PHOENIX (KPHO/KTVK) - Want to make politicians squirm these days? Ask them what they think about Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Racist-Sheriff-Joe.jpg

Since taking office over 23 years ago, politicians of all strips have sought to align themselves with the iconic lawman.

From city council candidates to presidential hopefuls, they competed for Arpaio's blessing.

And just as many have stood up for the sheriff, even as he found himself wrapped up in controversy after controversy.

However, since admitting in court last week that he was investigating the wife of the federal judge overseeing his contempt hearing, that might be changing.

For many years I've believed, based on experiences of various sorts, that inside many law enforcement officers is a well-honed criminal (albeit frightened) dying to get out...

They reveal it in their assumptions that they and the 'criminal element' are the only ones who understand street jargon, they reveal it in their ultimate disrespect for the law when they regard -themselves- as -being- tantamount to the law. And in other ways as well.

This is Sherriff Joe's '15 minutes of fame' to let his ego and narcissism out in 'full parade dress.' His respect for the law he swore to uphold is evident in his disrespect for that very law in his actions; the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights, at least in theory, being the -ultimate- law of the land (in a more perfect world, anyway).

Unfortunately, Sherriff Joe's not even a truly honorable or productive criminal (*Some of my best friends are 'criminals') .

Maybe if he were to go plant a good crop of clean, high-grade ganja, he'd transform himself into some positive use to the world. Right now he's just Archie Bunker with a badge, and an even bigger ego.

It's hard to say. Before he got all up in the face of the DoJ & the federal judiciary he had home court advantage & Arizona State referees who'd let him get away with almost anything. Now he's on the other side of it, playing by other people's rules. They may not give him the grand cornholio, but he'll think they are before they're done with him.

Agreed, but the 'other side of it'....good ol' boy's club (alive and thriving everywhere), and turning a blind eye. Betcha he'll only receive a slap on the wrist, if anything.

Do wish he would have to endure "tent life" and bad food rations for a few months or more...as he grinninly enjoyed those in jail had to experience.

If more testimony to the effect that Arpaio deliberately violated the court order comes to light he will be liable for criminal contempt, not civil contempt where he merely neglected to do so. Should that happen, he can be jailed forthwith w/o bail on the Judge's say so alone while awaiting trial on the actual charge.

Arpaio can't rely on the loyalty of his minions at this point, certainly not after his right hand guy rolled on him. Should any of the other co-defendants do the same, he's toast. If Joe isn't smart enough to resign voluntarily & throw himself at the mercy of the court over civil contempt then the judge can easily force him out via a criminal contempt charge.

I figure that the judge is holding the exit door open for him but I doubt that will last forever. The judge doesn't want a martyr, he just wants Arpaio to resign in disgrace & will likely force that if necessary. He'll let Joe sweat for awhile to see if he'll come to his senses. If not, it's probably hammer time.

When I was in jail in Az I was not guilty of any crime, just being held for court. Since I was from Seattle and living in a hotel I was considered a Flight Risk and couldn't get a bail bondsman to cover me. I had to actually put my house up to get out. Charges were dropped for lack of evidence btw.

So are people being held treated any different than those being punished? Not a chance. Everyone is treated like shit, and if you beat your charges that is just the way the cookie crumbles. I was treated like shit for three weeks and then released when a witness to my crime could not be found. I hold a lot of deep resentment for that whole affair.

Old joe was a covert undercover narco agent during the "southamerican colombian" drugwar days.
He has unbelievably powerful resources, of which many are vastly
unknown and shadowed by DEA policy and sub-agency's.
the majority of these agency's are "non-profit" tax exempt.
If the old boy gets any type of publicized judgment...it will undoubtedly
be a dog a pony show....
