Yo,

just saw about this Flame Defender thing and thought man thats the shit since I'm like nonstop worried bout a fire breakout.

But i wonder, just hanging it in the growroom?
I mean tha plants wont start burning, either the soil neither the pots.
Ok the lamp might does but man, the chances seem to be too low.

So how is it, in the usual growroom setup, which stuff could seriously start burning?
Expect of overpluggin heat fires, since it must be idioticy flaming down ya home cause of that.

Fire needs three things, Heat, fuel and oxygen. Remove one and the fire is out. It doesn't take much fire or toxic smoke to do permanent damage to life and property. If you think your electrical situation is not in order ask around here for help.

Stay safe.

Ye your right, but since oxygen, some heat and fuel, like cables and so on are always around in the grow room its hard.

I wonder if ya could get some backup with 2 of these 2kg flame defenders.
Placing one in the Growroom itself, aiming at the ballast and lamp, while its spreads and spams the whole room anyway.

And the 2nd over all the electricity stuff.
like this

Wouldnt that give some quite good backup against fire?
It'd be a pain in the ass building a new room out metal or other fireproof stuff.
So I'm planning to switch my "plane" which covers my room from outside light and builds most of the walls, against one that is fireproof and a of these 2kg flame defenders.

first, dont ever run a ballast off an extension cord, that will help a lot right there...i just picked up the 12kg model, but i also have 2 properly rated fire extinguishers mounted near the electrical panel, and another near the grow room itself,no such thing as too much in the safety department...

got that, dont have any on it. but the short cable pissing me off already since the ballast is outside, on top of the room.
So i planned adding some PVC pipe into the room, screwing on the wall so it wont move and putting the ballast on that.
This way it'd be covered by one of the flame defenders and i got more spare cable inside.

glad to hear that these defenders are around in use.

I have thought about pointing those at my ballasts. But it probably would make more sense not to have anything flammable near them.

I had a lamp catch on fire inside of a air cooled hood. It was pretty self contained as the hood itself is not very flammable. I suspect the same is true of the ballasts.

For fireproofing you could screw hardibacker or another type of cement board over the walls or ceiling nearby.

You could also consider having an over temperature switch turn off any fans in case of fire.

Thx for the info,

I do have a few months before the next room update so I'll make my thinkings into it, might leaving the results here.
But i guess its just the usual set up, buildiung out of nonflamable stuff and using two flame defenders.
On aiming inside the room, inclusive ballasts. The second aiming at the electronics, cables and laptop.
Will just be an ugly view, putting all the cables at the same spot. Im used to hide them.

Just make sure all the cables are secure and cannot be tripped on or the like. snagging wires pulls connections loose. loose connections cause sparks. Sparks start fires on flammable material.

plants burn so does everything else, doesn't matter if the are green. plastic will burn and even worse it puts off hazardous smoke.
you must live in the city with that kind of thinking, and never watch a forest fire where it's green all the time, and fires burn through green fresh forests all the time.
extreme heat will cause your plants to burst into flames very fast, they are perfect fuel for a small fire. same with everything you mention. didn't you have fire safety in elementary school?
You can use extension cords for ballasts, you just need to get the heavy duty type that is rated for correct electrical usage, don't use cheap ass thin cords. ask any electrician.
if you run to many watts through you electrical system you can over heat the wire and cause them to spontaneously start on fire.
You just don't want to use extreme length of cord between the ballast and bulb. due to loss of power for the bulbs down the stream.

Yup, just meant that the plants wont start a fire, sure they'll burn in a heavy flame.
Dont got extention cords, neither planning on gettin any but thx for tip.
