You saw the root of the entire problem at the end. The old man's comment "it's gonna diminish our property values!" That's the bottom line.

The property value argument is so old. People need to get some new shit to complain about.
The property value argument is the same bullshit that kept non-white people out of neighborhoods for over a century and is still keeping them out.
White people like to feel good about themselves by saying it's about property values, not intolerance. "OH! I love black people but unfortunately, one moving in next door will lower my property value so we need to keep them OUT of this neighborhood."
And then you have "white flight".
And this shit lives to this day. A few years back when my mother worked freelance for a real estate company showing homes, the real estate manager made sure to drill her on people who called and sounded black/had a black name. She was to tell them there were no properties available for rent. This still goes on to this day. And this was in Brooklyn, NY by the way. Not like Whitesville, Oklahoma.

If the guy would have gotten the permits in the first place he wouldn't have these problems. People should know they can't build giant structures in their yard without proper zoning permits. Remember the line "most neighbors, while sympathetic..." so it's not like they don't care.
They interviewed a couple of haggard old neighbors that don't like change, and made it a news story. I'm sure those few don't represent the majority, and most neighbors don't care.

Whether it be property values, zoning, permits, or whatever, they are just excuses to hide ignorance.
Instead of educating themselves about this lady's plight and showing a little compassion, and maybe helping a fellow human out, it's just much easier to have the problem removed.
I bet all the complainers are God fearing, never miss church on Sunday, bible thumpers too.

Really? Geez, and here I live in a racially mixed working class neighborhood with property values still soaring (albeit out of control....)
