Are expensive seeds better?

R

This thread title says it all. Why are some seeds so expensive and does that mean they are a lot better?

Unfortunately the price doesnt always seem to reflect the quality here,
some are more expensive because some want more... imo...

Prices don't mean anything about the quality. Just simple supply and demand and hype.

I would stay away from breeders who have bad reviews.. I wouldn't go buy price.. but then again.. if u want good genetics.. and u don't wana break the bank.. CSG, DNA, Canna venture, Sincity, Mr Nice, Karma, ACE.. Tom Hill.. I mean. I just wouldn't buy anything over 120 a pack PERIOD. and im talking 10 seeds.. and ive learned to stay away from fem seed. just because ur better off getting a few males and making seed as backup.

I know there are threads about this but any personal recommends about good quality seed producers and how to make sure I'm getting what I'm paying for?

Look at the breeders who users are happy with time and time again.

Based on recomendations from people on this site, I tried people i'd never heard of before, including Karma, Med-Man, Mandala, and CBG, and I was happy every time.

Look for the breeders who people absolutely love, BOG comes to mind because of his staunch standing behind every seed he sells, replacing duds like no one's business.

That being said, there are high, midland, and low price breeders who offer high quality seeds, your only difficulty is choosing from among all these awesome professionals!

Some are high in demand and the price reflects it. A HTCC winner is certain to spike demand.

Similarly, if you are looking at a given seed bank's line-up with 20 or 30 varieties of seed at $40-60 and a few at $120? Those are usually reflective of demand.

Some prices are reflective of a seed breeder's philosophy irrespective of demand. For example, while I think highly of Soma's strains, I'm just not paying that price for his seeds.

That said, there are a lot of solid commercial genetics, with reliably feminized seeds and with low prices too. Barney's Farm (iffy strain stability mind you) Greenhouse Seed Co and DNA Genetics are among the cheaper seeds but those guys make it up on volume. Their lower prices are not reflective of poor quality.

DNA's Reserve Privada line's generally higher prices reflects the higher relative fixed costs and lower volume of the smaller breeders in that boutique line of seeds.

Best purchase for me in the last 3 years was from 40Amps here. $40 bucks for 15 seeds and straight fire.

I will spend more for any Karma Genetics gear though as I know quality will be there.

I bought China Syndrome from Infi here for 20 bucks and shit was fire.

No, money has nothing to do with it!

I value your opinion tremendously- you seem to have a very realistic take on it all. With that in mind, I'll try some of the breeders you've recommended.

We def agree wrt Mandala. Recently grew out their Rishi Kush & Satori. Both are as they describe, with the Rishi Kush actually coming out better than expected but still easy to regulate & to share w/o turning light tokers into zombies. The Satori is ridiculously potent, even for my heavy stoner acquaintances who are more accustomed to the high of commercial Kush & Indica leaning hybrid varieties.

Well worth it for $40 & $57 per pack respectively. BTB looks to be a real bargain at the seedbay price, for sure.

I'm also sure that fashion & notoriety play a big part in seed prices. After hearing about & reading about well publicized varieties, people are often eager to pay silly prices for the latest & greatest, just like anything else. They'll convince themselves that it was worth it, too, whether it really is or not.

Having said that, I confess to a very irrational desire to grow Soma's Lavender. I'll probably break down & buy the seeds at the ridiculous asking price, too, someday soon, maybe.

Yeh, it's irrational, but so is love, and I haven't given up on that, either.

This is completely dependent on what you like IMO. You get what you pay for. Show me people pulling sick Chem, og, and diesel plants from cheap seeds and I'm all ears, I don't have clones. Sadly what I like is normally priced upwards from $80 to $100+. That being said I also buy from the server fund, and from breeders who price their gear in the $35-$50 range like classic, and eskob@r. Research, and go after what you like and don't let the new hot thing sway your decision in what you pick up.

Did they come with a name? Was there a lot of variation or were they all pretty consistent?

I agree wholeheartedly that thats how seed should be spread :)

Well, it might be true that the price per seed has little to do with the potential quality. However, the money/time spent on stabilizing a Hybrid IBL often has everything to do with the strain's consistency when reduced to seed form.

Growing styles also has a lot to say about perceived seed value as well. If you are the kind of guy who buys a pack of ten seeds, grows em all at once, takes systematic cuts in veg to capture the potential Mother -- and then flowers the first ten to identify the keeper? Then you are going to get a LOT more for your money when buying cheap(er) regular seeds from the bay.

Contrast the value in use of those same pack of ten regular seeds to somebody who grows a few plants here and there from seed, doesn't cut, rarely clones, and relies instead upon consistency of their commercial feminized seed from seed to harvest as one-offs in order to make their grows work. For that grower, a pack of 10 regular seeds is almost worthless to their growing style.

yes all had names Angola red, Colombian blacks, Congolese, hazes, Kandahar, thai{many} those are just a few of the freebies i have grown many more then i can't recall atm. some seeds are crap and i did have some bad experiences with seeds{one big name brand} where just garbage. And again i have had girls from my own seed and friends seed that has been gifted, that was top shelf happy daze, open pollination/diversity is key. supply and command that's all what are you willing to pay.....free sounds good peace

age old debate. Some think certain established breeders have built a reputation and some pay for that and the stability and more certainty they think they are getting that by paying more. Who's to say if they are right but whatever makes you happy. There are fine breeders who have fine products for less, some would say there are more phenos and more unpredictability with some of them, but some would argue they don't allow their ego to get out of check and believe selling at a fair price benefits us all. They tend to be newer at it and some argue the older more established breeders deserve to command a premium for all the hard work and research building a strain over the years. Both sides have valid points, you have to decide what works for you. Several packs for the price of one higher priced one, or some strain you seek that you consider special. Hope that helps!

No one has mentioned Nirvana as a source of seeds at a fair price. I have grown their AK48, Bubblelicious, both were great weed. Did Blue Mystic and Snow White, not so great. All were femmed seeds. Their Aurora Indica ,and papaya are on my to grow list. Gypsy's 4 packs are the deal of the century for Nirvana seeds.
