most people in towns and cities speak good English, even in the villages they can speak it quite well.. English and Urdu are the official languages of Pakistan, but most people speak Punjabi followed by henko

Greetings apachen, sorry for the late reply, I actually haven't connected in weeks.

I haven't been yet to Afghanistan, so can't really recommend any place. Well there's Mazar e Sharif of course, up to you to decide if situation is quiet enough to go. Otherwise Peshawar is fll of gardah and charas, but you can also score in Chitral which is much quieter, Gilgit too and most certainly all over Pakistan. But choices areas should be in NWFP (now called Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) where there's some production and closer to afghanistan as well (the further West you go, the more adulterated it can get).

Pakistan is safe and people are cool & welcoming. As long as you avoid really hot places, there should be no problem.

Yup, no problem with english, lots & lots of people speak it. I've even met in the mountains some youth who cold speak english, but not urdu. no worry with that.

Sorry again for late reply,

Irie !

well, if you want to relax, then I think you should forget about afghanistan. There is war overthere...

About Pakistan, you probably won't be able to stay there for a whole year as the maximum stay is 6 months if i remember correctly. Also depends on your nationality as some are given longer visas than others. If rules haven't change, youcan extend its validity several times, up to a total of 6 months stay.

Last time I was there was in 2007 and this Pakistan is kinda no more. Lots of things have changed, and prises have risen for many things. But even so, Pakistan remains a very cheap country to travel.
What amount of money you need depends on what kind of traveller you are, but you can find rooms for 1euros to 5euros, for food you can spend also between 1 & 5 euros per day. Moving around is also very cheap, and smoking too (between 10ct & 50ct per gram, although prices might have risen since, 1€ per gram for best quality wouldn't surprise me).

sure, if you settle for work or marry a local you can stay there entire life, otherwise, there are some limits. One French friend of mine stayed about 1 year (he married a local), but he actually over-stood the legal time and ended up in jail.

When do you plan to leave ?

Been thinking... There's one way to stay for long time overthere, legally (considering international politics, living there illegally is the very last thing you want).
So, you can apply as teacher. There is the village-school option, which is rather "roots". You're housed, fed & washed, and the monthly salary is around 3000 Rupees (about 30 euros) if i remember. There are plenty of places where to do it.
Or there is the Agha Khan University in Gilgit. Last time I was there they were looking for english teacher, with monthly pay of 30.000 Rs (about 300euros). Was 3 years ago, but there's no reason not to try.

Also, last summer floods have destroyed a lot of infrastructure in the mountains, and there is certainly some way to volunteer for reconstruction help which would certainly help to stay longer.

about staying a few months, there sure is no problem with that, and cannabis-filled valleys are not hard to find for the plant grow all over the north of country.

Only... there is a BUT, or even many many would I say. Floods have wreacked havock in large parts of the country and in the mountains it means washed-away bridges & roads, which makes travelling by land more difficult, longer, and potentially more dangerous in some areas.

To reach cannabis areas, you'll have to fly. First option is going from Islamabad to Gilgit. From Gilgit you can access a whole range of different valleys of different cultures, some growing cannabis, some not.
Second option is flying from Peshawar to Chitral (also possible from Islamabad, but less reliable). In Chitral, you'll be, well..., in Chitral eheh...
The area has lots of wild cannabis, but cultivated one is quite harder to find (people are suspicious, after al it's illegal overthere...).
Life in winter overthere is harsh, know it.

If your future looks black from where you are, then think about what wrote above. Pakistan is definitely an amazing place, which can blow your mind, heart & soul. Only going there as traveller is enough to get you touched to the deepest of your self, but if while there you give some of your time & energy to help the people, then it might give you the oppotunity to grab some neat future, and why not legally settle there.

When are you planning to go ?

Irie !
