After planting germinated seeds...plastic baggies?

First time grower here. We just planted 4 of the seeds we germinated on paper towels last night. They're in 5oz dixie cups in a simple FF potting soil with about 20% perlite (including a layer at the very bottom and holes in the bottom of the cups for draining). Theyre about 3 1/2 feet from our 400 HPS light on a 17 hr day. It's about 82 degrees in the room now with the door open (because it was at 88). Is there anything I'm missing? We messed up the first round of seedlings and just making sure there's not some huge omission.

Thanks:tiphat:

At this point i would keep the soil pretty moist, almost wet until they pop. Then get on schedule. Let it dry out fairly well before you water again.

Im using a 400w MH and it's 24inches for me and working great.

I plant into pots with no domes or misting, no problems.

pretty new myself only on my second grow but seems a little hot try and get it down abit and mybe bring your light down a bit but be carefull not to fry your plants and why 17h most common is 18/6 or 20/4 i would also interduce a fan of some sort it my also help to bring temps down and remmember not to over water them apart from that you sound good to go ant you got no pics and how did you germinate your seed in 1 night mine always take at least 4 to 5 days any way keep it up its all worth it in the end nothing like your own smoke

Simple question: are there holes in the bottoms of those Dixie cups?

Like CFL said, let them dry out pretty good between waterings- overwatering is the biggest trap you can fall into, especially in the seedling stage! And if you don't have holes in the bottoms of those things, put some- and for God's sake, you've gone out and bought a 400W HPS, invest in some real pots! I usually start my seeds in 6" pots, go straight into the soil or in paper towels, either way, and just let them dry out thoroughly (usually takes a couple of weeks or so) before watering again... good luck, my friend!

really...only 2 feet right after they're planted? they're not going to be nuked? they took about 3 1/2 days to germinate. also, it may be 18 hours. gotta check with my growing partner on that ha

if they've only just poked through you will only need to water 1 or twice a week just keep it damp and not to dry out easy to kill em at this stage give it a few weeks and you'll have 5 to 6 inch plants then the fun starts
what seeds are they and are they femanized

yes, there are two holes at the bottom.
the thing is we just planted the germinated seeds about a day ago, so there is nothing really poking through yet. do we still only water once or twice a week? thanks for all the replies btw. a friend who grew helped us on our failed first attempt, but not well enough apparently.

saying how often to water is tough because it's your grow and you have to judge it. the soil wants to be moist but not too wet. at this stage letting them dry out is the worst thing you can do so if in doubt give them a little water. check them at least once or twice a day.

once they pop up then i would have thought 2ft from a 400 should be fine.

next time dont bother with th perlite at the bottom. it doesnt help drainage. just use perlite in the soil mix.

So I just moved the light down to 2 1/2 feet. also, we have aluminum foil lining the bottom foot of the closet all around. I disagreed with this, but it was done. Should I take it down?
