AK-47: Sure Shot from Serious Seeds

In 2008, I ordered a single pack of Serious Seed's AK-47 from Seed Boutique. Due to my transient state of affairs at the time, I was only able to run two females from the pack as moms. One was an indica looking plant, the other a more sativa-looking plant. This report is on the sativa-leaning phenotype with which I have more experience.

  • Bag Appeal @ 8/10 I often find that a positive first impression is all it takes to please the folks who get their hands on my bud. Let's face it, most ganja-consumers are un-educated when it comes to good bud, so unless there's something wrong with it, it's probably going to move. These buds are big & covered in resin. That's the first thing people see, and after that they seem content to check it out more closely once they're home with it! The firmness of the buds can throw some folks off until they try it. It's just got more of a sativa structure, but when you're used to commercial mids that are primarily denser nugs, this can be a big change.
  • Smell @ 5/10 Not much smell there to be honest, and I'm sticking my nose in a 1.25 gallon jar that's full of the stuff as we speak and it's been in there for about 2 months. Many folks talk about the cherry pheno of AK, but I've read multiple posts by Simon saying that in his experience the cherry smells goes away once dried & cured, and that he hasn't found a cherry pheno. Regardless, this cut doesn't have much of a smell. I gave it a 5 becuase there's nothing negative about the smell. In my humble opinion, there are plenty of smells I don't like in my end product (cat piss & pine are two that I don't enjoy), and this doesn't have any of those, so it gets a 5.
  • Taste @ 7/10 There's not much of a taste to this one other than a generic spicy sativaish taste. Like the smell, there's nothing bad about it, but not much really stands out either. If someone were standing next to me smoking it, I'd know it was good bud and not some schwag, but it it's no Bubblegum, that's for sure.
  • Potency @ 9/10 This stuff gets the job done! It hits you just as hard in the head as it does the body. A few of my buddies who aren't regular smokers always make sure to ask now if what I'm giving them is AK, because the first time I gave it to them they freaked out and were all paranoid, saying it was too strong!
  • Quality of the High @ 7/10 For an hour after smoking it I can't sit still or relax. Smoke this stuff when you need to be out getting things done. If you smoke in the morning though be ready to smoke all day in order to function! The shorter-lasting sativa effect needs to be "topped-off" if you don't want to go into the more couchlock state that comes next. There's a little bit of a raciness to the high and it can really get your heart going. It's not intense paranoia or anything negative like that, but pulling a big tube is a rush for sure.
  • Cultivation Notes: This plant couldn't be easier to grow. I had high temps and it was my first time growing larger plants, and I still didi alright. From looking around the web and talking to folks who have grown the legit AK, it seems that AK has always basically broken down into two major pheno's: the indica types and the sativa types. AK breeds pretty true for many traits, and all in all it served as a great way to educated myself on growing hybrids. As someone who had grown mostly indicas at the time, getting a wide array of hybrid plant structures to play with, yet still have them breed true for things like potency, bud size, smell, and other important traits was great. Although I chose not to keep the mom long-term, I refer to AK as a "Sure Shot" in this post because she'll yield a ton of product relative to the space you give her and it's strong stuff. For many folks that's enough!

I agree with almost all of what you say, but I can't agree with the "no smell" part.

Just the other day, my live in girlfriend (who doesn't smoke, but ought to be used to smelling it) walked into the room as I was taking a few nugs out of the jar and she said, "Eww! It smells like someone hit a skunk with their car and it sprayed our living room!" She was standing about 10 feet away when she said it, too.

If I dry too fast or over dry it it tends to lose its smell but if I jar it when the buds are still sticky and then burp it for a few weeks it's STANKY by 3-4 weeks in the jar.

Stanky like people walking past me if I'm carrying a small amount (under an 1/8) saying "man, I smell some GOOD shit!" and looking around for the source.

Mine is a few years (2005ish) older than yours. Maybe it's a pheno thing.

