We were cleaning bongs & pipes with corks, acetone & rock salt or plain salt in the double wall bowls. It's a messy & stinky PITA, but it worked.
I got part of this idea from Eighths-n-Aces who uses purple degreaser to soak his implements. I like Zep citrus cleaner, so I tried 1 part cleaner to 2-3 part water, soak the bits & pieces overnight. I put the pot in the sink, pull out the basket, pour what's in the bong back into the pot & rinse everything under running water from the tap. Works great, & the solution remains potent after many uses. When I figure there's a fair amount of sediment in the bottom, I strain the solution thru a coffee filter into another container, pour it back into the asparagus pot. Easy-Peasy.
For reasons I don't understand, the citrus cleaner works much better with water than without.
