^ My little Barrio Garden. Different problem here I’ve had to remedy. Same medium as the Ranch Garden but ants are not an issue.

Had to deal with a resident skunk coming in at night and digging up the cucumber and zucchini seeds. Got me for all the zucchini seeds (only growing a single plant for the wife) and a couple of the cucumber sites. Some were untouched and up and running. Some sites had to be replanted. The chicken wire has solved the problem. All good.

This skunk digs for my worm population as well. But that I accept as a tax. My worm population has become prolific over the last few years. Love my worms. I mean this little garden footprint was originally only used as a worm ranch.

Couple things : I did go with the wife and pick up a bag of Happy Frog for the seeds going into grow bags. So a little cheating there.

And we did end up down at the Ranch to just take a look at what popped and survived the ant onslaught. Definitely going to dry the beds out for a few days though. That duff/mulch is retaining water in these conditions almost too well. I think I was overzealous on the watering too. Every medium in every environmental condition reacts differently. Learning curves are a part of the game naturally.

Anyway

^ Getting myself down in the medium for the detailed reality of what is going on.

^ A healthy not ant attacked Hell Mox seedling. I put the cage over it (and others I found) more or less to make sure it’s not birds that are making seedlings disappear. You can see how the water took it out of where it was originally left to soak in to the medium. Seeds by design are travelers.

IMG_5098.jpeg

^ A different Hell Mox sprout that was hammered by some insect. Probably ants. I screened it off…again just to observe what is happening. If the bugs leave it alone for a few days it should be fine.

I found another Eazy Mox Trilogy seedling up but hammered on. Same thing. Screened it off to observe.

Saw signs where a bird or rodent had been digging around but not sure for what. There is all kinds of food for them in this medium….so could be just about anything they were looking for.

Bottom line :

Dry the medium out but keep an eye on it and see what happens. The plants are popping obviously. I’d expect this week to see them more and more. About a week into the ground so yeah…this is the week.

Weather wise we are mostly in the low to mid 70’s. Nights down in the 40’s. Fair enough. But we are going to cool down here and there for the next couple weeks. Not perfect but doable conditions. A couple nights down into mid 30’s. But all and all short of a late cold blast…should be ok.

* I’ll progress the stuff into the grow bags by the end of the week and with good fortune should be able to quickly raise up some back ups or fill ins if I do lose the direct sowed starts.

All the back ups are known girls so that eliminates one step. No sexing required. And well….I was not unhappy with that line up in the 2022 garden. I did use seeds from 2 different mothers with these back ups. Like 15 seeds from each mom.

Also put 4 seeds from the Number 7 mom into natural medium in a 1 gal grow bag not soaked in water or paper towels just to see what happens.

IMG_5106.jpeg

**** One other note I failed to previously mention was that on 4-23 I planted some of H3ad’s SSH X C99 f2 (I made the f2) along the perimeter of one of the plots. I just felt like doing that. The beans were made around 2009-2010. I never grew the f2….or maybe I did. Can’t recall though.

The f1 were made with Rez’s SSH mom that he gifted to H3ad. I found similar representatives to it in Wonder Haze (same clone mom used) but I don’t remember it in the H3ad cross with C99…and I can not find that thread because I can’t find H3ad’s old forum.

The C99 was from H3ad’s backcross project back in the day when C99 was difficult to get a hold of. After Brothers Grimm went defunct. I grew his back cross work and found very nice plants grapefruit and pineapple. I also brought those into the next generation and outcrossed them as well. Just can’t find the documentation.

Be cool if some of those survive the ants. None have popped up at this time.

The new home i moved in several years ago had an ant problem too, eggs everywhere in the garden, so I planted marigold flowers in pots and since then I don't see them anymore. Perhaps an idea to do the same.

Perhaps they have those in your area too. It's good for the skin too.

Love coconut water. Never used on my plants but we have cans of it in the fridge as I type this.

I’ll look into Marigolds. Funny the same medium I’m using at the barrio garden doesn’t have the ant problem. And I compost in it 😂 Egg shells all over. Nature is strange sometimes.

a few cucumber plants and you are set!

i used to lay a clear plastic tarp over the ground for a few weeks to rid the soil from any pests
i always cooked my bag soils (mixes like ff et all)

the skunk is your friend going after slugs and soft bodied critters
coconut water is supposed to be the og electrolyte drink
its good and i always like to add a pinch of salt in mine

I love growing walls of cucumber plants. Fast…big…vines. Don’t like cucumber fruits …can’t tolerate the taste. Pickles though…especially in the summer heat are a runner’s friend. Growing for pickles.

Outdoors it’s always going to be one issue or another thrown at you. That’s the sport of it I suppose.

cucumber in water is also refreshing
i like shredding cucumbers, squeezing off the excess water and mixing it with unflavored greek yogurt
throw in some spices and its a tasty dip

😂 I’d honestly not be able to get it down. The worst for me is when I get invited to somebody’s home for dinner and they serve a salad with cucumbers diced in it. I have to choke it down and chase it with something liquid. It’s just one of those foods I can not eat.

Pickled though. I can crunch them for breakfast. Only in the summer though do I crave pickles. Summer food. Absolutely one of my favorite plants to grow.

