any AIR POT or smart pot users out there?

D

I have been using red cups till root shoot out the bottom and then transferring them into regular 1 gal but was thinking of switching to smart pots. However I caught root aphids and have been working for 3 turns to rid my garden of them, with out a total re-start. I worry bout them being able to transmit through the smart pots since you can’t really scrub them out.

How do you coco in smart pot users clean up or sterilize?

One thing i like about smart pots after having pest problems, is the fact here are no easy holes for fungus gnats to crawl through. I recently started using smart pots with a layer of perlite on top of my coco and this really makes it tough for fungus gnats to take hold (aphids on the other hand laugh at it all).

I've been using 3g Airpot II's. Had great results. After my cycle I even had the chance to combine two pots to become one. Pretty cool feature. It created a super strong root structure. I'll post photos next round.

I've also tried smart pots in non-canna plants and I prefer the airpots. They are easier to handle on a day to day basis. a lot cleaner too.

better than the conventional plastic low drainage pot? who knows...

Maybe use all three and we can find out once and for all. Thanks for posting this. Interesting topic.

good point on the holes on the side and the bugs. I haven't seen that yet but now I'm going to be a bit paranoid. :p

FWIW In a totally non scientific side by side, i seem to get a slightly lower yield from a 3Gal smart pot than i do from a 5Gal bucket.

Any bigger and the smart pots get too difficult to easily move around (IMHO).

I've tried the air pruning thing for my last 4 grows in 5 gal pots. To be honest, there has been no difference in plant size or yield.

how hard would it be to make your own smartpots out of landscape fabric, thats all they look like to me?. someones making a killin. i might give it a go¬)

Not very hard at all. Some people here have mentioned that certain grocery stores use very similar material for their reusable grocery bags. I've reused the same half dozen 2 gallon smart pots many times over now. You can hand wash them with a bit of oxyclean and then run them in a washer to rinse and spin dry and keep on using them. If you search on YouTube there is a guy that shows you how he transplants from smart pot to smart pot and how he washes them up to look like new, to reuse again and again.

IME, the biggest benefit of smart pots is larger plants for smaller pots. Cannabis has a relatively short lifespan so no need to go overboard on size, especially if using coco.

To expand on that a bit, a smaller smart pot will mean more air pruning so more root mass. If you're using a large smart pot you'll have to spend more time developing your root mass (vegging) to see the benefits and most growers don't want to veg that long.

That's the way I see it anyway.

I use 1L airpots until up-pot to either a 1 or 2 gallon airpot.
A part of my reason to up-pot is space limitations.
I see no reason to up-pot when using root pruning containers using coco as a hydro medium.
Though it would be next to impossible to hand water the smaller containers during the height of flowering.

I am on 8 weeks of flowering with a pretty bad root aphid infestation. Some plants are insmart pots and other are in regular containers and grow bags. The plants in the smartpots have been able to fight through the root aphids A LOT better. Plenty of dmage on all plants, but same plant, same size container, smart pots are clearly healthier.

I veg in 1L plastic pots, then I transplant them into 3 or 5 gallon smart pots.

I use Gold Label coco and then I top dress with between 16 and 32 ounces of playground sand.

My veg and flower are done on 4'x8' tables, flood and drain. I could not be happier with the results. The smart pots work great in the flood and drain system. They definitely help with the gnats.

After the harvest I'll let the root ball dry out. Once it's dry the root ball comes out easily. I'll use a brush to clean out the coco, and then I wash them on delicate with Oxyclean and then dry them on the delicate cycle.

Hey whats up air and smart pot users. Ive been using the same 2 gal smart pots for about two years and love them. I have used bigger 3 gal smart pots and noticed no diferences in yeild/growth. After a 9-10 week flowering cycle I always peel off the smart pot and examine my root mass. You will not see one root that spirals around the pot. The 2 gallon root mass is so dense its almost hard as a rock. I actualy take a knife and cut it in half to really see the massive amount of tiny roots that have split off after air pruning. I hear many arguments that these products dont work, but after seeing my roots after a long grow in small pots I am convinced. Furthermore, so many people claim smart pots are a rip off and too expensive. I will admit they are more expensive than a standard plastic pot, but come on is 4-5 bucks really that bad when they can last for years? Remember that roots need oxygen to thrive, and plastic just does not breathe as well as smart or air pots. Well thats my 2 cents on the subject. I enjoyed this thread, keep it up. Take it easy everyone. Peace

I actually just order some 3gal n 5gal with handles. Pretty cheap so might as well do a side by side. Ive used a roots organic one beforethat I got as a gift and I'll tell ya it's def convenient Also as far as tight spaces you could sometimes sneak by those few inches because of the fabric flexibilities and even get one more to fit in there snug. Like a tent. Its def worked out. Hey to be honest it can't hurt to try something new here n there to keep in funky n fresh (in all dif aspects)

whats up gents. im looking to try smart pots and had a question. how is the runoff drainage? im using coco hempys now and use saucers to catch the runoff. to be honest its getting kinda annoying dumpin the runoff everytime i water lol. i was planning on switching back to dwc but then i thought about these and coco is so easy lol kinda hard to let it go. will i need saucer with these too? is runoff necessary with these like in other containers?

When I ran a smart pot. The run off is almost nothing. Def not as bad as anything else. Almost non existent from what my experience was. Def another plus about them

It's my first time using smart-pots, so maybe I am not using them correctly, but I get some run-off from the sides and had to purchase some saucers to avoid water leaks. What do you do to prevent it?
