I am thinking about growing in my barely heated greenhouse; if there were a strain that could tolerate it what would it be? I haveheard Alaskan Thunderfuck and White Russian.
Alaska thunderfuck is kind of extinct and white russian as far as I know is an indoor strain. White russian is just a name it's not actually made from russian genetics, I think it's like white widow x ak47.
I don't think anything will survive frost if it's that cold.
I have some Erdpurt hybrids that have survived several light frosts already. The real test is going to be the next several nights as the temp drops to -4C / 25F.
There are a few strains that can handle cold better than others. But it is always better to try to find one that will be done or very close to done before it gets to cold.
BOG's Bogglegum does well in cold weather. Lots of growers here in the Pacific Northwest have had excellent results outdoors. I just picked up several packs of seeds from BOG and I'll be running his bogglegum outdoors here in Oregon.
Northern Lights #5 is also historically a good outdoor cold weather strain.
Ace Pakistani Chitral Kush survived many frost's for me before. I had a purple one I left until october 30th several years ago. Most Canadian breeds are meant to be done flowering before the rain on the islands.
Ace's PCK and Erdpurt should both do the trick as mentioned before.
Generally speaking you can't say a strain is "indoor" or "outdoor".
White Russian could work but is not a strain particularly known to work outdoors or in cold climates or anything.
You are looking (generally speaking) for strains that finish fast/early.
So a bunch of strains with "early" in their name could also be suitable.
Once you narrowed it down to early finishing strains (which would include many an Indica, Afghani types etc.) you could further narrow it down to strains that are known to resist colder climates.
Like Erdpurt for example (but there are many others).
It gets interesting when you are looking for Sativa variants. There are way fewer of those that finish early AND resist cold climate.
Mr. Nice has an Early Haze. It was bred by Nevil to finish in the Dutch climate before frost sets in and according to himself and others does just that.
I got it myself along with some Erdpurt seeds for the day legalization allows me to grow outdoors. Want to use these 2 strains as building blocks towards acclimating my strains to the local climate and venture outdoors with them.
I'll be growing through winter months here in a poorly sealed greenhouse. I'll add a couple of heaters to avoid freezing temps but it does sometimes get below 32F here and very rarely down to the mid to high 20's F. I've lived here five years and don't recall it ever getting below 25F.
Rsc himalayans usually take pretty long to flower, maybe search for a more wide leaf option.
Or some kind of danish Nepalese(Tanska) which are faster than true nepalese.
Check seed heaven, I'm sure there are plenty of varieties which handle well the cold.
As has been mentioned here, it is the finish times of the strains you should be looking at.
Most cannabis plants can handle some cool weather near harvest or maybe early in spring, but no strains grow entirely in the cold!!!
The concern for outdoor growers is to finish before the rains set in and buds get ruined with mould.
A strain name linked to some geographic place does NOT mean the plant was derived there nor does it mean it will thrive in that place's type of climate....White Russian was not created in Russia and it was created for indoor growing (but yes it can be grown outdoors)
You are looking for genetics that will flower early at higher lattitudes ( more than 12 hours of light) not due to cool weather. Genetics that will finish in Scandinavia, are perfect for Northern growers, not for growers in cool climates.
I live on the west coast and it is a helluva lot colder in most of the US, in winter than it is on Canada's west coast. (Chicago, Boston, New York, Detroit, etc are all brutally cold in winter). So, even if I put out plants and tried to grow them in winter, they would go into flower immediately and the buds would get ruined by the rain!
Hasha from richhard Williams? No personal experience but the description sounds like it might fit the need
From HE~pDep*{
We got the Hasha in trade for beans from an old New Brunswick guy. It’s a semi auto flower that come in dead done by the end of August. It’s a short plant that buds starting in July that fills in nice with dank skunky nugs - a rare thing for an auto. Very stealthy due to its height and being so early you will Be all cured, dried and on holiday before any worries of choppers or rippers. R.W.
Thanks for all the responses. Richard Williams Hasha sounds like. Good choice for me next may - august, then i can run another quick strain for a couple months.
Erdpurt and it's crosses
Kc brains 33 and 36
Biddy early
Early skunk
Early pearl
Serious 6
Texada timewarp
And from what I heardoes exceptionaly well is Delahaze
Stuporsonic , very powerful! Older strain that was put out by Sagarmatha was special bred for short cold season. Only a few hold this strain today, it's a shame. We need to bring it back. Later, Stash
