Baking miracle grow from home depot before use??

He already did it Oldguy. You need to read the whole post, he cooked it on the bbq outside. Best place to store is freezer or use right away. For sure everything is dead in the soil.

MG will add as little as they need to the soil and it is NPK.

Elements will be fine for now but he will need to get some Hydrostore soil before transplant.

Peace

Looking back I see it now Dragon... Showing my age I fear. Hell, been looking for my shoes for days now (laughing).

And no matter what anyone says, MG is just too borg-like for me brother. Shades of Bhopal and everything. I just don't like chemicals is all, nor see any advantage to chemo-cabal brands like MG.

Now that I've sufficiently pooped on Elements nice original post, I'll shut up and go back to looking for me shoes.

If you think you have to bake your soil then you should not be using it.

I agree with this 100%....

PS.. I don't think that a bag of soil being frozen in a solid block is going to kill bug eggs.
Bug eggs stay alive in the frozen soil outdoors
in nature and then hatch when the Spring weather thaws them..
Then again, I'm no eggspert....

Your half right Bud, after a mild winter you'll have more pests outdoors than after a cold winter.

Ha Ha Eggspert. LMAO that's a good play on words

HE bought the soil in error but didn't have the cash to buy the good stuff, so I told him to cook it on the BBQ for a while till it is steaming real good to cook off the bugs.

Peace

I have never had any probs with mg soil in a pinch. if I start seeds in it I screen it and make a cup full of the shake. and plant my seed into that. works every time for me. just found a new store for organics in my area so I am done with mg again.

Yeah, it worked out really well. Only problem was that my grill was a little dirty (ok, maybe a lot) and left a little smell to the dirt. It still worked, no bugs came out. It had a very "peculiar" smell to it, but it worked.
I only used it for a couple seeds and ending up getting some good bagged coco from the hydro shop and have since had no trouble with my seedlings.

Best advice I can give:
If you do bake the dirt, make sure you clean out your grill. If not you'll be smelling cheeseburgers in your grow room and that will make you feel weird. Like really weird and down right uncomfortable. I ended up tossing it, but I feel like its a solid idea in principal. Just executed poorly by my part.

Peace

Miracle Grow & Fox Farms both make a seed starter mix. They are the same thing: sphagnum peat moss with mycorrhizal fungi. No dirt. Very light ferts. Perfect for starting seedling. These are small bags that are found inside Home Depot, or @ the hydro store. I haven't found anything that starts seeds/seedlings better. No preparation necessary.
Only other thing I am curious about is why you would think that coco is somehow complicated or risky. It doesn't come much easier than Canna bagged coco. Just pour into pots and it's ready to go. Just use either coco specific nutes, or good old GH 3 part or for the ultimate in simplicity, Maxibloom all the way through, as in the K.I.S.S. thread. Also, coco works great in Hempy buckets, which don't come any easier or more foolproof. Basically impossible to screw up. Don't be intimidated by coco. It is simple and clean, and you won't want to go back to soil mixes after using it.

Got to watch your PH with MG. Last bag I used the PH was way high. The label said the soil contained rice hulls. Read somewhere rice hulls in soil can raise PH....

Yeah, I got it all down now. I just lost a couple seeds when I started with coco. Everythings fine now, kinda surprised this thread popped back up after a month. Much has changed. Doing fine now
