I read this thread:

http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=72483

And realized I had to write this thread rather than just post a reply.

You’ve all heard about it. There’s a pandemic going on in the Western world. Obesity increases faster than the polar ice is melting.
In rogue states such as Mississippi and West Virginia, the number of people considered obese are close to 1 out of 3, and the Department of Health and Human Resources (HHS) estimates that 64% of all Americans are presently overweight.

And it’s getting worse. Fast.

The culprit is junk food, and overeating. When you say junk food, most people think of fast food such as hamburgers, but it includes any type of food that is overcooked (cooking food ruins vitamins, fibers and the enzymes that the body needs to digest it) or saturated with fat, salt and sugar. Your grandma’s apple pie is also junk food.

Let’s use pizza as an example. It is presently the world’s most popular dish, and is served everywhere in various forms and sizes. Pizza consists of a flat bread made out of the least nutritious type of flour. On it you put some processed tomato sauce or ketchup, then a layer of fatty cheese (generally mozzarella), and top with scraps of meat, veggies or whatever. The whole thing is cooked in an oven heated at 450F/230º, in order to kill the few, surviving vitamins in there.

It is fat, salty and contains practically nothing that your body needs to function properly in terms of nutrients and fibers. You might as well just soak some cardboard, flavor it with curry and eat it. Comes out even. Compare it to if you would stuff that pizza into a mixer, run it with some water into a solution and feed it to your plants. They would soon croak from lack of vital nutrients. Your body is a somewhat more complex machine than a plant, but you eventually croak from this type of ‘non-food’ yourself.

Fat, overweight or simply junk food eating people contract the following ailments and diseases:

• Hypertension
• Dyslipidemia (high total cholesterol)
• Type 2 diabetes
• Coronary heart disease
• Stroke
• Gallbladder disease
• Osteoarthritis
• Sleep apnea and respiratory problems
• Some cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon)

Not to forget a lousy sex life, or no sex life at all. Heart attack is the #1 death cause in the world, and the #1 premature death cause in the western world. Junk food (together with alcohol and Tobacco) is the #1 cause of heart attack.
Which means that people that potentially could live long and healthy lives eat themselves to illnesses and death, simply because they are unwilling or unable to distinguish ‘good’ food from ‘bad’ food.

Who provides the ‘bad’ food? The food and restaurant industry simply looves pizza (still just the top of the ice berg).
It is extremely cheap to make (high quality vegetables, fruit and meat is expensive because the raw products are expensive), while people for some strange reason accept to pay high prices for the finished product. How much do you pay for a take-away pizza today? At least $10. Probably cost around a dollar or less to manufacture. That’s good profit. Only plumbers and Cocaine drug lords have a better profit ratio.

In terms of addictiveness, junk food addicts psychologically. You develop bad eating habits successively, and at the same time as you develop that craving for fatty/salty/sugary foods, you often develop a dislike for non-fatty/salty/sugary foods.

So, let’s bring this together into a conclusion.

Junk food is a drug, if you accept the reasoning that psychological addictiveness is a form of addictiveness. In any case, it is a really bad 'habit'.

Junk food makes you physically ill and kills you prematurely.

While the junk food industry profits greatly from manufacturing and selling junk food, junk food costs society astronomical amounts of money in terms of hospitalization, medication, lowered productivity (fat people are less fit to work), etc.

We’re talking about the most dangerous drug the industrialized society has ever encountered. The ill-effects of crack, heroine or amphetamines cannot even be compared, and even mentioning Cannabis in this context would be utterly ridiculous, since it never killed or made anyone sick, and wouldn’t cost society a cent if billions of taxpayer’s money weren’t pumped into a fictive “War on Drugs”.

So my question to the ass-hats that pretend to run America is:

What is the difference between a drug dealer that stalks the schoolyard, and the candy machines you find in the school lobby?

IMO, it has more to do with your exercise level, and less about what you eat. I eat pizza and taco's probably 5 out of the 7 days of the week. I also work out 4 days a week, run 3 days a week, play football, soccer, handball, and basketball every week. I don't have a six-pack, but I have a pretty nice body. People sit in front of the TV, that's the real problem.

A stroke is a heart attack?

I do agree with you though, but I don't believe its something you can control. You cannot stop junk food being sold. I'm sure we've all made poor lifestyle choices in the past (hint, smoking weed isnt too good for you either) and the very fact that the government already intrude into my personal haits is bad enough, I wouldn't want to see them prohibiting the sale of cheeseburgers either.

I don't eat that crap because its terrible for you, its expensive and I see every day the damage that it causes (and im not even in the US). It is a horribly hypocritical situation to outlaw various drugs but allow people to wolf down such dangerous food but the alternative isn't much better.

