In 2008, I ordered a single pack of Serious Seed's AK-47 from Seed Boutique. Due to my transient state of affairs at the time, I was only able to run two females from the pack as moms. One was an indica looking plant, the other a more sativa-looking plant. This report is on the sativa-leaning phenotype with which I have more experience.
- Bag Appeal @ 8/10 I often find that a positive first impression is all it takes to please the folks who get their hands on my bud. Let's face it, most ganja-consumers are un-educated when it comes to good bud, so unless there's something wrong with it, it's probably going to move. These buds are big & covered in resin. That's the first thing people see, and after that they seem content to check it out more closely once they're home with it! The firmness of the buds can throw some folks off until they try it. It's just got more of a sativa structure, but when you're used to commercial mids that are primarily denser nugs, this can be a big change.
- Smell @ 5/10 Not much smell there to be honest, and I'm sticking my nose in a 1.25 gallon jar that's full of the stuff as we speak and it's been in there for about 2 months. Many folks talk about the cherry pheno of AK, but I've read multiple posts by Simon saying that in his experience the cherry smells goes away once dried & cured, and that he hasn't found a cherry pheno. Regardless, this cut doesn't have much of a smell. I gave it a 5 becuase there's nothing negative about the smell. In my humble opinion, there are plenty of smells I don't like in my end product (cat piss & pine are two that I don't enjoy), and this doesn't have any of those, so it gets a 5.
- Taste @ 7/10 There's not much of a taste to this one other than a generic spicy sativaish taste. Like the smell, there's nothing bad about it, but not much really stands out either. If someone were standing next to me smoking it, I'd know it was good bud and not some schwag, but it it's no Bubblegum, that's for sure.
- Potency @ 9/10 This stuff gets the job done! It hits you just as hard in the head as it does the body. A few of my buddies who aren't regular smokers always make sure to ask now if what I'm giving them is AK, because the first time I gave it to them they freaked out and were all paranoid, saying it was too strong!
- Quality of the High @ 7/10 For an hour after smoking it I can't sit still or relax. Smoke this stuff when you need to be out getting things done. If you smoke in the morning though be ready to smoke all day in order to function! The shorter-lasting sativa effect needs to be "topped-off" if you don't want to go into the more couchlock state that comes next. There's a little bit of a raciness to the high and it can really get your heart going. It's not intense paranoia or anything negative like that, but pulling a big tube is a rush for sure.
- Cultivation Notes: This plant couldn't be easier to grow. I had high temps and it was my first time growing larger plants, and I still didi alright. From looking around the web and talking to folks who have grown the legit AK, it seems that AK has always basically broken down into two major pheno's: the indica types and the sativa types. AK breeds pretty true for many traits, and all in all it served as a great way to educated myself on growing hybrids. As someone who had grown mostly indicas at the time, getting a wide array of hybrid plant structures to play with, yet still have them breed true for things like potency, bud size, smell, and other important traits was great. Although I chose not to keep the mom long-term, I refer to AK as a "Sure Shot" in this post because she'll yield a ton of product relative to the space you give her and it's strong stuff. For many folks that's enough!
