Anyone ever add an a/c vent to closet from central a/c??

Can anyone help me with this? What I need to do is add two a/c vents to a 8x8x8 closet. I have central a/c currently so I was hoping I could just add the new duct work to the current system. Anyone know if I am on the right track or what the diffuclty level to something like this would be?? The ceiling of the area is very accessable by the attic.

You might find a article or two on diynet.com also Lowes and Home Depot have good do it yourself articles. I assume your ac duct work runs in the attic. You will have to cut the appropriate holes in the ceiling for the vents, then you need the boots " these are the things that go directly above the holes you cut in the attic " there will be a little framing involved at this part to hold the boot in place" , next you are gonna have to tie it into the existing ductwork so you will need some flex duct, enough to reach the existing duct work, now is where it gets beyond my knowledge. I know that there are pieces that you can buy that allow you to y off your existing duct to add another run. This part requires accurate measurements as you gonna have to cut your existing duct to insert the y " or whatever they call it ".

This is as far as my knowledge of it goes. Could be quite a bit of work for someone who has never done it. Hope this helps a little.

Bigmo said it all basically.

A sweeping Y, which just branch's off to the new line at almost 70 degree's I think, it is to devert air flow into the new duct yet still supply air in original line.

Now most home system's are rated for the home, not many have overated unit's, so increasing the duct work will, or can, cut down on air flow into other room's.

I have mine under the floor, mobile home, and tapped into the duct work under my closet to cool it off some, and yes it does work, but it is hard to control with an open vent and free flowing air, I would say at best it helped me stabalize temp.s.

Now you can get a solenoid controlled flange so that when temps get to hot it open's and allow's cool air into closet, this will work as long as A/C unit is on when flange open's to allow cool air in.

At best I only used a vacum cleaner's hose to route cool air into my box in the closet.

Now keeping the closet cold as the house did keep the box cooler, but I got the best resutls when I put the vacum hose in the box. Box is 2' x 3' x 5' tall.

You will take 2x4's about 16" long,minus 1.5", so about 14.5", place them between the rafter's over the opening, this is the frame work Bigmo mentioned, attach the metal flange, then insulated duct, 8" at least, then screw in the vent cover and all should be good.

Take some paper and draw it out, exsisting duct routeing, the look, you might get away with extending off the end of a duct line, put in the Y and connect back to original vent outlet and run duct to new location.

Thanks alot to both of you. I have my 8x8x8 closet split into two rooms so thats why I need two going to this closet.Sounds like I need some 8inch insulated duct work, and a "sweeping Y" connection,metal flange and vent covers.Plus the wood for the frame.
Thanks again this is the info I needed. Im gonna try to find some tutorials on the subject also so I may be able to see some pics of what some of this may look like.

Yes, at your home building store's they should have a nice lay out of the step's with a few pic's. Another fine source is used book store's, look for the older "handyman" magazine or book's as they are loaded with helpful info on small do it yourself project's lke this, sealing a window, putting in a exhaust fan in a bathroom.

It is not that hard, if you can figure out how to grow, well you will do just fine with this I am sure.

I said 8" duct size, it is rated to move 400 cfm, test are done only in a 3ft straight section, and that is what my place has comming off the larger main duct under the home.

Thanks RealHigh. I appreciete the info. I am gonna check out some of the books and mags you reccomended.After Christmas Im gonna hit homeDepot and buy all the supplies. Doesnt seem like a very big job.So I should be able to handle it. I would love to be able to have two 8"ducts coming off the main duct one going to the flower area and the other to the veg/clone/mom area. This is the only thing stopping me from starting to flower.Once I have a/c going into the closet i will be able to close the door and start my Flowering. The 8x8 coset is currently seperated but when the closet door is shut the temps can rise in a hurry w/ a 1000w light on a mover.Cant wait to have a/c in there. By the time I flower my plants thery are gonna be huge. :)

Maybe it will be a better idea to start now, find the area, draw were the vent goe's, no real lose, so cut it out now. It is simple, think of a picture frame, we will just build your's out of 2x4's, it is for support and in some situation's not needed.

flipmastermike, For all of your ductwork you can use 4" round duct. Tap the main with a y-section, and add another y-section to bracnh for your two spaces. Use a bathroom fan intake for the duct, about a 4x6 should work and all should be fine. You will also need a pair of tin snips to cut the existing ductwork and to trim your pieces. I would use some aluminum tape to seal your joints. Keep it cheap and simple. Good luck!

Depending on your need of air supply will depend on the size duct to use.

Just for example: I run a 8" duct to supply passive fresh air to a 2x3x5' tall box with a 400 watt bulb in it, another 8" duct is ran with a Y in it for air to the hood and top area of the grow chamber, all is exhausted using either a 465cfm dayton blower, or I run a small exhaust fan, 36cfm rating, is ran basically constantly, and all work's well, until summer heat, than the A/C that was brought in to the room come's into play.

the other factor in the duct work, what size you run to the room will also restrict air flow and keep other vent's in the home flowing near normal,or if to large, larger than other duct work, well all will flow more into the larger duct taking away from air flow through out the home, smaller room less air is needed, the 4" might just be the size to use, at least I think I would start out with that size, as I said I use a 2" vacum cleaner house, but my area is small, and that is all I needed to make thing's work.

You can download a duct size calculator to determine duct sizing recqurements. Normal hvacr/r installion for residential construction consists of 4" diameter flex duct in most rooms. The distance from the fan and the fan cfm's are the critical elements. Most bathroom fans are 4" or 6" ductwork. Good luck.
