Are CoolTubes...................

i would say yes, unless your reflector/hood can be aircoolable(has glass and vents).

cooltube is just a cheap way to cool.

np man.

yeah buying a cooltube is expensive, but making one is cheap.

so if your light can easily be aircoolable(by adding some glass and hooking up a fan) that mite be cheaper.

but i mean a round tube is like 15 bucks, then u just needa few bucks in fittings and some time.

good luck!

I paid $59.00 for my 19" cool tubes, came with the moguel base and side reflectors, got them at mdhydro
^^^^

same. . . their packing can be a little "so-so" by my standards, but ive never had to get anything replaced. My only complaint is when i bought ym vortex, they had part of the vortex sticker still on the box =/. . .

apparently "hidhut" is supposed to start offering cooltubes and batwing reflectors in december, at least thats what it said on their site. So if u can hold out, im almost positive they would be cheapest there, so far they have been more than reasonable pricing their digi ballasts and such. . .

but either way, mdhydro does have them cheapest as of now!

I LOVE my daystar ac ;) well worth the money @ 130$.
Even though it looks small, the light footprint is still great and even.

I believe the cooltube is the most efficient way to cool an hid. Cooltubes allow air to pass throughout with basically no dead spots. Air is completely free flowing, where as in air cooled reflectors there are high and low air flow areas. Air cooled reflectors are much more efficient at evenly disbursing light, but if you are more interested in cooling your bulb than an even light foot-print, I think the cooltube is the way to go. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

No, you pretty much nailed it. Only thing I can add is that there are multiple variations / manufacturers of the "Cool Tubes", many with external, adjustable bat-wing style reflectors which gives you control over the light footprint. If you were up to the task, you could even buy an external El Cheapo batwing reflector and attach it to the CoolTube to get this effect. The internal reflector versions are great small footprints, such as cab grows, but have been known to cause hot spots from what I've read.

Edit: There are also larger diameter versions, and also ones made of polycarbonate material that supposedly has less lumen loss than ones made of glass.

do the cheap 59 buck ones come with the reflector?

i was gonna get the Inside Sun 400watt hps/mh combo. It comes with reflector and i was gonna build a cool tube.

They come with an internally mounted one, yes. Or you can remove it for vertical mounted lighting.

IMO the DIY cooltube just isn't worth it, particularly due to its small diameter, having to shop around for parts, short length, and performance. Add it all up and the savings, if any, aren't much. Also factor in the fact that a "real" cooltube can easily be sold if you decide to upgrade to something else or move on from this hobby... (and this coming from a poor / cheap guy!)

Edit: picture from their site
