any exercise nuts out there?

Hey i have a question that hopefully some of you can help me out with. basically, I want to know if there is a way to do cardio without using your legs.

I've been planning to start working out and getting in shape for a long time, it's just really hard for me to do that whem im smoking pot cuz all i want to do is get high. but whenever i quit smoking i love working out cuz i guess the endorphins really help me out when i just want to get high but i can't. when i take a long break from smoking, i end up working out a lot and loving it just as much as i loved smokin pot. well anyways, i had to quit smoking recently due to a workers comp incident that im sure i will probably be drug tested for. so since i quit smoking, this is the perfect time to finally get back in shape like i've been meaning to do for so long. the thing is that I have a torn ACL. Right now i can use my leg pretty much fine but i have to go in for knee surgery in about a month and after the surgery i won't be able to use that leg at all for several months. I definitely plan on lifting weights but i need cardio more than anything, i need to lose weight a lot more than i need to gain.

So does anybody know of a way that i can get some cardio in when im walking around on crutches, unable to put any weight on that leg?

It is a hard sight to see a young man with the pluck all taken out of him by a meager diet, his whole nature starved, degenerated, emasulated. An Englishman cannot fight without beef in his belly, no more can a man thrive on theories of milk. Plank beds, brief sleep and early walks come to nought.
If Ben Franklin ever originated the maxim " Six hours of sleep for a man, Seven for a women and Eight for a fool," he ought uniformly to have practiced by the rule of the last number.
If some fanatic has made you believe that it is good for you to be violently wakend from you sleep at an early hour, and to go into the damp raw air, morning after morning to run with your fast unbroken and your body unfortified by the stimulus of food. I say, forget him and his counsels and take full measure in your rest !

Arm circles... really big ones. Use your Traps in a shrugging motion as you circle with your arms... your upper body will tire eventually... do it gradually/moderately don't go full blown and tear something else.... sit and watch a show and do this for the duration and I'm sure you'll get your heart rate up.....

also a lot of people don't realize that simply pulling in your stomach works your oblique muscles in your gut... pull it in and hold it for as long as you can... if you can do it for 30 seconds your doing good.... incorporate this with the arm circles and you'll be working your heart nicely... :D

Swimming will actually help your ACL and it is very low impact but GREAT Cardio workout. He he remember Rock II I think it is?

Also I know your a guy but yogo is very, very good although it does not feel like cardio you would be surprise how quick you build muscle doing yogo.

Last my favorite is Pliates.....I LOVE this it is a lot like yogo but concentrates more on your mid section (belly) and is low impact.

But everyone will tell you that if you want to get back into shape yes cardio will help. But DIET comes first, then weights, then cardio. Weight training is just as effective if you do upper body while your healing and then start on your legs once it has healed.

If it were me I would start the diet first then a week after that start the weight training then move to some sort of Cardio 2 weeks after starting the weights.

I guess you haven't had surgery for a while,if ever.I've had several knee surgeries over the years and things have really changed. What makes you think you won't be able to use your leg?My last operation they made me WALK out of the hospital. You will start physical therapy immediatly after surgery. The longer you wait to start after the operation, the more damage you are doing. No sitting around recovering any more.Good luck.

cuz the doctor said i won't be able to use my leg. I will be in crutches for several weeks and then i will be able to walk on it but i highly doubt that running would be good for it. he said it will be several months before i can go back to my job because it requires a lot of crouching, climbing, and maneuvering around small spaces. i won't be able to do any of that so i really doubt that running or putting lots of weight on it will be good for it

I sure your doctor knows more than me.That is the way it was for my first surgery in the 80's,but things were much different with later surgeries,5 total. If you don't use that leg for weeks, months your muscles will atrify(sp) and the tendons and ligaments shrink from not being stretched regularly. After my last surgery, about 2 years ago, when I was in PT,there was a guy who had pins and rods sticking out of his leg, from a motorcyle accident, was doing leg presses on the weight machine.Anyway, good luck.
