Best general layout for mother’s/veg space + flower space in 4ft x 4ft

Hello all,

Have searched the forums but didn’t really see anything relevant so posting here. I grow outside, but have someone needing help on an indoor space that is 4’w x 4’l x 8’h.

What is the best general layout one should use to maintain one space for veg and one for flower? I know it is a tight space to work with so maybe forget plant numbers for now and we can apply the right grow style (recommending soil though for this newbie) and numbers to the space after build out (?).

Should the room be split into left and right sides? Could then keep all the height for stretchy sats, and use a skinny roll out cart with shelves for maintaining veg space on one side about 1ft wide?

Thanks in advance!

How is the veg side going to be light proofed in such a small space? I don't know how this could work, honestly. Is this a 4x4 tent? Is it a closet? I mean the first thing that comes to mind for me is to have a small, light proofed veg cabinet in the corner of the room. You could also split the space vertically. Gives less vertical room for the flowering space, but the sativas you mentioned could be trained with LST or scrog.

But I think that's a tight space to be dividing up. Keep in mind that each side needs to have adequate ventilation and light proofing and stuff. You could go with all autos, I suppose, and not have to worry about dividing the space in the first place?

Splitting vertically is the only thing I can picture as an efficient use of the space. Maybe build the space with separate doors for each, light tight internally. You should be able to share ventilation and a single carbon filter for the two spaces.

Thanks for the replies guys. Hush - you’re right - light proofing and ventilation will need to be well thought out. No easy task that’s for sure. I successfully split an even smaller space indoors a few years back. Would have been nice to do more but you deal with what ya have I guess.

Think I’m on the same wavelength with both of u guys here. Split it vertically with separate doors. Keep ~3’w x 4’ deep on flower side. On the skinny side - partition into an upper and lower chamber. One chamber for scrubbing and one for bonsais and clones? For such an altogether small space, temperature and ventilation will need to be well thought out.

Cheers guys!

I think splitting it vertically also. My shelves for cloning are 1 foot tall. Moms need a little more headroom but with some training you could be using less then 2 ft. 6ft of height for a 4x4 flower space ain't bad.

Just keep everything in trays so they can be pulled out to access. Standard 1020 trays are cheap.

Hi F2F, did you make it over to the Micro growers section in the forums too? Lots of good info on managing small partitions/spaces in there.

Like everyone else said, splitting it into vertical sections is your best bet.

I would just make a table like shelf or whatnot, and seal it off so good that its basically like 2 smaller cubes stacked. Then ventilate each one separately, or at least pull through the veg chamber first. Not sure if you have to run your ducting on the inside or the outside of said space?..

As for keeping mothers and clones too, you can actually do all that right in the smaller veg space, all at the same time. If you learn to air layer your cuttings from the mother plant, and time everything perfectly, you can be vegging, cloning, pruning, training, and everything up until flower all at once. No extra propagation center or equipment needed. Might sound like a daunting task but its actually the most efficient and simple way, with the best success rate. Everything under one light no domes or anything.

You could perpetually stagger the small flower space so your harvesting half of it every month, and filling it back in as you do. You could even have your outdoor babies planned out too and ready to start the veg/mom chamber fresh again every year by chopping her up to her doom and starting new.

Hey, thank you DTS. I have never noticed or visited the micro section. I’ll check it out!

Had one other thought on this. Your friend has a 4'x4'x8' space he's willing to use. Has he considered looking for a second, 2'x4'x4' space? Maybe he has a second smaller nook that he hadn't considered? Even a place to stick a small tent? Be nice to maintain the larger space.

Hi RB - yeah that is the easiest solution. However, this will be a legal setup and I think it all may need to be in one space, under lock and key ??? I need to investigate further on this point. Funny how little I know about the legal side given my guerilla tendencies

A quick anecdote...had to laugh yesterday when I grabbed a shovel and headed to the backyard to turn a compost pile. my dog got super excited jumping all around and it finally dawned on me she thought the shovel meant we were taking a slightly longer hike to the patch. Lol.

Cheers,

You couldn’t fit something like this 1.5’x2.5’x3’ somewhere under a table? Inside of a cabinet? Hide it? Somewhere?

I wouldn’t recommend trying to fuck with those tents unless you are pretty skilled with a thread and a needle, which isn’t something that comes without a bit of practice.

I second the micro grow option for mum/veg. You can produce an amazing amount of healthy plants in tiny spaces. :)

The main reason I fully recommend separate spaces is due to infection. It's best to keep your mum/veg separate from your flowering area, and check them separately when you (and your clothes) are clean.

I've been reading and helping folks for over a decade online. One of the most common disasters I've seen are complete wipe-outs of perpetual growing areas. If growing is simply a hobby, and you have no dependence on the harvest, perpetual can create a lot of cannabis in a small space.

I depend on my cannabis, and I'm unable to go out and use the polluted cannabis in the dispensaries. If you're like me, you'd do well to have separate areas. :)
