Air Pots

Hempy coco plant (1 gallon container) vs #1 Smart Pot in coco - strain is Apollo 11. Both clones are @ 21 days in the photo.

I think the smart pot is winning. I would love to get an Air Pot and test it out. I wish I could find a distributor in the US...
why not try a 3rd container w/ regular holes punctured into side of water jug?

~bottom 1/2-2/3...

should find that will get same result as 'air' or 'smart' pots...
w/ simple diy of used plastic... no need to purchase a new product just to hold a plant...

can use solder iron, drill or exacto knife to make xxxx-holes...

or... use needle... if want smaller holes... since roots hairs are small...
Those little fkrs are like hornets, they LOVE HOLES compared to open topsoil, wet or not.

Nothing gets through the felt mesh of SmartPots, keep the top of your soil fairly dry via drip & you're golden in the real world without spray bottles. ;)
dont have issues w/ bugs... nor would holes drilled into buckets suddenly make bugs materialize out of thin air.
...anymore than the 'holes' of the 'air' or 'smart' pot would...
bugs have nothing to do w/ holes, they have to do w/ maintaining a controlled environment...
dont use 'soil', but a coco+perlite/inert rock mix... dont drip feed either... hand-water every few days...
spray bottle is not to water plants, but for preventative maintenance... whatever media is used, h202 can be applied to disinfect, oxidize pests & their eggs, & supply oxygen & hydrogen - both elements the plant uses.

*edit*
are diy 'air'/'smart' pots option?
w/in thread topic scope?
or are they only effective if actual patented product?

enjoy your garden!

I think there is a lot of discussion and not enough testing ;). As earlier explained ALL the roots in the air pot are guided to the outer limits of the pot using the air pot shape. I think air pruning is a proven technique. I don't think though that it will make a lot of difference if you use an air pot or a 18L pot if you just grow a plant 9-10 weeks. For mother plants that is different. Many growers prune the roots of their mothers once in a while. That would not be necessary with air pots.

The mixture you use in an air pot is important too: it need to be very open and have a large water capacity. A good virgin peat substrate would be great.

If the discussion was about imaginary crap that would be hilarious and I think you would also need a special section for that :p

It's the few that try the cutting edge stuff so the others can benefit from their experiences. Much respect for the testers who don't take the safe road but risk their grow using new technology and share the results, whether good or bad.

But I do think that, though in theory these pots work for certain plants (and we are talking about trees and monumental plants here that take a long time to grow), so who is the first to do a good test with the air-pot in a comparison to normal pots?

A special test section is a good idea. We do that a lot on our Dutch forum. Many manufacturers give us (as a forum) very valuable materials to test, which leads to very interesting results and even products being withdrawn from the market because of the results. A few examples: lamps (including Sun Pulse), reflectors, grow tents (even the Mammoth 6x3 meters!), ballasts, nutrients (complete Humboldt line at the moment for exampe), plasma light (yes, that too!!), grow systems, led systems, substrates, tissue culture, Cannalytics kits etc etc.

Now we have our own "lab" as well, thanks to the kind cooperation of a few professional suppliers. A number of our members and mods have been trained as Cannalytics test masters so we do some research in cannabinoids and selection methods as well with that. Alpha Nova provided us with several professional testing kits. We share a lot of our research with our international sister Opengrow.

I really think the practical use is the ultimate test for any gear. It's invaluable feedback for the supplier, and can boost or kill a product. No guts no glory in this market ;)

pfff.. Anesthesia makes me ramble! Sorry :xmasnut:

I'm looking forward to that test report. What substrate did you use? I'm not sure btw if 5 gal is optimal for our short growing period, that depends on a lot of factors.

i used roottrappers from rootmaker.com there 1 dollar for a 1 gallon and 3 for the 5 gallon i think, and the bags have a white outter coating to protect from the light too, very nice material, i dont know what kind it is but feels professional , they also sell the plastic air pot versions too. to order you have to email them and ask for a price list because you have to order at least 50$ worth because the company ships from the manufacture

what all these things have in common is that they guide the roots to prevent them from coiling. Their rootbuilder looks similar as the air pot.

