A Couple R/O Questions

heya,

Sorry if this is the wrong spot for this question but there isn't a "Water" thread that I could find and the "Search" button turned up with everything but R/O info. Probably my fault...

I'm thinking of getting a reverse osmosis system because our town started using chloramine instead of chlorine. I used to be able to let a 5gal bucket of tap water sit, uncovered overnight w/ a bubbler in it and the chlorine gas would evaporate out of solution. But this new chloramine doesn't like to exit the water. No point to using myco if the water kills it.

So my questions are - How do I replace lost [removed] minerals to the newly filtered water? And do I need to?

Next - Anyone have a recommendation as to a quality R/O system? I have a max budget of $500.

I'd like to go tankless if possible.

Thanks so much for any input!!

I'm currently growing 6 - NL#5 X Haze under 2000w [1 - 600w Hortilux super HPS + 1 - 400w Hortilux Blue MH in each of the 2 reflectors].

The photo is from a free seed from Dinafem, Auto Blue Fruit. Really tasty! The plant was tiny but covered in tricomes and beautifully colored. Thanks Dinafem!

have you had the water tested for chloramine after it has rested for 24+ hours?

I don't have to test it, facts are:

Characteristics of Chloramine
  • Chloramine is a less effective disinfectant than chlorine. The World Health Organization (WHO, PDF 145 KB) says that "monochloramine is about 2,000 and 100,000 times less effective than free chlorine for the inactivation of E. Coli and rotaviruses, respectively."
  • Chloramine does not dissipate easily compared to chlorine.
  • Chloramine stays in the water distribution system longer than chlorine.
  • Chloramine is difficult to remove.
  • Chloramine cannot be removed by boiling, distilling, or by standing uncovered.
  • Some disinfection byproducts of chloramine are even more toxic than those of chlorine, i.e. iodoacids.
  • Chloramine vapors and its disinfection byproducts can accumulate in indoor air and concentrate in an enclosed area such as a shower stall, small bathroom, kitchen, or apartment (see Toxic Showers and Baths on this website).

you can get an RO system for around $200. the minerals are replaced using CalMag

you will need some kind of tank ...... RO systems are slow. it takes about a day for me to fill a 55 gallon barrel
