I lived in Southern Oregon late 70' to early late 90's. In the late 70's we used to get some pot called simply Afghan Kush. It tasted like hash mostly and could really put the stone on you. During this same time Northern Light 5 was a popular strain in Southern Oregon - about equal to the Afghan Kush - but with a much sharper taste almost like Alcapulco Gold. It had many colors to it when it finished up late in the season.(reds, yellows, lavander, dark blackish purple)
It wasnt long after that something called purple kush started showing up. However, those of us that started seeing in in the Rough Valley, in Oregon, were getting it from a place called Takilma Oregon. Takilma,Or and Humboldt, Ca had similar seasons and similar pot for years. There were allot of connections between these two towns back in the 70's.
The word then was purple kush was a cross between Northern Lights 5 and Afghan Kush. There was two dominate phenos in this group of seeds one was a hashy tasting sativa leaning plant and the dark purple musty grape tasting one. The later got done about 2 weeks earlier out doors.
I think Urkle is a decendant of this pot.
Remember something too that in the emerald triangle there are allot of purple pots that had different names because people exchanged clones and seeds and then simply renamed a strain to take credit for it. Mendo Purp, Purple Urkle, Purple Erkle, Lavander etc...are most likely the same plant or a little different pheno from a group of seeds from back then.
If a plant had it name changed 10 times just in the Emerage triangle image how many names it would be called going worldwide.
If you think you have an urkle plant, or you do, check for random double serrate fan leaves. It is not a dominate trait but you should find some. This came from the Northern Lights 5 ( from Southern Oregon circa 76-82) trait where all the fan leaves were double serrated.
Unfortunately growing pot and naming it is an EGOFEST at times. The lineage and sources are not very accurate necessarily these days either. The purple pot went for allot more money then the regular colored green stuff so an additional motive exist to name anything purple Purple Kush way back then - even if it wasnt. Now imagine getting something that wasnt and breeding it and confusing the lineage further.
Now fast forward thirty years from back then and everyone is naming pot with no lineage tied to the origin. Everyone is an expert, and everyones pot is better then yours You just need to read a few comments in the thread above to figure that out....
Purple Kush = Northern Light 5 x Afghan Kush, or is a a pheno of this cross anyway. ( Circa 1976 - 82) Southern Oregon/Northern Cali
