You are right that the habitual aspect plays a large part but nicotine is an addictive substance and people have been known to get addicted to nicotine replacement therapy, the gum in particular. ;)

Frank, you're doing great man, stick with it so you never have to go through those 19 hours again. ;)

You do see people addicted to patches...gum, patches, electric cigs..anything with nicotine in them.
People also can become addicted to non nicotine things like ordinary gum or sweets...what ever they used to give up smoking!
But I do have it on good authority, Nicotine Is an addictive drug. It affects lots of the body's systems and the body does become dependent on these feelings it produces. Very intense and harsh effects! These don't go unnoticed!

Anyway, I have to give up soon :(
Best of luck to all who are!

Everybody has there method. I dont remember the day I quit, but I remember why. The price of cigs went up by 3x or more. I took the pack I had threw it out the window and I as done! I bought another pack the next day. I lit the cig felt guilty and threw the pack out again. Never bought another pack again. It has to be around ten years. The hardest part to quitting for me, was watching other people smoke. So I bummed smokes from my friends for about 2 years. Not many maybe 1-5 a night depending on how much we were drinking that night. 10 years later cig smoke bothers me as much as it did my wife when I smoked around her. You have to have STRONG WILLPOWER or you will probably fail. If the gadgets help your mind, USE THEM! =]

Nicotine is addictive. Smoking acts on the reward pathways of your brain. Nicotine mimics the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. The oral fixation is a part of it... but imo, not a huge part. I have no problem switching from cigs to dip (to get a nic fix) and know many people who have quit using snus or skoal patches (why they don't go with long cut? I don't know)

To all those who are pondering quitting just think... the carbon monoxide in cigarette smoke has a higher affinity for the hemoglobin in red blood cells than oxygen (hemoglobin is more attracted to carbon monoxide than oxygen). When you smoke, you're robbing your blood of oxygen, making you heart work harder to get more oxygen to all the tissues in your body (which is why your heart rate increases). You're literally poisoning yourself with carbon monoxide. Nasty, isn't it? Not to mention all the other shit it does to your body...

I usually want to punch small children in the face after 24hrs w/o a cigarette. I am not ready to quit. Not afraid of failure, just not 'ready.'

Hello All,

Its been 9 years now since I gave up my 27 year habit to Phillip Morris...cold turkey.

Not nearly as hard as I thought...just replace the activitiy of smoking with something else...change of habit.

For example, when I finished eating, the first thing I would do was have a smoke....I replaced that with brushing my teeth.

When hit with a sudden craving....I would get up and pick up the living room or wash my face....it helped to do something rather then sit and crave.

It worked for me anyway...just some thoughts to help you along.

way to go Cocktail frank, you are almost over the worst bit, best of luck to you.

my self: 34 years old, started smoking at 15-16 years of age. have stopped 2-3 times, one time for over one year. My lungs "rot" from the smoke, and sometimes they leak a bit of air. and it all get painful as fuck. Phnaumotorax sucks. I had it quit bad when i was younger, but now that i have been an on/off smoker, i can feel how the smoke affect it,

then i have MS. so my boddy cant probably don't deal whit all the chemicals in camels. (writing this, reminded me, and i had a smoke, fuck I feel weak)
And i had one granddad that died of smoking, and another one that got lung cancer without smoking, and died.

My normal smoking pattern over the last few years has been 1-6 weeks smoke free, then one trip to the kiosk to play lotto, and whit out even thinking of buying smokes, i end up whit a pack. I have to get better at resisting the urge to buy Sig's. because i am normally OK if i don't have them.
My second big problem is joints, i have for as long as have smoked herb, mixed it whit a bit of tobacco, and this keeps the addiction, and make the habbit impossible to kick, since if there is tobacco around i end up smoking, or just making a joint more for the baccki then the herb.
Over christmas I was on a holiday whit a smoker, and I bought a pack of 5 Cuban cigars. for new year, and general enjoyment. and to nobody's surprise i ended up smoking again. and i still do after coming home. almost half pack/day. and if i don't stop soon it will be a pack a day.

it is time to stop, once and for all. no more.

Not true man ;) You sound like you have convinced yourself already that it's not possible. Make yourself know you are going to succeed, even if you don't feel like it a positive outlook works wonders. Read the guide on page 1, it might help. :) I once thought I was passed saving too, if I can kick the habit, anyone can.

I am sorry, i formulated myself poorly, it is not impossible, but the herb/tabbac joints keep the "background " addiction up. so i need to find a better way to smoke the herb.
i did read the guide, it was helpful, thank you for posting.
I have already kicked the habit more than once, and for long enough to get the poisons out of my system. and i know how good it feels, i want it again for myself.
Not impossible, but it sure as hell don't help eather

i quit 15 years ago, using ganja as my substitute.

every morning i would roll 10 spliffs. when i felt like a ciggie, i lit up a spliff. after 3 weeks of this i had no more cravings. headaches etc... but i still had the "habit" cravings (after a meal, on break at work etc..)

so id go outside the restaurant/work and fire one up in the ally. smoked it like a ciggie, never had anyone say shit. (yes i was super stoned at work,,,,who would know?)

eventually i developed different patterns and no longer felt the "wheres my smokes" feeling.

screw carrot sticks, ganja substitution FTW.