(For the record, I tend to disbelieve all the "Cherry Pheno" hype, myself. My stuff tastes like fruity skunk hash.)

Fair enough. . .

Although I don't doubt that the ability to retain smell when put into glass is a trait that can differ just like any other trait, I will say that I should have wrote, "Not much of a unique smell to be honest," instead.

I wouldn't even think of putting some into a plastic bag of any type and then putting it into my pocket before heading out. Unique smell or not, it still smells like top-shelf ganj. . .

Thanks for stopping by for the read. I wish we could sit down with a grinder at my coffee table and compare samples! :smoke out:

My Ak47 is from 2010 I believe and it's the best smelling herb I've ever come across. Mine smells like mangoes and ginger, though I suppose that's phenotype dependent. I even had some fellas review it for me like you did above and both members at the other forum agreed that the aroma is superb. Nice write up!

I'd love to run AK, but I cant get with any strain that has even a hint of paranoia.

Hey B (thank you for this thread) possibly a stupid question here but does Serious still carry the original AK-47? I looked on the bay ..no luck, Seed Boutique...no luck? Am I doing something wrong or do I have to fly to the UK or Amsterdam to get the genetics?

Just wondering?

They should have them at the 'boo. . . if not, just check back. It's usually listed near the top in the "Most Popular" category, so it might go out of stock/get replenished quite regularly.

Nice report . We have a cut of AK-47 that has been around here for many years and supposedly came from the original release . It is very sativa dominant yet manageable and ready in about 65 days . Very distinctive haze flavor and aroma . You can always tell someones smoking AK when you walk into a room where it's burning . My partners wife's favorite ...little too racy for me ...but I do enjoy an occasional taste .

hehehehe; brings back memories of when i was on serious seeds forum and a moderator there with monkey. i grew several years of the ak-47 and had it start to flower under 18 hour light way before the "autoflower" term was created. i've done all the SS strains; theres only 5, with the kali the only sativa; but others like the ak-47 and the white russian could be 50/50's or sativa doms as you get those nice thin leaves sometimes.

you get the cherry smell sometimes in the ak-47 but its not a "stable" trait; IMHO i think theres a wee bit of cherrybomb in the mix but simon aint talking. it would make sense but then i've grown blueberry sativa that smelled and tasted like juicy fruit gum. so if you get a cherry; treasure it. it will be in a sativa pheno and that all i can say. its also noticable in a closed indoor grow in weeks 5 & 6 of the 8 week flowering time. let it go 2 more weeks for kick ass dank.

That sounds killer! I'd love to find a sativa-structured & sativa-high pheno that finishes fast. The raciness is there for sure. . . not enough to be too much IMHO, but it's there!

is your report on the regular beans or the fems? I grew AK47 (regular)back in 2000 and it was great, found the cherry pheno loved it and lost it (damn mites). I recently tried the fem version of it and it is noticeably AK47 but is not the too similar to any of the 6 girls that I had back in 2000.

serious fem seeds are a fairly new creation of simons who recently joined with magus to market some lovely ladies like motivation and warlock. keep to the regular seeds. no fems or auto's here

I love AK strains! I have only grown cheaper feminized versions of SS' original, like AK48 from Nirvana, and Pure AK from female seeds. I might actually try Nirvana's again first before getting a SS pack.
My first three grows there was 1 AK plant in my tent each time among other strains, and it was always the first one to disappear into smoke.
The raw potency, the incredibly skunky/floral taste(who wants cherry? This tastes like pot!), the hard tight shiny nuggets... I must say our seems to be more on the indica side of effects - a few hits will get you up but a few more will put your ass in the couch. It is also such fun to grow, she just makes the best of it no matter what you do with her... Finishing fast and heavy :)

My second grow: Pure AK. Don't try things you just read a half sentence about on the internet... Defoliated the shit out of her(this is actually a big and a small plant in one pot) causing some nanners - still got45 grams of her though.

My third grow, threw some vert lightning at her... 106 gram yielder :)
