Best Durban Poison?

Dutch Dragon by Paradise has Durban in its genes. It yields really well and has a pleasant high and taste. It's an easy plant to grow and inexpensive as well. Definitely worth considering if you're looking for a good Durban variety that's been worked well.

i also grew out the "seeds direct " freebies of south african durban poison. and a freind swears to this day it was the best hes ever smoked !!!! but its all good !!!!!

I will ask around and see if I can get for you. Not much DP going around the last few years, its very hard to come by.

I have a few Swazi beans in the car right now in the console, if there are enough I'll add them to the pack once I've found the DP.

But please , I can't promise anything right now other than I'll keep an eye out.

that durban poison I posted a pic of is a cut from dutch passion (standard, i believe) and was bought in '02 or '03.

its ok. overall, id rate it a 7. (above average)

ive run it four different times over the years. its not something i keep around, but, I do get a taste for it every few years or so.

for me, its just one of those classic strains, like white widow, or northern lights, that everyone should run at least once.

Oreo F1.

Afropips' DP crossed with an unknown 'cali-citrus-ey' strain from Germany. One of the most unusual cuts I've seen in my 43 years of growing. Much more potent than the straight DP, but with the same trippy, stimulating high. The up effect is so strong it can actually counter a couch locking indica. Oreo even sobers up folks on alcohol! People love this cut, it stands out from common genetics like a sore thumb.

Mr. Greengenes, have you ever grown out Afropips DP straight? If so, care to give me any insight into what Ill have in the future? It'll be at least 3 months before I can do a grow report on them. Its hard to find a grow report for DP, so Ill give us all something we might enjoy.

Yeah, I grew the 'straight' afropips DP too. I originally got 5 DP seeds from a S.African friend, who got them from africanseeds.com. Only 2 grew, and both were female, which is why we had to outcross. The original female DP's were; Amazingly beautiful plants to look at, possibly the most ornamental cannabis I've ever seen. Decent plant and bud structure, though decidedly 'sativa-ish'. Long flowering period. Not much visible resin. Somewhat weak high from heavyweights' points of view, but very nice taste and smell when cured a while. The high is noticeably 'up', but that got much more pronounced in the F1 cross, Oreo.

Thanks for the detailed response. It'll be great to have that when Im finally trying them out for myself.

Hopefully all ten will sprout and I can open pollinate clones of them.

Im sure some people wouldn't mind if I sent seeds in as freebies to the Bay.

Hopefully Ill get something stronger than the two you got. At the very least Ill get to run f2's if I dont find a great keeper in the first round.

i smoked some south african durban poison in maastricht like 10 years ago.
it was fucking killer, ripped me and my buddie apart. ppl here talk about it and say its a mild high but i remember it as really potent psychedelic weed. maybe its because i was young and used to crappy weed and hash but ill never forget this stuff.

Vital - I'm not 100% sure, but almost positive that those DP x Skunk #1 were stock from High Quality Seeds....the same as the Durban Poison Amazing Special, just one of their hybrids.
Funny reading vital mentioning these as I just found an old pack when I was cleaning the other day. Mine are labeled:

Freebie
South African Durban Poison x Skunk #1
/Sam the Skunkman

I seem to remember the only one I grew was a male and I never bothered trying to grow any more. I might see if I can get some to pop after Vital's post. Thank you.:tiphat:

I didn't mean to indicate that the DP was below acceptable potency, just that some people with high tolerance, etc. The 'straight' DP was actually quite potent, I thought, especially when fully cured. It was other people (you know, those folks who buy 1gram of the 'fire' at a time) who complained. After all these years, I find that I'm much more open minded and easy to please than many folks when it comes to smoking. I'd probably make a crappy CC judge. I thrive on uniqueness and variation, and though I didn't get much variation with my two DP seedlings, the unique-ness they threw into the cross was amazing.

The Oreo cut is a horse of a different color. I've never seen anything like it in all my years of growing. Like SLH or Island Sweet Skunk the Oreo cut has a strong floral fragrance above the growing bud. The smell is very unsettling though. It's not a completely nice, flowery sweet smell. It has notes of extreme unrefined quality, sort of wild or veld, if you will. Most people love it right away, but a certain percentage don't ever warm up to it. I'm dying to hear other people's experiences growing and smoking it. It's still in a relatively small circle in SoCal right now, but we're trying to spread it far and wide.

Nirvana's Durban Poison in '01-03' had several phenos. A more rare pheno which was stout and short with fat leaves and a long, tall, spindly pheno. The short and fat pheno was the one to keep. It had that anise smell and flavor, was sticky as hell, great yielder, mold resistant, and a fast flowerer. Would love to have that one again.

Durban was something I was always thinking of trying, I hope I can try that cut someday. I don't much like anise or licorice either but sounds good overall.

Nirvana DP I growed at spring was rubbish. 13 weeks, had to cut it down, could have gone 15+ I think. Very low potency. I have high tolerance, so it could work better with people with low tolerance.

I agree with you on those late flowering phenos from Nirvana. There is a a RARE phenotype in the Nirvana packs that is done at 8-9 weeks and is really tastey and potent. It has only shown up from two seeds from two separate packs out of seven packs. Hope that makes sense.

Just scored some Durban from my dispensery and it is amazing! Tastes of anise and is covered in trichs dont puff this at night! Probly in my top 3 sativas of all time.

Is anyone here interested in a Afropips DP grow journal along with some of Sams Haze x Skunk? There doesn't seem to be much interest in these strains at my other site, so I thought id see if there is any here.
