a simple safety suggestion

this may already be well known, but i haven't seen it posted
so from a number of posts, i do see a favorite LE question for you when you open your door is 'could i see some identification'
and i know, 'don't open you door to the police', but this for those who do
the answer is always have your wallet/id on your person
if you go inside, LE seems to follow along much of the time
and once inside, risks go up

Here, here! I second this suggestion. Because if you are going to assists the cops in making your arrest, why would you want to be half assed about it?

Maybe I'm being very ignorant, but was never ever told that I needed to carry my 'papers' to be alive in the US...?

That is funny this post came up. Wife and I were looking at a new front door, and we decided on a door with a 4x6" viewing door instead of a peep-hole. It has wrought-iron security rails around the opening as well. It cost a bit though.

well, proof of alive they probably can see
but the issue is, do you belong in the residence? are you the real resident?
this has been used many a time to gain entry
if you recall the black harvard professor who refused to provide ID because he knew he was who he said he was
didn't fly, that resulted in the 'beer summit' at the white house with the LEO, professor, and barak

If they can come through the door they will(warrent), if they can't, then F'em, they can try to ID me by looking at my bare ass pressed up to the glass.

Knock all day if you want.

With this door, I can hand out my ID with my address on it if needed. I agree with having it on you at the door. I am not -that- paranoid though, and if I did not have it, I would tell the officer politely to wait as I retrieved it. He has no legal reason to enter, and I would not let a stranger in, so why can he come in?

That professor violated a law that requires you to show ID if requested. He was being stupid.

Supreme Court has upheld state laws requiring citizens to disclose their identity to police when officers have reasonable suspicion to believe criminal activity may be taking place (which is their discretion). Commonly known as "stop-and-identify" statutes, these laws permit police to arrest criminal suspects who refuse to identify themselves.

As of 2009 the following states use this statute.
Alabama
Arizona
Arkansas
Colorado
Delaware
Florida
Georgia
Illinois
Indiana
Kansas
Louisiana
Missouri
Montana
Nebraska
Nevada
New Hampshire
New Mexico
New York
North Dakota
Ohio
Rhode Island
Utah
Vermont
Wisconsin

LOL... yes, definitely recall...

I get there might be consequences for holding the line, but it is nonetheless there... the problem as I see it is that they will keep pushing & pushing & pushing until you cave... or hold the line.

Worst case, they HAVE to arrest you to hold... if you are willing to really hold your guns... and they damn well better have a REAL reason... but I've got an attorney on retainer, so...

I can be in another persons home w/o ID... even if they catch me coming out of the door... even if they claim whatever... that part isn't illegal... you aren't required to present your papers! Or answer the door, as pointed out already...

If they are there & really have a reason to go in... doesn't matter about who you are or whether or not you have an ID... shit already went down.

Lawyer on retainer... almost should be issued to every person at birth... in the US at least...

Really? Above the board??? Not the BS tactics that cops use... even if illegal...

I can see it... shit, we have sodomy laws in many states regulating what a couple can/can't do in bed, so... crazy stuff indeed

Be safe everyone... shoot first, ask questions later ;-)

dont answer, if they got a warrant they will come in anyhow. best bet is to tell em to hold on a second and going out back door if you got one then meet them out front.

Supermanlives got it right, they only knock when they're at your house looking for enough evidence to GET a warrant! Don't give it to them!

Makes me long for ye olden days of pouring boiling oil upon unwelcome visitors, and moats to keep them away in the first place.

I already have designed a solar-powered drawbridge which I WILL have someday. Cops are gonna need to drop in by helicopter if they want to bother me, lol

Have an Intercom to blow them off.

If they already have a search warrant...they wouldn't be knocking @ your door...they would be knocking it down instead!

great info TexasToker, +rep on providing that state info
there really are 2 camps, 1 is never open, the other isn't so sure
my POV is it's a judgment call, really depends on your situation
for some that seem to have big grows, i can understand not opening
but if you're in a 'low risk' category, this tactic is going to get you noticed IMHO
i'm sure your name is going down as suspected grower, and they may not be able to get in right away, but they will be looking for a way to get a look inside
and imagine they eventually will find a snitch that will say whatever they want him to say after a while

igrowone, dude, are you just kidding or are you seriously advocating this outlandish position. All you are doing by going out to talk to the pigs with or w/o ID is give them a voluntary interrogation session. And what do you think you will achieve by talking freely to piggy wiggies? Certainly you will not convinve them of anything when you refuse to let them search your house. So why bother talking to them at all?

If you really are foolhardy enough to do this, then at least take a video camera out and record the whole incident. It will be the only way that your story will have any kind of weight to it in court.

Lastly, if the cops are at your door wanting to speak with you about growing, wouldn't you already be on the "suspected growers" list?

I know your curiosity wants to know what they want, but do not open that door, there is just no upside to doing so, think about it, what can the police do with anything you say? Here's a hint, it's in your miranda rights, they can, and will(says it in the miranda) use what you say AGAINST you in a court of law.
So tell me again why you would ever open your door to warrentless cops?

it really depends on the situation. i have had the police come to my door, and i have spoken to them
they weren't looking for a grow, and i pretty much knew that, it was about something unrelated
many police stop bys are not grow related
now if you feel at risk, that they are stopping by for a 'are you growing?' talk, then i'd agree, pretty much a no win talking to them

no one that knows me would likely guess that i have a grow
if you have a 'squeaky clean' setup, chances are they aren't looking
now if i had had blown them off, say being in plain view, and just ignored them, that's probably going to be seen as i've got something cooking
i think that would have put me on the radar

but i do agree with the video deal, that is something i'm going to get setup as soon as possible

What if there was a kid lost, or a neighborhood crime and they needed to ask me if I have seen anything...oh wait...they don't do that anymore.

Actually...a few weeks back that actually did happen to my neighbor. Someone busted the window out of his truck, (just for fun?) and the cops knocked on his door to tell him that his truck and 4 others on his street were vandalized and they caught the kids.

NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER OPEN YOUR DOOR TO THE POLICE.
GO TO A WINDOW, OPEN IT. TELL THEM YOU ARE BUSY AND
IF THEY DO NOT HAVE A WARRANT TO PLEASE GET THE
FUCK OFF MY PROPERTY.

My dog was in his house one night, there were 2 cushions
in the back room that had those ( do not remove this
tag under penalty of law) I have them ripped off.
Anyway, this bitch I cleaning for me very suspiciously
showed up at a weird time, she was just going blah
blah blah. Looking around. She's my cleaning lady
but she had cleaned the day before so when she
showed up , when she knew I was still in bed,
acting like she was gonna clean SOME MORE.

15 hours later the cops knocked on my dogs
door. They wanted to do what's known as
a "knock and talk" My dog told them to get
fucked. It scared him though. His tail is
still between his legs.

They knocked on your dogs door?

Well if you live with a criminal you can expect that. I would send my dog to ASPCA if cops showed up knocking on his door. They say dogs are man's best friends, but I think your dog may have ulterior motives. (maybe he is banging the cleaning lady?)
