Ahh jazz and good smoke go hand and hand .Alot of jazz musicians loved to smoke herb.Jazz can be such a journey into abstract thought like(wayne Shorter or Pharoh Sanders) shit can be played and put together with what sounds like no ryhthm or structure to the instruments, blaring and sounds at no given interval ,yet can be the exact oposite direction tight put together or with an added groove like Herbie Hancock (manchild) or Dolald Byrd.

When musicians make music they are making their creation, but when i think of jazz ,i picture the jazz musician painting a picture ,because jazz music can be on such different ends of the musical spectrum ,its almost like an artist painting .Abstract ,modern ,Surreal ect .The unorganized way abstract shit is not my cup of tea .

My favorite jazz types are

Groove Jazz- Miles Davis is pretty abstract for my taste but he did a few groove albums ,my favorite groove of his is called "Big Fun"
Bitches Brew is mostly heavy abstract with a little groove
Other Greats in this category
Clifford Coulter - Do it now Its like a 1960's heavy funk jazz groove at the barbaque gettin down
Jimmy Mcgriff- Soul Sugar This is late 60's cool cats bop funky breaks and shit
Grant Green-"Green is Beautiful"This guy is the all time greatest fucking jamming jazz guitarist

Cosmic Awareness Jazz- This was around 1968
-1973 .Sorta Like jazz mysticism type stuff everybody was taking drugs and being hip .a few greats of this were

Alice Coltrane- Journey to Sachacanda
Horace Silver - Did 3 different albums called The united states of mind
Sun Ra
Gabor Szabo- Jazz Raga Sitar psychedelic scene american style ,the best i heard ,this guys talent floors me

Rock Jazz
Dennis Coffey - instant coffey ahh hell anything by him, is amazing
Dennis Coffey and the detroit guitar wheels- evolution

Well sorry for ranting on ,i listen to this stuff all day and all nite whilst on icmag.I wanna hear some other peoples favorite jazz artists.Great thread i love talking about jazz :dueling:

Don't forget Melvin Sparks- "Funky Skull" this is by far the most underground strangest funk ,noise machine strange jazz you will ever hear

My group and I used to blaze before, on break, and after EVERY gig. A lil' imrov never came so smooth as after a nice bowl...

Sal - I definately agree, when I'm jammin with my buddies most of the songs we've written have come after a nice smoke session it seems to unblock the creative minds.

Bubble Puppy - I pretty much listen to every jazz there is, some stuff I dont even know the name of, just know I like it, pretty much everything from the greats to the unknowns to a little self-composed material never hurts :rasta:

Yeah - I thought so too until I moved to the Southeast USA where it is very common. Anyway the only relation to jazz is that I like jazz and I also like this very much . .. so forgive the very late-night stretch.

I've had this in my "favorites" for over a year now it's so great. It is a very old type of song - influences can be heard in all kinds of jazz and blues music.

I really don't know much about jazz beyond Miles Davis and John Coltrane, and honestly can't see myself exploring much beyond that. I like Miles' "Kind of Blue" (but doesn't everybody) and "Sketches of Spain" albums though. Have a copy of the former, need to get a copy of the latter.

And whilst were talking about Coltrane,Lets not forget his daughter Alice Coltrane...she put out many spiritual ,psychedelic ,soul searching jazz albums around 1970...Great music for puffin .almost otherworldly .Full of harps and sitars and all kinds of interesting instruments....Her best album "Journey in Sachicanda" is a great listen and one of my favs.Pharoh Sanders can be a bit far out sometimes on his solo albums, but in collaboration he seems best.

And on the subject of harps, when was the last time you heard someone play the harp?Very beautiful and interesting instrument, its like candy for your ears....Dorothy Ashby ..was prob the greatest master of this instrument..her jazz work spanned funk ,psychedelic and classical jazz...dj's sampled her work for many songs ...she was truly a master of her craft..

Herbie Hancock is often remebered for his 80's theme songs, and crap like that .But the guy is literally from another planet, when his sound changed in the 70's,with a group of great musicians .It was like a revolution for jazz fans, the shit is just plain sick .I don't how else to describe it.He still makes appearances at Bonnaroo these days ,and other festivals as well.I had a chance to see him a few times, once with Widespread Panic. He's a great jazz session musician, great with others as well as by himself.
