BAL 600w lamp, can I remote the ballast?

Hello All ICMAGer's,
Need a little advice about my lamp as I would like to fit a cooltube to get my temps down. Problem is I have a BAL digital lamp where the ballast has the bulb fixing fitted onto the end of the ballast. Is there any way I can remote this ballast? I am not much on electricity, its like witchcraft to me! Is there any reason why this can't (or shouldn't be) done?! Any help and advice appreciated, thanks in advance!! Really don't want to have to buy a new one as cooltubes are pretty cheap but ballast's aren't. Also, that reflector is a load of dog poo, the one in a cooltube is not great but at least I could take it out and put a euro reflector above the tube!!

Hmmm, you must have something like this:

There's absolutely no reason why you can't mod it. My first light was a modified street lamp with an all in one ballast/socket arrangement that I tore apart and made remote. I found the instructions on the old OG.com.

On the other hand, based on your description of electricity being "like witchcraft" to you, I'd be nervous about making this your first big project--not because it's difficult, but because the consequences of a fuck up are great!

Good luck.

Ya like BR said...no problem. Usually there's a wiring diagram glued to the iron part of the transformer. Make sure there is because you'll need that to figure out where the wires go. My concern was that the socket might be different...but a new socket would be only a few bucks.

If you can find a tutorial about making your own lights...that should give you a rundown on how to do this...

Thanks alot for your replies, it's exactly like that picture! I think theres a wiring diagram on it, I just needed to know if it's ok to add in 3 metres of cable between the ballast and the lamp. Its sounds as though it's fine to do that, but I will be looking for a guide on the net before I do anything!!
