Advice - What to Tell The Electrican

Off topic: but hey SoylentGreen...

come check out my Bunkbed thread. im growing a new strain with the same name as you! lol

I always use fish tanks as my excuse, though I am rarely asked. It helps when asking about parts in the plumbing section of Home Depot too, as they are more likely to ask innocently so I just say I'm making custom fish tank filters and water lines :). This would work for the electrician too as saltwater tanks run several HID lights and draw tons of power.

Warm water aquariums are always a nice excuse too, tell them you ordered it a few days ago and it uses electricity like crazy

thats a great one!! salt water tropical reef aquariums actually use Metal Halides to grow the reef and high powered water pumps, at least 1000w for a 100gallon tank, tell them your setting up a tropical reef/ fish nursery.....

In this day and age I wouldn't tell a stranger anything about the appliances/luxuries I may install in my home, and I'd expect not to be quizzed on my goodies. An electrician only needs to be told what to do in terms he understands,if he's professional it'll end there. All this talk of kilns and aquariums is distracting to me and probably would be to an electrician in the field lol.Now if you want to have sex with the sparky take him or her out somewhere!

I have been away for a few days on business and reviewed all of the ideas to tell the Electrician. Boy!!! You guys are amazing!!! A load of wonderful ideas! I like the idea of a 100 amp sub panel -I want to make sure I have enough power to run all of the equipment. I do plan to install an air conditioner, fans and all of the rest. I only purchase top of the line equipment and don't want any problems down the road.

I am new to the site and love it already!!!! You guys are awesome. I'll keep you all posted on how it goes!!!

Mucho Thanks!!!

Not to bad mouth any electrician BUT a good electrician will ask what kind of loads you will be putting on the system.

The average homeowner usually does not know these numbers (AMPS) which will be required and how many branch circuits are needed.

I would ask the electrician to install a 100 amp sub panel with (7) 20 amp breakers (one for each light or 6 lights total and one breaker for a future dedicated A/C window unit = (7) 20 amp breakers).

I would also add a 8th 20 amp breaker for a CO2 scrubber, music, fans, CO2 equipment.

Some people may try to say that 15 amp breakers will work across the board and they are right but safety comes first and then some. It is overkill just a bit but you will never have to worry about overloading the system and you will have ample room to spare.

I'm a good electrician and you are just plain wrong. The average homeowner certainly has the power to say I want a 60 or 100A subpanel here without divulging another syllable. An idiot electrician that needs to be told more than necessary is not a good electrician,he's an idiot.I would go with a 60A subpanel and run my fixtures at 240V,but thats me.

get EVERYTHING grow related out...maybe say you're into pottery and you need to run a kiln, or make some stuff up that sounds like it uses a lot of electricity--you're setting up a home recording studio or something...you could run that wattage off of your 220 dryer outlet though, you can switch it into 6 112 outlets safely with a conversion board...i'm sure there's directions for a DIY one on here, i used to have one that was built around a water heater timer...i know they make them commercially to buy at grow stores too. that is if you are within range of your dryer...but i guess you could have the electrician throw a 220 outlet into that room, and you could tell him you were gonna put your washer/dryer in there and make it a work room. he'd dedicate a circuit to it and you'd be money, baby!

That must be some high powered music to be off that breaker.

Blockheader - I agree. I feel I should not have to say too much. But you know me being a woman I always seem to have a hard time when it comes to repairs and asking technical questions. I've done my research and you guys have helped me out a great deal. Things should run smooth.
