Also, with a little searching around here, you might find a pre-determined amount of bleach or pool shock that you should add per gallon, ostensibly bypassing the need for a meter, at least in the short run.

I actually have a temperature compensation high accuracy ph meter from ebay (etekcity or something like that) that i store via the lid 4.0 solution. I think it's the .05 ph high accuracy one. This thing works awesome, only drifts .01-.02 per month and was $20 after shipping.I never got around to buying a chlorine meter before I went the gold zone route, nor have I ever used a chlorine strip, but yes, those strips should work perfectly fine, providing that they have an indicator for your 1ppm or whatever it is . Might not be as convenient as a digital meter, but I'll trust strips before I trust a consumer grade digital meter any day of the week. There might be chlorine strips that are designed to indicate lower levels, perhaps at pet smart or somethin'.
