Any lovers of the blues might want to tune into PBS tonight...it's on from 8 pm to 9:30 pm in Portland...

Here is a review:

"Recorded for a television program of the same name back in 1983, In Session bills itself as the only known recording of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Albert King, who was Vaughan's idol and mentor, playing together.

That leads to some heavy expectations, which fortunately aren't disappointed, at least if you aren't expecting the customary over-the-top performances Vaughan was famous for. His playing here is much more laid-back and controlled, which is actually a recommendation--the stylistic similarities between teacher and student are that much more pronounced.

The songs are mostly King concert staples, with the exception of "Pride and Joy"; highlights include the T-Bone Walker classic "Call It Stormy Monday" and one of King's own, "Overall Junction," which features some excellent guitar solo work.

The snippets of recorded conversation between songs are interesting curiosities as well." --Genevieve Williams

Just a heads up for lovers of Stevie and/or Albert.

Hey Cosmic...

It was on last night, Friday, at least where I live. Might be on again though...PBS seems to re-broadcast this stuff. Especially these shows that are used by them to drum up donations...

My little review: 'Twas OK, the parts where Stevie Ray and Albert were playing were great. Nice to see a young boyish looking Stevie, could tell he was thrilled to be playing with one of his hero's. Don't expect the typical ROCKIN performance you would see in his shows with Double Trouble.

The reason it was only OK is because PBS was using the show to raise funds, and so it was interrupted about every 15 minutes or so by the fundraising part. I ended up only watching about an hour of it, switched to the show Grimm at 9...I don't miss any Grimm shows.

If you're a big fan of either of these guys, especially SRV, you can just purchase the DVD and avoid all the fundraising crappola.

SRV must have had the strongest fingers known to the human race. Huge bends on 12s man. When he does the Hendrix stuff, he does the same uber bends with vibrato, on 12s, that Jimi used 8s and banjo strings for. My weedy little fingers would crumble. Seriously, his strings are like bridge cables. If he broke a string, someone in the front row got their head cut off probably.
He also had some of the best "Guitar face" expressions, along with Robin Trower.

That wasn't on around here, maybe it'll be on sometime later. But tonight's Muddy Waters with the Stones!

Good find BB! I still don't remember to check youtube enough...seems like almost everything is on there nowadays.

I was wondering what to watch tonight on TV...this thread got me thinking why not hit up the 'ol DVD shelf in the concert section. So, after further review....I picked Stevie Ray and Double Trouble Live At The El Mocambo. Stevie be SWEATING in this show, but I guess that is true for most.

Love the blues! But, Stevie Ray's music was like food to my soul and it broke my heart the day he died! I still wonder at, "what might have been!" What with Jimi, Janis, The Lizard King, Lennon, Harrison, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, and all those too soon gone, ya, Heaven's got a hell of a band! A long time gone, but never forgotten, RIP Mr. Vaughan!

Damn....that was awesome. Went and looked on youtube and found it, for those who care to be blown away. This is supposedly the digitally remastered version, not sure what I have on DVD. Anybody who watches this is in for a real treat. All 4 parts total about 1 hour.
