BH's Mossy JEM Garden

Do the males show before the ladies like other AF types? That is what i usualy count on, so i can get the ladies into a bigger pot A.S.A.P.

As far as growth i am happy with them, i thought they were moving pretty fast. I think i will re-pot them next week even if not sexed. If the foliage is going that fast the roots have got to be going at least the same. So i feel they will need room to stretch their legs soon.

BH in my experience with jems the males ussually show first. I tend to keep the males in the beer cups to delay they're flowers from opening. That way you get pollen at the right time when the females are ready.

Well no photo update today, maybe tomorrow. Feeling very under the weather yesterday/today, gives me a headache to be in the rooms for any amount of time.

That's not the only bout of bad news. I am almost certain i have 5 males, those are just the ones i am decided on. It looks as though i have ZERO... let me repeat ZERO females... Maybe one but it's looking like a late blooming dude. So i have one maybe female and one runt i don't care what it is.

For the record i have never had a pack turn out all male. Nothing was done differently from previous grows where i got good ratios. Looks like it was a good thing i bought a 3rd pack of these things. I might have to go through all 30 just to get some ladies...

Once i get feeling better i'll get some pics up and so you guys can see my disapointment.

That is some sad news Billhill. The breeder would probably help ya out...but that is so sad. Better luck with the next batch my friend.

That's what i am hoping. Dunno what to say i don't want to make it seem like i'm chucking mossy under the bus here, or the JEMs. Bad luck? I have been known to say "If i didn't have bad luck i wouldn't have luck at all". Once i know for sure they are males. I'll get the next pack wet, and we'll try this again. lol

Just goes to show you, one pack it rarely enough! At least i did get one good male. Out growing the rest by far. The only other test will be color, if he shows good color he's the kepper. It'd be nice if i got a red male... pipe dreams? All is not lost, i need pollen from the JEMs anyway, at least i have a wide selection of males :tumbleweed:

How many days old are they? Or rather, how old in that last set of pictures? I'm trying to figure out if mine are on a good growing pace or not. I think mine are a half a week younger than yours, somewhere in there.

Around 10 -13 days old or so. They were only a few days above dirt when i took my first photos, then the last ones i posted were 7 days after the first.

I'll get some photos tomorrow. I am on the 5th node on the biggest one. smaller ones are working on the 3rd.

I am also going to revise my prediction of all males, i think i got one female. Going to be very branchy lady how-ever.

Bad luck mate, hopefully the bad luck on ratio will make its self up by giving you ONE super Lady or you might end up getting only females in the next pack...
Will be watching this one, always nice to look at the JEMS.
Keep it up. Karma sent your way, hope you get better soon mate.

Are Mossy jems available anywhere? I have seen a few grows of em and they seem like a great nug...

BH did you use pre-ferted soil for them? Mossy said once that using soil with fertilizer already in it , like miracle grow, resulted in more males.

Actually no, just plain promix. nothing added. I don't use pre ferted soils, as it's hard to flush it properly. I did however give them a watering with bubbled kelp in it. Maybe the growth hormone messed with them? The nute measurements for the kelp are 1-1-4 so not much N there. I've done this on past ones and had good ratios. My veg cab is also a little warmer these days.

Ither way, the next ones will be going into the promix with no kelp.. and i'm putting the exhaust fans back on in the veg cab.

Don't know what to say about it.. it is what it is.

Maybe i just discovered the magic male juice or some thing lol.

That sucks bro! I hope you get that 1 female, always wait until the plants really show sex to be 100% sure before killing them. I sex at day21-25 with the JEMS, they wont release pollen that early even if the males look like they have bigger balls just watch them.

As for the crappy ratio, out of the 1000s of seeds of the JEMS it is possible but Rare that you could get all males in a single 10 pack, sorry but the odds are agaist you. Just the same as you might get a pack that is mostly females. I just wish we could tell the sex of seeds but that isnt happening. So, I hope you get something in the 3rd pack and enjoy the JEMS.

Yeah i have heard of it happening to other guys, just never thought it would be me. I've always tried not to feed seedlings much, as i've always grown with the wives tale that more N when they are young will yeild more males.

Even the males will hang around for a few more weeks, i need pollen and i would like to take the ones with the most color. So in that regard it's good.. I hate making seeds from a small number of plants. Parents are key after-all.

I'll get the next pack wet this comming week. Since the plan was to have some beans for the summer, i need to get a move on.

Well, i thought since i am in a good enough state to spend some time in there. I'd get some photos up. Since i have a flock of males i'll start with them:comfort:. I didn't take a pic of the runt, i am betting it's female, wouldn't happen any other way. I'll post some pics of it next time.

We'll start with my attempt at a close-up. You can kinda make out the balls there. This guy had dangling cherries before the others even gave an incling that they were males. I don't think he'll get the keep.

This one is getting the keep so far, he's got 2 nodes more than everyone. Lots of vigor, only thing left is the color test.

Male:

Finally i will finish with what i belive is my only female from this pack:jump:. It might be a late blooming male but i am pretty confident this one is going to show me some hairs some day soon. So it is going into a 2gal grow bag as soon as i get time.

Until next time.

thanks for the update! bummer about all the males, I hope your little female produces for you. Are you going to pollenate her or not?

Yeah she will get hit with some pollen. I'd hate to have some nice smoke not be preserved. If i can't clone it i might as well have some seeds to work with. I was saying in another forum, that i don't think i've grown an auto that did get pollinated in some form.

I usually reserve the lower popcorns for the breeding projects. That way you still get that nice cola on top to sample. Which ends up beeing fairly seed free.

One day i will do a run of un-seeded ones. lol

I thought it would be a good time to do a photo update. The sun in out, got to work on the yard today. Had me thinking about the JEMs actually. I haven't had time, or space to get the next pack of JEMs going yet. I think once i cull the males i will get the next going.

No color to be found as of yet. This isn't the first time i've gone looking for purple, so all the green doesn't faze me. :dueling:

The one i thought was female, turned out to be. So at least i get some smoke from the grow. This grow was about the males, i found one that wreeks to high heaven. It's a sweet sour kind of smell, the closest smell i can relate to it is what OGkush tastes like on the exhale. That lemony sweet kind of skunk.. At-first he wasn't my first choice but he will get seperated now. He might be what i am looking for in my auto oger cross.

Enough with the jabber.
TO THE PICS :groupwave:

This is the lone female from this pack. She's been in the grow bag for a few days. She got a late transplant. Looking lush however, going to be bushy i think. No color.. Not worried, if she's green, mossy said the greens are potent phenos' anyway.

On to the next:
These are the males, large difference in the pheno's. I think i am going to keep all of them and do an open pollenation. The stinky guy gets his own keep and own bud to pollentate.

Random closeup, no color :(

The stinky stud... Whoo if you could smell this little stud.. Bliss.

That's all for now.
