Apollo 11 and other Brothers Grimm 2.0 releases

Howdy, 'allo, cheers. :)

Just going to document some Apollo 11 plants over the next few seasons from time to time.
Apollo 11, a product of Genius x Cinderella99 was big and available at the turn of the century into the first decade. Bros.Grimm stopped producing for a while until the legal climate became more conducive to growing, breeding, etc.,

I'm not an expert, but I have been an aficionado of their work for a while. Original Bros. grimm stuff is unique, is surely NOT a grail because that hype is just silly. But they put out some solid genetics in terms of ease of growth, fantastic bag appeal, and definitely some memorable terps and highs.

Apollo 11 was the thing that hooked me. So no matter what I've grown and smoked over the past 17 years, she's been either a staple of, or later a pursuit for having her in my garden.

I was excited for the re-releases and have a pack or more of every release of strain. Have grown out Killer Queen (G13/HP x C99), and she's solid in every way, a real fruity hammer to the head.

Apollo has been more variant than I originally remember. Growth has been in two runs of at least 4 different females, all over the place in terms of phenotypes. From tall, lanky and longer bud growth to small, compact runts. Then there is a selection that definitely has the C99-dominant structure of smell and taste.
Hidden among them are the genius-leaning, in terms of zig-zagging and a lemon-dominant taste in the smoke.

Caveat: I didn't run enough of the original and the new ones to be any sort of purveyor of expertise. I'm merely documenting and trying to engage discussion about this particular strain and its lineage, as well as any experience others might have in growing their new release strains, of which they have quite a few of the named classics -

Rosetta Stone (different makeup than the original)
Killer Queen
Apollo Haze, Apollo 13, etc., etc.,

But I have run multiple packs of the old stock as well as multiple packs of the new stock. I can tell that in some of the specimens there is definitely more than a hint of the original taste (lemony, or pineapple funky) and high (really lucid, impactful, and energetic) that I've come to actually depend on.

Words. So many words. I'll just throw up some pictures and try and keep some record of what I've seen and what I hope to see in the coming years.

:tiphat:

Various bud sets on Apollo 11 winter 2020 run

Various bud sets on Apollo 11 winter 2020 run

About 21 days in. You can see the familiar cinderella-leaning bud setting and in some the zig-zag of the Genius.

Funky skunk and hearty plants with good support, unlike Genius which is floppy.

Now, Soul says the following in his blog/interview with Alchimia:

A - You developed C-99 from Princess and Shiva Skunk...what about the new version? Is it true that you used Princess and C-99 as parents?

MrSoul - The Shiva Skunk was only used as the male in the P50 generation. The final “formula” to create C99 is Princess x C94 – which is why the “new version” isn’t a new version it is EXACTLY the SAME as in 1999.
Source: https://www.alchimiaweb.com/blogen/origins-brothers-grimm-seeds-interview-mrsoul/

Notice he says it's exactly the same. I suppose that means in terms of genetic lineage. Because the results now don't look EXACTLY the SAME, and there seems to be quite a bit more variation. Genius is the one constant in this genetic equation. The C99 he's using (or more than 1 male?) produces plants that those that are more familiar with Apollo11 and its phenotypical expressions suggest don't really look like the "old" batch. But that's because it's not the same father used in the old releases; I assume that one is lost to time? I thought I heard about pollen stored, I'll have to look further for that.

Maybe Apollo11 had a lot more variation than what I'd seen in my limited grows. But I found it interesting that Soul said that, and it's stuck with me since reading it.

I will be trying to do a C99 run in the nearish future in order to examine similarities and differences to past grows, as well as selecting good males for future projects of my own.
Genius x C99, Romulan x C99 (Space queen) and so on.

what's up JJJ, good to see you still kicking around these parts!

I agree with your observations, I never found any Single Cola Dominant plants in the A11's I have ran. They were always branchy-bendy plants with multiple smaller budsites, exactly like your 2007 shots.
-most of my experience comes from stock other than Bros Grim and from running the Genius cut.
I always loved the A11 and C99 - they just had a great quality to the high, the clear and upbeat stone was perfect for daytime smoke!

I've still got some Reservoir A11G4 and some C99 F4 beans from back then that I need to pop someday, also I've got a line on getting the Genius cut back in the house again so If that happens maybe I can find a suitable Male and do a bit of pollen chucking

i'm just gonna pull up a chair and get comfy :D

Good to see you, EG. :D

This run seems to have less of a single dominant cola, which is more in line with what we think when we run this strain. Although there's one of the ladies that could be an MVP in the WNBA it seems. :D Tall indeed, and far, far slower bud development. I'll try to get better pictures, but I think that's what the "Genius-dominant" pics are from Post #2.
The others seem to be coming due in the next 2 weeks, give or take, whereas she's going to go longer it looks.
Variety though, and got that finger-rubbing stank going on that we love.

They sure do have that daytime beat, that's for sure. Always able to get lost in thought but snap back immediately if needed to focus.
I found too, over some time, that this works well for me in the mornings where Adderal used to. That alone is something, for me, worth chasing and keeping.

I think if I find a couple good females and males in the 36 or so seeds I have left they'd be interesting crosses to some other stuff down the pipe. CBD-heavy apollo? Yes, please!

Who knows where it'll go.

I know someone who's working on cubing genius, so that's something to look forward to down the line too. This line has always been interesting to me, and will probably hold my imagination for a long time to come.

Cheers, bud!