The reason this has become such a huge problem in the states, and to a lesser extent here in the UK is the widespread availability and acceptance of this food. People are busier these days and are using this as an excuse not to cook proper meals anymore. The general population aren't too smart either, a "busy" mother is all too willing to stop off at the mcdonalds inside the walmart owned monstrosity of a supermarket to feed her badly behaved and hungry kids because its an easy option, an option tailored precisely to her needs at that point. She probably knows she's hurting herself and her kids but does not particularly care - we live in a quick fix instant gratifcation society: feel hungry? theres a mcdonalds or a burger king rarely more than a few minutes away that will feed you, it'll kill you in the end but at that very moment all too many people will shrug that little caveat off and satisfy their urges.

Education is the key, stopping the sale of this crap in schools is the key also. I remember being taught about healthy eating habits while the halls were full of vending machines and we were being offered pizza and burgers for lunch. Kids are also notoriously fussy eaters and will nine times out of ten prefer the fatty, salty, sweet, processed products because they cater to a bland palate and advertise/package it in a way kids appreciate. They're pack animals too, if their friends are eating it then they're not likely to break with convention and whip out a bag of carrot sticks.

We drive our cars instead of walking, in the US i've always found cities simply aren't built for pedestrians and public transport is often quite bad - everyone has a car and uses it for even the shortest journeys. The UK isn't much better and theres signs of this epidemic spreading to most of western europe also. We're all too rich and comfortable, most people can afford a car and make excessive use of it. We take in all this high energy, high fat food and never even come close to burning it off.

Basically our own success has ****ed us but we've allowed it to happen because to stop it would be infringing upon a lot of the fundamental rights we have as first world citizens. All we can hope to do is educate the masses and take suitable measures to control the unacceptable promotion and sale of junk food like in schools but don't expect to see your local mcdonalds or bk closing down anytime soon.

Your muscular structure does not denote health. Check your triglycerides and blood sugar, officer. When doing autopsies on vetereans coming home from Vietnam in body bags, most of the early 20 year old men were in great outer-physical shape, but had arteries as clogged as any 50 year old.

Sorry officer, but your outer looks are not the end story.

Good point...

Within the last ten years or so, I've watched as snack food corporations have slowly began infiltrating middle and high schools. First it was snack and soda machines. Then, it progressed to selling fast food for lunch in a school cafeteria...

A quick 'for instance':

The high school I attended as a youngster was sponsored by Pepsi. Pepsi machines were everywhere, Pepsi propaganda hung on the scoreboard and in the halls. And every wednesday, the cafeteria would sell Papa John's Pizza by the slice. If you didn't approve of what was being offered in the cafeteria, you could opt to purchase candy bars and chips out of the vending machines, which I saw a number of my peers doing, and did a few times myself.

I suppose it's only a matter of time until the cafeteria is shut down and replaced by fast food stands, a la mall food courts...

I was under the assumption that schools exist to benefit the child, but it seems lately that they are simply interested in appeasing them...

However, the obesity epidemic is also about self-control. Remember, you don't HAVE to buy that king size Snickers...

I bike for transportation which helps alot and i try to eat as best i can when ever i can.

I think it is a huge problem and if you think it's just in the USA your wrong. Europe, China, and many 3rd world countries around the world are fattening up on American fast food and modern processed foods. There was a whole issue of scientific american about the obesity epidemic all around the world.

You only get a fraction of the article for free online here it is
Over the past 20 years a dramatic transition has altered the diet and health of hundreds of millions of people across the Third World. For most developing nations, obesity has emerged as a more serious health threat than hunger. In countries such as Mexico, Egypt and South Africa, more than half the adults are either overweight (possessing a body mass index, or BMI, of 25 or higher) or obese (possessing a BMI of 30 or higher). In virtually all of Latin America and much of the Middle East and North Africa, at least one out of four adults is overweight. Although undernutrition and famine remain significant problems in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, even desperately poor countries such as Nigeria and Uganda are wrestling with the dilemma of obesity. Worldwide, more than 1.3 billion people are overweight, whereas only about 800 million are underweight—and these statistics are diverging rapidly.

Funny this is here. I just weighed myself and I lost 5 pounds. Still, 200 pounds is overweight. What I need is exercise.

Read Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser - that puts you right off the really nasty greasy stuff.

Staying healthy is important. That's why I live on canna and coffee. Your body is a temple - mine is a temple made of nepalese temple ball hash with Thai girls dancing in the corners and a band funking it up.

