a simple safety suggestion

No offense OP but why the fuck would you advise people to voluntarily put them self in a vulnerable and possibly incriminating situation? NEVER OPEN THE DOOR!!! Its been said a million times, but should be reiterated daily

no advice was given to open the door, reread the original post
this was directed for people that choose to open the door
IF you do open the door, it makes sense to have your ID with you
i have no statistics, but i believe many people with grows do open the door to the knocking LEO
whether that is a bad decision, that's up to their judgment

As many have stated already and i will repeat it to hammer it into your head.

Why even open the door if you know it is a pig? You are under no legal obligation to open the door for pigs! Ignore them. Let them knock all day if they want. Go to the back porch and have some suds while the rottie watches the door. They will get tired of it.

IF they had a warrant they would come in no matter what even if you are there or not.

Why do people insist on talking to those lying scumbags?

I had a knock on my door one day and all i heard was: "Open up POLICE!". I ignored it. Got my heart racing a bit but i ignored it and they went away. Turned out one of my friends played a cruel trick and he heard about it later from me.

Dont talk to those friggen idiots. Even opening a little window in your front door will be turned into: " I smelled marijuana your honor!". Even though he could not smell shit.

We have phones and computers and what not to communicate with each other instead of using smoke signs like in the old days lol and I really really don't understand why one would want to open a freaking door and doesn't....

Have an Intercom to blow them off.

If they already have a search warrant...they wouldn't be knocking @ your door...they would be knocking it down instead!

for 90%+ of the readership here, maybe more, this likely very good advice
the idea is there is no legal harm from not opening your door, at least in most cases
this is what a lawyer will tell you

each of our circumstances are a little different
my stealth is extreme, finding(or suspecting) my grow is going to be very difficult, i have no fear when i open my door

and in this one case, i was glad i did
cop is looking for cars with my make/model, there was a convenience store holdup in the area
just wanted to know where my car was that day
looks me over and i can see he's already filed me under 'this is not the guy'
now if had blew him off, i would probably have moved up from 'knock and talk' to 'suspect'

again, not advising anyone to change their 'door opening' policy

this is actually a good idea, and have considered it
i may be a little over confidant, i really have no concern in opening my door
this is just me, and is probably peculiar to my own circumstances

Keep in mind you have more to protect than "just" your grow.

These days there are just too many Douchebags snooping around the neighborhoods!

thanks for the tips StrainHunter, i'd rep you but i must have done that too recently
stealth is a religion with me
my grow is micro
i also have some inside knowledge of LE practices in my area, which is why i'm somewhat relaxed
there's always risk, no way around it

I understand where you are coming from.

Thing is it is my principle to treat people coming to my door w/o calling first from a distance @ first to check out their intentions - whether that be Jehovah's Witnesses, the driving around Lawn Guy looking for a job, FedEx/UPS or the crook trying to take a peak inside my 4 walls...or to "just" test out if and when who is home...

Just too many things than can (and do) go wrong these days, no matter where one lives.

:)

that is the safe practice, understand completely
now i'm not saying i live in Mayberry, but it's a very low crime area
burglaries are very rare, and just about everything else
and for those that just check the last post of a thread
don't think i'm advising to throw open your door to LE on a whim
original point was if you should think it advisable, have your ID with you, it's a low effort thing to do

I step outside for anyone who knocks b/c I have cats, and if I don't, one of them will run out. Just step outside, and say I have cats and I have to make sure they don't get outside. Acting normal and not suspicious is the best way to deflect attention from yourself.

Here is the bottom line: if a cop comes to your door HE has to assume that you are in fact the legal resident. Cops cannopt come to your door and demand ID. If they have probable cause to believe a crime has been committed, then they must get a warrant.

Cops LIE and BLUFF all the time, but when it gets to court all their bullshit stops. Cops CANNOT merely march up to a private residence and demand ID. If a cop comes to your door, NEVER open it unless they have a warrant. Cops cannot legally lie and say they have a warrant when they do not to gain entry.

Having an INTERCOM is the best way to deal with cops...simply tell them on the speaker that your attorney is being called and that you refuse entry unless a warrant is offered.

That puts a halt to the talk and lies...then the filthy cops must either violate your rights openly, or go away. Likley they will go away.

NEVER EVER give in and never believe anything a scumbag cop says....they are all LIARS from birth.

intercoms are a good idea, or any way you can talk without opening the door
the more options you have, the better
but i think(this is think, IANAL) you could be in jeopardy when opening door without ID
TexasToker had a post a page back on certain states and producing ID
this was in regard to old professor of Obama's who refused to provide ID
he didn't feel he should have to, and you can understand the point of view
but they charged him anyways