Cheers, St. Phatty. It's your day to celebrate! :D
*lights up in your honor*

Here's a shot of the 4 ladies prior to flowering at 2 different phases of vegetation. You can see the differences in all of them right off the bat.
(Never mind the feeding, I'm never going to fully dial in a plant  )

Thank you for sharing your A11. How does it smoke and taste compared to your previous A11? Was this the regs or the A11 xx?

Your's don't look like they relate to the new99. In fact they look pretty damn good to me.

When I met Mr Soul in CO shortly after he made a short return here around 2016 one of the things he told me out of the blue was that Bohdi as well as Mosca and obviously Subcool had all offered him various genetic materials to use.

With regard to Bohdi, he worked the A11 f4 "genius pheno" line and at one point had access to Ray Davies cut of c99, although that was a one off release. Also, Ray has reached out to Bodhi to try and get his c99 back but he said he didn't have access to it. That points to Soul obtaining A11 material from Bohdi.

Hopefully he used Bohdi's gear to work the A11 releases. The plant from C99 IMHO were an outcross to an unrelated plant/plants. Everything about new99 is different. Growth, Finishing time, Smells, Tastes and the high is mostly indica. Additionally, Genius is still available and held be at least one member here. I think the A11 release may be a better representation of original BG gear, but have yet to grow any out. I do have a few A11 xx but until seeing your grow had no intention of running them.

Please let us know how the A11 smokes!

Hey LostTribe. :)

This was the regular release, not fems.
Your's don't look like they relate to the new99. In fact they look pretty damn good to me.
They still grow well, and they certainly yield well. They're hearty and they grow strong. I can't complain.

When I met Mr Soul in CO shortly after he made a short return here around 2016 one of the things he told me out of the blue was that Bohdi as well as Mosca and obviously Subcool had all offered him various genetic materials to use.
That's interesting. I spoke with him online a while back, but I only asked about the C99 used in the Apollo11 release, but didn't get much farther than that.
I have a half a pack left of the Crystal Blue, which I believe used Bodhi's Super Snow Lotus matched to a P75 male. https://www.choice-cannabis-seeds.com/brothers-grimm-seeds-crystal-blue/prod_6772.html
I didn't end up flowering any of the half-pack that I ran (was just re-acclimating to growing after a long stint off), but even with my brown thumb it vegged nicely.
And subcool makes sense. The Green Avenger strain.

I don't know what else I have of theirs that might be crosses, but I have picked up virtually all of the new offerings, including the Grimmdog.
With regard to Bohdi, he worked the A11 f4 "genius pheno" line and at one point had access to Ray Davies cut of c99, although that was a one off release.
That one sounds good.

I think Apollo11 is definitely worth growing out. I can't say for sure if you, or anyone, would like it or not like it. Purists will poo-poo. It is what it is.
But I've enjoyed each run - I've not yet kept any female, I just grow by seed for now. Because too, I was worried that the brothers grimm reappearance might be short lived. Mr Soul, among other things, seems impatient. Maybe i'm just an asshole. :dance013: But I digress.
The point, I learned, is that contacting Soul is easy and he ships direct to you for a simple Venmo transaction. So there's plenty of it to go around. I haven't been disappointed with any of the stuff I've done from the new round. A11 has been all over the place in terms of growth, but there's a definite throwback nostalgia, and familial connection. In short (not my strong suit): Tasty good times.

His killer Queen is excellent. Fruity, muted skunky, very solid and disorientingly mellow stone. Lots of head, lots of body...don't drive on it, settle in.
There's a definite vibe to his stuff that he puts out. Like Petite and perky ladies with some complexity. But bottom line, it all grows out well. There aren't issues, so far, with hermies, weak growth, anything like that. User friendly.
And it all makes really good hash! Apollo is a great candidate because all is similar and when it's all mixed together you just get some really solid, clear-headed, sativa high. Nothing crazy, but that mellow intensity of thought and perspective with a clear energy kick. Yum.

That's a downright tasty C99. And that's the look we remember!

Thanks for the chat and input, I appreciate it. I'll post up bud pics when I get them done in a week or so.

Some buds from a 4- Apollo 11 run just finished up. 4 different looking expressions from tall and lanky to a runt with a ton of branching. Generally the buds look the same, some with more of a Genius-leaning expression (picture #5 is a genius bud freshly harvested for reference; the rest are Apollo 11 females grown from current stock.)

They continue to impress in terms of growth, finished product both in bag appeal as well as the classic Apollo terpenes that range from the C99 to the Genius.
I still haven't kept a mother, but have taken some notes on the time spent while smoking it. I won't bore you now with the rambling, grinning details, except to say it's a very familiar and utterly pleasant experience smoking.
Continues to be my go-to in terms of choice smoking during daytimes and often late at night while listening to another Grateful Dead concert tape.

Solid stuff. Will continue to throw in information from time to time when I run it again - and I always will. :)

Happy growing, hope you're all staying safe and healthy, and most of all KIND. Cheers!

How can Mr. Soul say the new C99 is "exactly the same" as the old one? Old C99 was NOT Princess x P94 - it was Princess x P88, which IS P94.

By his own description of how he made it, new C99 is really Princess x P94 which is the same as saying P97.

Yeah, I know. I will forever take issue with that silliness - and what was caused by it - using a male that wasn't even at the same back-cross generation as the original one (despite the fact that he said he had the seeds) which could only cause it to not be "exactly the same" on what must have been some gamble that the male he was so proud of would make the same or even better than the original. Well, he lost that gamble and now he's stuck repeating a lie.

Someone has one Apollo 11 xx germinating but lets hope that they are from Bodhi's A11 f4 genius line. The proprietor told me that all sorts of people like Bodhi, Subcool and Mosca were offering genetics when he returned.

I am not going to hold my breath.
