A Question For Growers and Breeders

Hello,

Say that you plant a package of seeds, and within a week or so, you see that some seedlings are very vigorous, and others are slow to grow. Do you select the most vigorous to grow, and eliminate the runts, or do you grow all of them out.

Thanks :canabis:

Grow them all!!

Grow them all!!

Males are usually more vigorous to begin with. You do not want to discard your females.
Take care........................CC
Some plants just grow slow in veg and are real monsters in flower.

I really think it depends on a lot of things but mostly, cost of seeds, number of seeds used and what your looking for. If you are only using 10 seeds, and you assume half are male, then killing the less vigorous ones may not be a good idea because you are really only working with 5 or less plants (for practical purposes you can't assume anything more then 50/50 ratio, in fact I expect less). Killing 2 or 3 runts bring that down to maybe only 2-3 plants to choose a mom from. But if your dropping a whole lot of seeds (30-50) and just hoping for that one perfect mom then it may be a good idea. At some I plan to germ like 100 bagseeds, only take the ones that sprout good tails in like 24-36 hours, then cut out the least vigorous half of the group every two weeks. When the seeds are free killing a potentially (although unlikely) beauty aint a big deal. But when each bean is costing 15 bucks i couldn't imagine just killing it. Oh and dont forget room. If you have absolutely no problem with lack of space them then I really can't see a reason to do it at all. Just my opinions goodluck, btw what strain you working with?

Damn I was really gonna say what crip just did but I wasnt so sure if it was true or one of those things I just read somewhere and liked so i started believing it, lol.

Been my experience that the plants that look the most vigorous and most healthy, especially in the earlier stages of vegetation, are almost undoubtedly male. And to go a little further, it sometimes even depends whose seeds/variety you are growing. If you are growing say Blueberry or anything with BB in it, then the runt or deformed plant may well be the pick of the litter. Have to grow them out. There really is no other way.

Thanks for the info everyone. The strains are Femaleseeds Maroc, and Nirvana Haze. I noticed some of the smaller seedlings have some purple or red color in the stem. I have a good soil mix that I have used for a long time so I know that is OK. I have previously sprouted two seeds of Nirvana Haze, and they were both male, but man did they have a strong smell. I have eight seedlings of the Nirvana Haze now, so I will see what happens.

What CC said,

The males are typically the most vigorous and look pretty as hell.

Some people cull the biggest and the smallest of every batch as a practice.

Grow them all out though to pick the best of the batch

S1's are a different story

I have to say in my experience (not always) they are female's. Ones that grow slower. Just because they are slow top grow doesnt mean they will be any wors off then the other plants.

Thanks everyone

You have given me the inspiration to grow them all and see what happens. There is one small seedling that is quite dark and purple/red. Maybe it will turn out to be a gem. I also have three Dutch Passion Flo and five Nirvana California Orange that are all looking good.

Please don't laugh, these are just babies. I will be doing some transplanting soon.

From my expierence, males are definately more vigorous. But don't think every vigorous seedling is a male. I've had quite a few ultra vigorous females. Everyone has their theories and thoughts and voodoo they believe in. The only way to tell, is preflowers and flowering.

You should put them all in seperate individual containers when you transplant. It makes seperating the males from females alot easier. Solo plastic cups work great, punch a bunch of holes first.

I usually...

I usually...

Pull the runts, and flower any tall plants I think are male 1st... to make sure, then they get pulled... or cloned if promising... or sometimes cut back and saved... Went from (25) 3 wker's to 15 to end up with 4 females and 2 males... and probably end up with 50 seeds from 2 similiar X'ing's... but I knew what I was selecting for... and trying to avoid... peace. :joint:

Thanks for the info. I have some small plastic cups that I will transplant them into when they get the second set of real leaves.

Peace all.