The best food is not a $0.99 cheeseburger washed down with a bathtub of coke. The best food is a well prepared meal cooked at home by yourself, the way you like it. Or if you don't or can't cook, by mom or your wife just the way you like it. The problem is money and time. People see the instant gratification given from fast food and don't want to expend the extra effort to cook.
Take for instance person 1 playing Halo 3 starts to get hungry. He brushes the empty bottles of Bawls off himself and makes the arduous journey towards the fridge. Mostly drinks and breakfast items, nothing here. He checks the freezer. Hamburger meat. A hamburger sounds good right about now...
But he thinks to himself, I don't have a lot of time to wait for it to defrost, let alone cook it. Then slice onions, and rip off some lettuce. Then clean up his mess and wash the dishes after he's done.
He looks out the window and sees the alluring McDonalds sign. He makes a decision to spend a few bucks and get a coke, a Big Mac, and a bucket of salty fries.
After inhaling his meal, he rolls it up in a bag and tosses it in the trash. Mission accomplished.
Some people can say that doing this costs too much money, and I agree it is a bad idea to blow your money around on fast food all the time when you can just buy some actual groceries and make it yourself for less and enjoy it more, but fast food tastes too damn good and is just... fast.
By the time you are done eating and on the brink of a coma from your 3 snackwraps 1 bigmac supersized fry and gallon of soda, the other guy is still slicing green peppers and measuring out oils to add to his food.
Some people can't cook for shit, and some people are too ****ing lazy to help themselves.

Fast food industry capitalized on this and the end result was a contribution to some of the fattest slobs in the world. And these fat slobs don't care.
I walked around downtown and saw this man who needed a cane to walk and had tits the size of my head go up to a hotdog vendor and get 4 hotdogs all with the same thing, all of the condiments and chili and onions and cheese.
I got 1 hotdog with mustard and onions, and I thought I was supposed to feel guilty.

I'm totally down with that statement. Pizza Hut, Papa Johns, Dominos... all of that is pure ass.

Pizza parlor pizza and general pizza parlor italian food is the main thing I miss about living in Brooklyn. It's one of the very few things, though

I wasn't actually proposing to put all fat people in concentration camps. I wanted to highlight the fact that Cannabis is a drug about as dangerous as coffee, while junk food is a "drug" problem that ruin people lives, eventually kills them, and cost society a serious amount of cash.

Cannabis is illegal, Cannabis users and producers are fined and put in jail.

Junk food users and producers are free to do what they want.

It's once again Alice in woderland, where the innocent are punished and the guilty aquitted.

I heard some voices saying that eating pizza (still just an example) isn't that bad, especially if you exercise.
It's true, eating one pizza isn't going to kill you. Snorting coke once isn't going to kill you either, it's having a line every day for every occasion that should make you wonder where you're heading.
Burning fat through excercise is great, but it doesn't cover for the fact that if you eat crap, it comes out on your health in one way or another. Try pissing in your gas tank, it's the same thing. If you don't give your body the fuel it's supposed to have, it won't run correctly, and will brake down prematurely.

Except for the "cooked" part. Cooking foodstuff - as said already - ruins vitamines, fibers and enzymes naturally present in it vital for your bodily functions.

There are undisputable scientific evidence showing that cooked food is bad for you.

When a toxic substance enters your body (metabolism), the body responds by sending white blood cells to intercept the substance, in order to break it down. This is the immune system of the body.

In the early 20th century, when science learned how it worked, a systematic testing of substances started. When a substance was injected in the blood stream in microscopic amounts, if the body reacted with the white blood cell response, a substance was 'bad' for the body, and if it didn't then not.

By accident, researchers found that after eating cooked food, the body reacts exactly as if a toxic substance entered the blood stream, by sending white blood cells to the stomach to intercept it. They also found that raw food does not provoke this reaction.

The logical conclusion? Your own body conciders cooked food as a toxic substance.

Always be a little bit hungry.

Yes. Basically a hunter-gatherer diet is the diet that reproduces what man is supposed to eat in his natural state. I've moved more and more towards raw foodism over the years, and it's clear that my health has profited immensely since. I would like to take it even further, but it's hard to live on game kills and wild growing plants in a big city.

Always stay a little hungry allows you to live longer, and also makes you smarter. This has been scientifically proven.

I still don't think employers should charge overweight people more for insurance... WTF? RP needs to take out the "insurance" agencies that are just money banks--take much give little as possible.

Again, the economy plays a role... everyone having to work all the time just to make ends meet. No time for cooking at home. Keep Americans running senseless and they become clouded with petty isses (like making a living, right!!) and ignore the bigger picture of what is taking place.

Eat less.

Peace.
