anonymous and free phone calls!

Im sure everyone here can put this to good use. Ive signed up for a few different numbers already...

google.com now owns/runs www.grandcentral.com and offers FREE phone numbers, call screening, forwarding, voicemail, etc. all you need is a valid email address to sign up with.

I already cancelled my old $60/month cell phone and now Im getting a much cheaper plan because google will make all my outgoing calls incoming and free! (by calling my phone, calling the person I intend to call, and connecting us).

It really kicks ass, Im sure some of you will find it useful... I feel so secure with google's privacy policy Id almost give my number out on this site, (almost)

So i heard about this. This is a very big step. Just imagine what all the cellphone companys are thinking. They are going to be royally fucked up the ass.

exactly, they lost $60/month from me (and probably tons of others) already. Im not even sure I need another cell phone. I may conduct all business through the free voicemail. I hate being a slave to my phone anyway, I have to be available to anyone who wants to call me 24 hours a day.... FUCK THAT

damn thanks for the heads up, although skype and internet phone stuff has always been available, but this makes it even more viable.

can you use it with a cell phone? without having a plan from any cellphone company? don't you have to buy service from some phonecompany to enable google to call you?

Its definitely free. After all, its easier to monitor people's conversations when you just "hand them the keys" so to speak. National Security depends on the masses being good little Borg and being assimilated.

google has a much better privacy policy than most cellular providers... but if they have a warrant the govt is gonna get your info weather its on grandcentral or in some verizon database.

so who exactly is monitoring my conversations, and why is it easier this way?

Nice. I made an account when I first saw this thread this morning, and then I got an email this afternoon saying that they had a spot for me.
Can I have multiple numbers under one account?

Im sure it feels crappy... Obviously it *could* be tapped, just like your phone *could* be tapped... but its just another tool, and its up to you to use it properly. I just wanted to let people know its there.

TGS, I havent figured that out, all my numbers have different accounts.

i can't use it because my ip is outside the USA :-(

anyone care to help me find a non-restricted anonymous proxy within the US or set up an account for me?

edit: said ip instead of proxy, whoops

OK So I'm confused. I went to sign up for it and it said I need a phone number already. Can I just get the worst plan my provider has and then use a grandcenteral number to make it free? Can someone explain this to me please?

I am unclear on that, as well-- I didn't understand the part about making your calls incoming, helping to lower the cost...as I get charged for both on my cell--

The biggest plus I have seen so far tho, is not having to hand out multiple numbers...just have one, and direct it to ring your others--

It will make the calls free IF you dont have to pay for incoming calls. Which is why Im switching cellular plans to one that I pay by the minute for outgoing calls. You just click a button on their web page, and your cell phone rings, answer it, a voice says "please wait while we connect you ..." then it starts ringing whoever you told it to call.

Just a tip to keep your registration a bit more "secure" ...
Of course you should know wifi is your friend.
Then for those of of you that need a phone number, you can register for AOL's free phone number service and get a free phone number to register your account on GC instead of using a cell or landline that's in your name.

Enjoy