Interesting for outdoor growers on page 10: root skirts :D We use a piece of B&W foil for that or just use white pots ;)

I guess my local buddies are starting to lurk here on ICMAG. Yesterday 'durbanpoison420' strolls into my house with an Airpot. Coincidence? I think not. ;) Guess I'll have to give it a test, then. My main interest in them is if a small plant can successfully be transplanted into a much larger airpot and produce as nice a rootball as if I'd done multiple repots. So, I popped a clone directly from a 9oz solo cup into the airpot, which looks to be about 1-1/2 gallons. I used my normal potting mix, which I throw together 'by eye' each time and varies a bit. It usually consists of some coco, some 'N-Rich' (ground redwood bark with added N) some sand, gravel, kitty litter, perlite and maybe greensand, bloodmeal, compost from the pile, bonemeal, kelpmeal, oystershells and whatever else strikes my fancy. The mix settled quite a bit in the airpot initially, but now it looks ok. There's two lines around the top of undrilled 'cones' that I suspect are for holding the water in, but I didn't fill the pot that far. Next time. I'm off to work now, but I'll try to post a picture of the little-plant-big-airpot combo later today.

I started a grow of Arjans Haze #1 and Arjans Ultra Haze #1 from seed a few weeks ago and was going to use my 20 gallon nursery pots. I just transplanted into #10 Smartpots with Moonshine mix. I am hoping to get the same results with half the soil and weight. Time will tell!

Been using Airpots for a while now and I dont know about side by side grows and all that but I personally will never grow in anything else again. My results have been crazy good with more yield and faster returns on flowering cycles. Now with that said you get gnats! They do love the convieneant little holes. But with kneem and strips I have never had any issues cause by them. As far as saving money, the 5 gallons pots are $5 bucks a piece now and if that is too high a price to pay for these results, maybe this is not the right hobby. Good luck either way and I whole heartedly reccomend these to anyone looking to do big things.

whazzup-i was using chow mix in both coco/hydroton mix.as far as 5 gallons not being optimal do you meen to big? the plants i was growing were between 1-2 lbs a plant depending on veg time. the room consisted of 4 1000w mh in the middle and 8 1000w hps on the outside. sealed room hydro innovations co2 generator and a 3 fan chiller for ac as well as dehumidifiers and a humidifier.the nutes were cana coco a and b with pk13-14 drain to waste.

beautiful garden!... you obviously have your program dialed... whatever containers you select to use... :respect:

h202 (hydrogen peroxide) @ ~1 oz (30ml/2 tbsp) should eliminate any gnats, or other vermin... will also generall disinfect & supply hydrogen + oxygen to plant...

enjoy your garden!

no not too big at all :). I've seen plants in 20 gallons pots under one lamp in scrog.

Nice to see some actual growers feedback about these products.

I too love my AirPots for tonsa reasons ....
1. I bet there's the equivelent of a 5 gal. std pots root system in my lil 3.4 gallon AirPots .
2 The root system is so fiberious it's insane ... nute uptake has gotta be greatly incresed or atleast be done easier / more efficently .
3. Almost impossible to overwater for obvious reasons - = extremely helpful for gungho noobs .
4. Gotta flush a plant due to nute overdose / ph issues etc... dunk the whole sumbitch in a 44 gal. garbagecan of ph adj water n let it drain in another container .

Only thing I do nobodys mentioned is put a circle of fiberglass hosehold screen in the bottoms so there's no mess at all .

I run 20% coir , 20% pearlite , 60% promix bx and treat it like hydro nutewise and get sweet results . In full bloom we only handwater once every other day 64oz each on average , but do go by the containers weight .

Peace all Crispi :santa1:
