NEW DELHI, India (AP) — An Indian runner who won a silver medal in the women's 800 meters at the Asian Games failed a gender test and was stripped of the medal.

Shanti Sounderajan, 25, took the gender test in Doha, Qatar, after placing second.

The Indian Olympic Association said Monday it has been told by the Olympic Council of Asia that the 25-year-old runner was disqualified.

"IOA has asked the Athletic Federation of India to return the medal as desired by the Olympic Council of Asia," the Indian Olympic group said.

The IOA also asked its medical commission to inquire into Sounderajan's case and report within 10 days.

There are no compulsory gender tests during events sanctioned by track and field's international ruling body, but athletes may be asked to take a gender test. The medical evaluation panel usually includes a gynecologist, endocrinologist, psychologist and internal medicine specialist.

An Indian athletics official who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media said Sounderajan almost certainly never had sex-change surgery.

Instead, the official said Sounderajan appeared to have "abnormal chromosomes." The official also said the test revealed more Y chromosomes than allowed.

Sounderajan was not immediately available for comment.

So maybe now she's really confused. Kinda would be considered gay no matter which way she goes. What a bummer. How shocking if she didn't know before.

We're in the age of mutants, I guess.

I get this mental image of Shanti Sounderajan... She scratches her balls and ponders her next move... to San Francisco.

It's a bitch when these issues are raised after the medals are distributed. Shouldn't they being doing these tests, especially a fucking gender test...before the actual games begin? Doing random dope tests during the games are ok, because I suppose u can take performance enhancers after the events begin, but a gender test?!?! Come on!!!

But what's fucked up to the core is that not a single domestic sporting authority even raised this concern and Santi has been in the domestic sports scene for quite a while. If the sporting authorities of India couldn't even do a simple gender test this whole time, then I wonder at what level their dedication towards their designated duties are at. Certainly not a good sign for Indian sports fans for the upcoming Olympic games.

One one hand, tho, I'm pretty dang skeptical about the whole sex change surgery because Santi because her parents were brick layers. The amount of $$$ required to do such an operation will most certainly not fit the pockets of a brick layer. And if my memory serves me correctly, sex change operations are very illegal in Santi's home state (Tamil Nadu).

Can a brick layer's income afford transport to another state where it's legal, book a private hospital and arrange a sex change surgery  And the last I checked, Santi's parents didn't even have enough $$$ to pay for 2 vegetarian meals a day.

Are we sure she's not an "it" naturally? Ya know, has both sets of parts, one set more developed than the other?

Yeah, doesn't this person have a birth certificate? Don't doctors determine this sort of thing one way or the other at birth? Enquiring minds want to know!!

Most in India, especially in the lower / lower middle income ranges don't give birth in the hospital- they conceive in their homes...

The government hospitals that are free (and w/ skilled doctors) have a HUGE waiting list- the total population of this country is 1.2 billion. And the private hospitals which offer quick service service charge bills that is way beyond the purse of a person making incomes in the lower / lower middle income range.

Well aside from some extra randy hospital employees I doubt there are many pregnancies conceived in hospitals. :)

I confess, I'm US-centric, but I don't think that being born at home precludes being issued a birth certificate. Both of my parents were DIY jobs at home, both had birth certs. Perhaps some ingrained snobbery there, the question would have been better phrased 'doctor or midwife' rather than just doctor.

Do you remember Soviet and East Germany "female" athletes from 70's and 80's? Man, most of 'em looked like trans-gender. And they won a lots of medals. O.K. let say they all were real woman. But they were clearly high on testosterone. So, what makes a woman with male hormones? A Butch-dyke, transexual or a Olympic champion?

this is hilarious, this all basically translates as idiots trying to be scientific, no more, no less :D
so some douchebags do a blood test on an athlete who was not born with a penis, and since they have placed science over reason, they now conclude that the result of their infantile tests actually show that the woman is really a man even if she has no penis :biglaugh:

Men dont have to have a penis, take a knife to your self and that counts. Not saying to do that.. Just that male is in the genetics not the penis, look at flowering plants, they can be male.

In India, birth certs really served no real purpose, so plenty simply don't bother with them. Unless your father is a large scale businessman who travels w/ family to foreign countrys, or you wanted to study abroad, or you worked for a foreign company, birth certs are really redundant. They don't have as much importance as they do in the West. The concept of "birthdays" are only present amongst the urban middle / upper middle / upper class. Most in the rural areas dont even know what a "birthday" is.

You don't need some formality like the SSN (social security number- for which u need a birth cert) to get a job, or get admittance in college. Usually, the most "important" piece of data was perhaps your "caste", because the more "backward (historically oppressed)" castes do tend to get special relaxations of norms when it came to applying for jobs or for colleges. But birth certs??? And if you really need a cert, fakes are readily available.

In the 80s and even 90s, for example, most local job apps did have a "DOB" section, but I've never seen it being verified even once.

obviously.
however, if a human is born with a vagina and not a penis, you can bet your ass that the gender of that human is female :D