Wife does the processing. Not sure what all she uses. Some she does spicy.

Watching a brush fire coming from above the barrio at the moment. This evening’s entertainment along with watching a schizophrenic drug addicted girl drop her pants…to squat and piss. Keeping it real 😂

Fire went 10.5 acres. Arson. They caught the guy. Set 3 different fires is the word. Not very good at it. Should have lit them earlier in the day if he wanted to do real damage.

Yeah…nobody is going to get that girl help. She’s up here all the time at the dope house. I’ve watched her have full conversations with multiple people who are not there. She’s pretty far gone unfortunately. One of many who walk up and down this hill…to and fro the dope house. Cops don’t even attempt to close it down. It’s just how life is.

Nobody fucks with our house or us…so it’s just bad scenery. Never give any of these fools my back though. Some days it looks like a prison yard. But mostly these people are only concerned about getting their drugs. Nothing else matters to them. I have nothing to do with it or them. Civilian.

So it didn’t all burn down. Yeah man I’ve had it all. I like hot food.

Bees attracting too. Never grew chrysanthemum, so I don't know. Certain essential oils of Marigolds what ants don't like, so they stay away.

Big fire going on and a lot of smoke too. Pity of the girl. That's life nowadays.

Somebody wanting to watch the world burn. Not uncommon.

A gifted arsonist can cause a lot of destruction. This guy wasn’t good at it. Probably out of his mind on shit and felt like creating some disaster.

Had he lit it in the early afternoon on a day with more wind it would have more than likely been into houses. He had the slope right….and wind alignment right…just not his timing. Too late in the day.

And he got caught. Now it’s just a mess to clean up. Historical Boston Hill. There’s a trail network up there.

^ The healthy looking Hell Mox seedling from yesterday has taken some abuse since then. Still there though.

IMG_5120.jpeg

^ Freshly sprouted Hell Mox…see how it survives.

IMG_5125.jpeg
IMG_5126.jpeg

^ A couple more EMT seedlings I found this morning. Already hammered on but still there.

Still drying out the medium. We have some winds today helping that process along.

There is an abundance of ants but not much I can do about that at this time.

Same plan. I’ll keep checking on this stuff and see what happens.

Birds are not an issue. It’s the ants. But since putting little cages over the sprouts…none have disappeared.

Check again if I can tomorrow.

Fire Season is starting to pick up. I talked to work today. We’re down to 8 available drivers at the moment…but I’m number 7 in the rotation currently. So I have 6 assignments ahead of me. That could take a week or 2 days before it gets to me again. As fires break the rotation revolves faster. Fire up around Socorro and one in the Dragoon Mnts in SE AZ are growing right now. Smells like money.

^ 2 more Hell Mox

thats sad about the dope girl and ... well its just sad and it sounds like she needs help that she will never get
i think arsonists are a special kind of f'd up, tantamount to someone who would just shoot/drive their car into a crowd of strangers
there is a mental component behind their actions, but it also shows a certain sociopathic mentality where they dont care about who they hurt

i hope that guys rots in jail
/fire is no joke
things are drying out and like you said its getting on to fire season
i think there might be an ants nest near you home and thats where they come from
ants arent bad but sometimes you just dont want them up in your shit
good to see some green shoots popping up and cant wait to see how they look late august
is it time to make the doughnuts? stay safe man and keep your eyes open for any cool shit

I created a perfect home for the ants in that fresh woody mulch I used in those beds. I dug down about 6” in some of the plots today. Still very moist. All the shredded wood chips retain moisture and form easy network runs for the ants. These are the small ants….maybe the Argentina type…or slightly bigger. They bite. I had bare hands in there today…several itchy bites.

But the same medium at the Barrio garden is no way congested with ants like down at the ranch. So yeah…maybe there is just a whole other thing going on down there.

None of my cucumber seedlings are struggling with anything at the barrio. Moving right along. 😂 So I’m very happy I have that going smooth.

Every time I grow Cannabis outdoors I run into some insect or another that just wants to be a pain in my ass. If I get through the ants….there’ll be grasshoppers…get through the grasshoppers…there’ll be caterpillars etc

It’s never : just drop some seeds in some dirt and see you in the fall successful. I know this before I even start.

Lost 3 more sprouts to the ants. They are gone. Checked on the garden this morning. No new sprouts have popped. Still have…I think 8…enduring the onslaught…but don’t have a lot of hope for those either.

IMG_5133.jpeg

^ Put the back up seeds into bags. With any luck these pop up and get going and find their way down into the battlefield at a bigger size.

IMG_5132.jpeg

^ starting this book today. I run on McComa Mountain not infrequently. Beautiful views from up there. It’s named after this family. Massacred about 20 miles from here. I’ve also been to that site.

Fitting book for this stage of this year’s cannabis garden experience. My seedlings are getting massacred. Hopefully the tide will turn for me and this garden.

* Got word that we are sending equipment to the fire in the Dragoon Mnts. starting today. So the rotation is revolving.

man, thats wild the ants are getting into your garden
i dotn usually have ant problems until later in the season when they try and cultivate herds of aphids so they can milk their sweet sap
i wonder if diatomaceous earth would keep them away from the plants?

that looks like a really interesting read and it is even better when it ties into your local history
