A Complete Guide to Topping, Training and Pruning

I didn't read all 45 pages before posting this question, so please forgive me if the answer can be found back in this thread.

The question is, if I created a "monster" clone from a flowering mother and cloned it, would those be "monsters" too, or does each clone have to be an original branch from the flowering mother?

WOW, Simply incredible!! Downloaded and stickyed and printed. Best read I have had in years. Nice work to all who contributed. Well thought out and executed. There is only one thing here that I just don’t see an answer or link for. There have been references to Root volume (Mass), and energy potential of the plants. I understand that if you’re doing a SOG 1 gallon pots are acceptable. So my question (Which may need to go to another forum) is what sized container do we really need? I know most don’t think roots are sexy. But let’s face it you can’t do much without a solid root system. Is there a general rule for our girls? 3 vs. 5 vr. 10 vs. 23 gallon containers? Or should we always go for that 3 gallon? I am new to indoor growing. I would love to just have 4 plant’s in my XXL grow tent. I would love to see my scrog at 4 X4 for each plant =p (Yes it is a hedge). So to pull this off (hydroponically or in dirt) Do I need a container that is wide and deep? Or perhaps one that is only wide?
So much work (Great work) has been done to work around the limitations of available energy. At what point when your planning your grow do you actually decide how big or what volume of roots you’re going to need? If this has been answered on another thread I will move it there. Tho I have not located it. (Yes, I did look)
Thanks for all the Love

i always found the bigger the better i grew identical plants 1 in 3 gal 1 in 5 gal .the 5 gal grew half as much again as the 3 gal.5 gal all the way baby.but you need to try for yourself .some are saying that those airpots are very good but i have never tried them.also so many other factors to get right first and what strain you grow matters .so to sum up, get temps correct day and night ,i find this massive in any growing ,plenty of air, same again with temps keep them consistent keep the humidity correct too ,very important, light the more the better and good nutrients, never over feed and then strain whatever floats your boat some flower in 6/7 weeks others others can take 14 weeks ,it is a case of different strokes for different folks .good luck

Hi Kodiak,
Thanks for this amazing thread. It's a mine of really useful information. Professionaly set forward with clear & consise instructions. The supporting photographs & diagrams are excellent too. Kudos.
I have a question - you said (Topping and super cropping should be considered mutually exclusive) why is that? Would it be too much for the plant to apply both principles?

Hi guys,

I'm glad that you liked the guide.

Unfortunately I haven't had the time to log in and answer questions for while. For the time being, I will only log in now and then so I hope that you can help each other out.

Brownthumb, my guess is that the second clone would behave normally, but you should try it out and see what happens.

Gruetoo, using large pots in SOG sort of defeats the purpose of the technique. If you want large plants, go with large pots. If you want lots of small plants in SOG, use smaller pots. It's a question of size vs numbers, and more is always better in SOG. You only want the main cola from lots of small plants in SOG. The plants don't need a large pot for that. Pot size determines the size of the plant, as root mass equals plant mass. Some plants are better suited for SOG than others. Plants that largely favor the main cola, will be good in SOG. Harvesting the relatively large main cola from many smaller plants can add up to a lot. Finding the right kind of plant is the key to success here.

thewhitelotus, you can FIM your plants around the same time as you would top them, when the plants have 3-4 pairs of true leaves. In general, I look for secondary growth at the lower nodes before I top/FIM them. When you see new growth at the lower nodes, it's also safe to remove the main shoot. You have to make sure that the plant can grow new shoots before you top/FIM. In other words, I think that your plants are ready, since they have 5 sets of leaves already. I would let the plants veg for a few days, just so that they can catch up with the training. I never hurts to give the plants some time to adjust.

Iffy-Caradoc, I said that the techniques are mutually exclusive because the whole idea with super cropping is that you don't remove any growth at all. You just bend it out of the way. So, topping becomes unneccesary with super cropping. I believe that both methods cause the same amount of stress for the plant, so one is not better than the other in that sense. LSTing works well no matter which technique you use.

Thanks for the response Kodiak,
I get what you say completely. My intention was to 'super crop', - crack the main stalk so the uptake of nutrients is accelerated but also to trim away any small growth underneath to concentrate the growth at the tops. Is this going to stress them too much?
Regards & stay safe

Hi guys,

I just wanted to let you know that for the time being, I won't be around to answer questions (I'll be back, I just don't know when).

I hope that the guide will answer most of the things that you might need to know.

The thread is 44 pages long, so chances are that I've already answered your question on one of those pages.

Feel free to still post questions here, someone might answer them in my place.

Happy Growing,

K
