Neil Armstrong was a quiet self-described nerdy engineer who became a global hero when as a steely-nerved pilot he made "one giant leap for mankind" with a small step on to the moon. The modest man who had people on Earth entranced and awed from almost a quarter million miles away has died. He was 82.

Armstrong died following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures, a statement Saturday from his family said. It didn't say where he died.

Armstrong commanded the Apollo 11 spacecraft that landed on the moon July 20, 1969, capping the most daring of the 20th century's scientific expeditions. His first words after setting foot on the surface are etched in history books and the memories of those who heard them in a live broadcast.

"That's one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind," Armstrong said.

R.I.P. Neil Armstrong.......

RIP Neil, if only people today had your courage and forward thinking, we would still have a real and far better funded space program today!

R.I.P. Neil. He has always been in my mind as one of the truly great humans. What I admired was his steadfast refusal to cash in on being Neil Armstrong. He was in a rarified atmosphere with people like the Wright brothers, Yuri Gagarin, and Magellan; someone whose name will be in history books forever, and who opted never to use his accomplishment to his financial advantage. Think of the millions he could have made as a spokesman or endorser, but he chose the high road.

Pioneer, Legend, Trailblazer........how many words can be used to describe a man who changed the human race forever. Albeit, he did not do so single handedly but yet the feat is no less species altering!
He shunned the limelight and ultimately, isn't that what showed his true colour and character........
May the soil rest softly upon your bones........

RIP

In the 1970,s , me and my friends would pass joints and say, "this is one small puff for me, and one large puff for mankind". RIP Neil Armstrong.
