Another variac vs triac speed controller

Hey how did the OP make out with their choice of speed controller?

I just bought a S&P-150 and am trying to decide on the proper controller, whether I buy their own recommended controller, or if I can use the "Speedster"??

This controller looks nice for fans up to 1.5 amps, fantech fg 6xl is 1.48 amps max.
*edit* Never mind, this thing did not work unless it was turned up all the way. *edit*

I suppose it's a choice, but why spend the same or more on something you will be pushing to it's limit, when you can buy a 5.0A controller for the same or less?

They said it helps with electrical noise at lower speeds.
*edit* It sure did, lower speeds = not powering the fan. *edit*

I made a 2 speed variac controller which was very easy to put together.

It runs on low (40%) when temps are under 25 and high (65%) when temps are over 27C settings are due to my fan + filter being over ftw!

Very effective and eliminates motor hum completely. Electronic based controllers will always make your fans hum @ lower speeds. I had a SMS speed controller which was did well at controlling the temperature but made my fan hum real bad.

Oh well, I have a S&P TD-1000/200 Silent and it's not that silent.. what's the final verdict on this issue? S&P sell now a controller REB-1N small and cheap.. but I'll hate it and myself it I find it hums, so I'm crawling..
