Good discussion, I have nothing to add as my chem days are VERY far behind me.

I'm still hoping someone can tell me what happens to the "good stuff" ( THC , turpentines ) that's dissolved in the alcohol as some of that alcohol evaporates off. My guess is it moves to the remaining alcohol to the point of saturation upon which it would start to precipitate out. I base this on what I've seen with ISO hash/oil. I'd just like someone with an understanding of chemistry to explain the science of it all.

Peace
When the alcohol evaporates off the resins will come out of solution and precipitate out. Take Sativex for example - if you poured it into a bowl and let the solvent evaporate off, all you would be left with is honey oil and peppermint flavouring. Same thing happens with tinctures.

I am keen to try the heat activated tinc just for the hell of it.
Hi Moose. I have a great Green Dragon recipe at TY that uses the heat method. I thought I posted it here but could not find it.

I think you would like this method. It is very medicating.

Drugley posted Master Wu's Definitive Green Dragon recipe. That's what got me started on tincture. I recommend going to the Def. GD thread on cannabis.com under the "concentrates" forum. It's a very long thread, & if you want to be as sure as possible that your tincture will work, I'd read the whole thing.

To be clear: alcoholic tincture of cannbis is liquid hash oil. If you evaporate all the alc & water off (& you will pretty much always have at least some water - pure ethanol will pull water from the atmosphere), you have hash oil. Probably fairly nasty hash oil, as ethanol is a whale of a solvent & it strips various compounds that do not get you high but do taste bad. Butane is a much more selective solvent, & that's why it is considered to make the best hash oil.

But you sure as hell can't drink butane.

So - the evaporation temp of cannabinoid resin is far higher than that of alcohol. Evaporation results in stronger (& stronger tasting) tincture. BTW, reducing the tincture by evaporation will leave a film of hash oil on the inside of the jar or bottle or whatever. You want to wash that back into the liquid.

I steep cracked cardamom seeds & cinnamon stick in the alcohol for a couple of hours, strain it, & make the tincture with the infused alc. It really helps with the flavor.

I use 4 grams of bud & 4 oz alc (in two washes) - 50% reduction - 2 oz of finished tincture; depending on the batch, 1-3 ml is a nice dose for me.

I think this stuff's the greatest.

Wow...Thanks for all the good info everyone!

Has anyone done an alcohol extraction using water cured herb? bounty29 mentioned it and it sounds like it might be a good idea.

I haven't tried it myself; IIRC a couple of folks who tried it reported it wasn't worth the effort.

I might try it if I had some spare bud on hand....

Some rather trollish posts have been removed from the thread. I would request that the topic of making tinctures be stuck to, not wild accusations of tincture and edibles causing insanity. Thank you all for your cooperation.

Um, what exactly do y'all mean by "medical grade tincture"?

Just curious.
It means, not recreational.

From what I understand, the point of a medical grade tincture isn't to get you high; it's to relieve pain.
