoke our pot pure, in big "gars," make translucent bubblehasj, and sometimes go too far.. Just like anyone would do, in the Wild West, if heavy pressure was applied to do any one thing.

The coffeeshop is fun. You have to give them your fingerprint to go by the port to sit down.
