That's pretty weak, flying Green Harvest the second week of November. They are only two months LATE. That's all. You know, as a grower, I find it to be typical of the way things work around here. And thank god for that.

But on the other hand, as a taxpayer, I find it an outragous waste of our hard earn....shit! No. I can't pull that one off. Honestly, I could give a rats ass....I'm just jellous they didn't come up to my door the second week of November. I would have told them I have hundreds of tiny plants scattered all around, now go find ,em.

Moving along....

Winter is here. Or what passes for it. Up here it gets a little colder than at sea level, so fireplaces are lit, and the air smells of Keawe smoke. Out come the long sleve shirts and out come the extra blankets, and suddenly the dogs are being invited to sleep on the bed, like they ever needed that invitation. The sky gets a little more blue, and about once a week or so, cold fronts are pushed down and sometimes over us, a day or two, or fourty, who knows?

I almost envy you guys on the mainland. There, you have no hope for a winter harvest, so you go do fun stuff. Weed? Unless indoors, not gonna happen. None of the maybes we see every year this time.

So, you want to pull a Winter harvest?

Gotta ask. What's in it for me?

I don't know. Many things have to fall into place. In Summer gifts are given to you, come Winter it takes some work and a lotta luck.

This would be the time to skip right to the end and find out instead of allowing me to screw with you for the next few months, except it hasn't been written yet, so that won't work.

Let's start with the ground rules.

Sunlight. It's there, alot weaker, and on a far different track than Summer. Every second is precious. If there is shit between the sun and your plants, that shit has to go.

picture.php

Photoperiod. Remember in Summer how your Skunkdog clones took twelve week to finish? Not in Winter. Winter is more like 56 days until take. Since these plants finish far more quickly than normal, all you need is a couple of weeks of good sun at the end for a sucessfull harvest. since it's Winter, your chances of getting that two weeks of perfect are..... not good.

Plant Count. What a quaint idea. Why bother? They won't be back up until April. As the saying goes; No cop, no crime. Besides, what really sucks in Winter is;

Yield. Excuse me. Hahahahahaahhaahahahaha. There ain't none! It's ALMOST pointless. Three a plant at best. But you throw a couple of hundred out there and they will add up. Put two weeks of sunny weather out there just before you take, ehhh, you could strike gold. If not it all goes into the shitter, and you strike mold.

Well, If you want to do this right, and remember, nowhere have I said ANYTHING about doing that here, you gotta prepare youself for a hard slog. The way to do this is with sheer numbers, be fully prepared for the weather not to cooperate.

Am I gonna try to beat the odds and give this a crack? Probably. With the wet Fall, harvest here wasn't the best. Other peoples, not me. The demand for what I put away was more than expected, so, only thing left to do is make more.

There are a few thing your gonna have to do to mentaly prepare for Winter. The first is you forget all about Summer. Good or bad it is in the past. Always look foreward. Expect failure. That way if it happens you were right. If it doen't, So what? You can bitch about being wrong all the way to the bank.

What kinda year we gonna have? Wet or dry? Pick one, you have a 50% chance of being right. It's been wet so far, that seems to be a safe bet. Wet year plant more clones, they do better, mold less than plants from seed. Clones will yield less, but a safer bet.

Wanna make seeds? Do it now. Actually your late by a month. See? Take a couple of weeks off and you miss deadlines. Thank Jebus this one isn't set in stone. Watch out. Some will be.

Another good thing about winter, since you don't need your entire garden, and it is way cooler, this would be the time to fertilize for the next year and fix or modify anything that isn't working out perfectly. Here is a dead spot the dogs were kind enough to start work on. Now I can make it better, maybe make room for another Summer plant.

So the adventure begins. This one ain't flashy, nor is there a good chance of sucess.

But ya' never know unless ya' give it a go.
