ive got to build some shields for my lights soon or i will soon be in deep poop!!!

here is what i am talking about:

basically, i figure some pyrex (if available!) or other heat-resistant glass would be cheaper than two $100 cooltubes, and it would work nicely with my blower setup as you can see from the pics. i wouldnt have to run any ducting, etc., either.

Does anyone know where i could possibly order some custom-cut pyrex or other heat resistant glass?

I don't know where to get Pyrex but I don't think pyrex would be necessary. You could probably put an ordinary piece of glass in there and it will work fine. I use a cool tube made from a cheap candle holder. I'm almost positive it's not tempered and it works fine.

Just don't let there be a large temperature differential between the outside and inside of the glass.

Hmmm i was thinking that also, but if i could source the pyrex relatively easy id like to do it that way.. or just some hardened/tempered glass. i looked in the yellow pages here and there are a few glass shops i can try calling just to see what is possible. Thanks!! :)

i came up with another idea...

here the shields would be closer to the lamp, which would probably increase the cooling power by increasing the velocity of the air flowing over the bulb/s... could be adjusted tighter even possibly... also this gives a bit more headroom (albeit slight). the idea there is as you can see ducting put into a hole in the glass, either passively or with a muffin-fan pusher/helper to move the air towards the stanley blower's intake. I think a 4" with the output right near the "main" blower intake would create the necessary vacuum there and pull air over the bulbs without the aid of two additional fans.... anyways, thanks again! :)

use the regular glass...tempered glass reduces lumens more than regular
and trust me the reg will be fine

well that would certainly make it easier to source... might give it a try ;) i reckon as long as my airflow is good, and the bulbs arent too close, aka dont heat up the glass too fast, it could work... thanks!!

Sorry to sidetrack the thread but what program is that that you used to design your cabinet? That looks really cool

EXCELLENT!!! thanks a million! i wonder if i can specify i want a 4" hole put in one end of each sheet. As I understand it, cutting pyrex is near impossible with normal tools??

and YES! I love google SketchUP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! works awesomely. I did the drawings *FIRST* before even building the cab design, and it TOTALLY helped me figure things out.. :)

hmmmmm/.... the biggest size is only 12x12, and its $50 per sheet...... the 3.75" I.D. "oil cups" would work, also spendy but cheaper than "cool tubes" on ebay. I might try some fairly thick normal glass... with my airflow good it shouldnt heat the glass too fast and crack/break it. i dont think even HPS security lights (now that i think of it) have pyrex "lenses".... well maybe they do for security reasons... hmmmmm...... ;)

^^^ Tempered glass at the most my friend. Same goes for glass lens AC hoods. My Sun System hood had a piece of tempered glass with it.... Easy to get from a window installer/glass shop

very good advice... will price against the normal glass and see what they recommend at the glass shop :)

and LOL harrynugz ;)

Probably going to suggest the same because that's what AC hoods use, although they might have something in stock for you. Cutting round hole is another story...... You may be better off getting 2 cooltubes from say mdhydro, @ $60 ea online price it's a good deal, I drove there and had to pay $100 still a good buy tho....

we had an old "media tower" that had tempered glass doors... prolly tossed by now. I can probably cut the holes myself with a dremel and grinding wheel, if i have to. I will see what the glass shops say... I could just as easily make a panel at the very end of the glass itself, out of MDF or whatever, and put the holes there :)

like this:

I love Google SketchUP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

edit: we will see if the glass shop/s would cut a hole for me cheeeeaaap!!! otherwise i could use this method... it would block a little light but prolly not too much... :)

any ideas for a "manifold" that i could actually mount to the bottom of the blower to draw the air over the lights DIRECTLY?? Perhaps just a box there that the hoses could mount up to.. but there isnt much room between the blower and the inside floor of the "backpack"... hmmmmm...... ;)

actually, duh, i could bend the flexi-tubing/ducting up and basically have them right at the opening there, and the blower would naturally draw much of the air through the ducting.. only issue is i dont want to create any "whoosh" sounds.. i am FANATICAL about soundstealth!!! :)

a pic of that: (obviously im not good at freehand drawing.. need to stick to straight lines!)

doable... ;) first im going to work on the carbon filter idea (more urgent/complex fabrication work needed):

imnotcrazy got it right. I was suprized not to see it sooner. My hydroshop sells the glass for aircooled hoods. Mine was $20bucks. It fits my sunleaves large horizontal and is like 20"x22" i believe. Its inches from my 1k... Task specific and I can vouge for it. Nice work on the Sketchup btw, now im intrested. Good luck, love to see it when you complete it. Keep it easy ~caddy
