hey rise thanks for your interest, heres an update for all of the lurkers.
I am stoked on the progress thus far, the cheese is an extremely vigorous strain with barely any leave. its going to make for an easy trim! The plants are bigger than i expected for nearly a 4 week veg, most about 3.5 feet tall. only thing about the cheese that i dont care for is the lower growth, it just keeps spitting out bud sites/branches which calls for excessive stripping to focus the energy to the top nodes. however it gives me plenty of lower ring quality clones to take for the next go round.
The grandoggy purps are great, looks as if i have 3 phenotypes, the strawberry blue is a fast growing plant, looks like 2-3 phenos of that strain with some reeking more than others. and cindy 99 plants are strong and vigorous, however they threw me a curve ball with the preflowers, im used to seeing hairs before pistils and these threw out pistils and then hairs a week later... i thought the pistils were male nuts coming out but i was wrong, unfortunately i chopped the ones that i thought were males except for one which is flowering outside. makes me wonder how many others were really femies...
The cheese plants are the lanky looking ones on the left side with barely any leaves but tons of bud sites which im trying to minimize for fewer larger nugs --- one law of nature that i strongly believe in, you cannot create nor destroy energy it can only be converted. which has shown in the past that the plant diverts the energy that wouldve been used for the lower sites to the upper sites making them larger and more dense. and these plants reek with a brush against the leaves, my fingers are super sticky from stripping unwanted sites already.
The right side of the room is mainly seedlings, with some cheese in the back right( i think 12?) tall ones are strawberry blue which are showing more central growth rather than bushing out, and the GDPs are bushy as a mofo, especially the topped ones.
Pics will be of individual strains next time to show structure.
Enjoy! ill be updating about once a week to show more drastic signs in progress rather than updating every day/every other day.
I have 3Kw currently and am looking to upgrade to 6Kw. You have much more cooling than I was expecting to need. Some exceptions are that I use hydroponic nutrient in soil-less mix(sea of small bushes in earthboxes) and plan on using air cooled hoods(ballasts outside the room.) I have had success with using roughly 85 watts per foot and am planning a much more compact garden. I look forward to seeing how your garden works out.
What light controller are you using and how long was your soil fallow prior to this crop eh? What grew in it outside?
My lights are on timers that my electrician wired into the power switch panel, i can take a pic for you. The soil was used last years outdoor season and the strains were candy skunk, spacejill, purple diesel, ahh i forget the other, quite a few. I treated the soil with clearex and cannazym, turned it into a rich fluffy reusable mix and the plants seem to love it.
As for my cooling, it is a bit overboard but with adjustawings its better to go over than under. plus i got a deal on the 5ton frostbox i paid 2500 and it was only used a year, retail is 6500 but i think the previous owner paid around 4600 for it.
In my opinion its all about the most efficient gpw you can achieve, i couldve had a higher yield (possibly) with 8k but the gpw wouldve been considerably less. i think i can pull 2#per light out of here. which qould be roughly .9gpw. i hope i can get 1gpw that would be sick!
how do you like the earth boxes? how often do they require the res to be refilled? they have a wick system dont they?
I like the earthboxes as they are squat and yield much better than 5gal buckets. They not only wick(I water every other day around 2-3 gallons) but they have a large screen that air prunes the roots. I read that air pruning can increase root mass by 30%(sales literature). I attest to it working anyways as the roots stop at the screen but still grow down the wick and fill the bottom inch of the earthbox. It is good gear.
Nice space! I woulda ditched the reflectors and just gone vertical bare bulbs and added more lights. I know what your saying about the GPW but I dunno that's just my line of thinking. Seems like your stretching the lights thin as much land your trying to cover and as high as those lights are positioned. Might get some fluffy stuff or alot of larf like that. Not trying to flame ya or anything just giving my honest opinion. That ac is prob rated for about 8 lights anyways ;-) looking good though....
Thanks all-- Floridian, each different strain has its own amount of stretch that occurs naturally with a few out there that dont stretch at all. The reason the plants arent "reaching" for the lights is because of the adjustawings intensity. bare bulb fixtures put out a lot more lumens and heat than ones with glass, these hoods are considered the best out there for light dispersion.
Ohmless the EBs sound awesome id like to give them a try, ive wanted to for years just havent gotten around to it. ill keep an eye out for them. the air pruning the roots back increasing the root mass is very true, thats the idea behind cloth pots as well.
NorCal thanks for the suggestions, i was thinking about trying one side vertical next round especially with this strain and its excessive lower branching. I worked with a setup same size area only 8k on light movers that could be raised up and down and it was too much for the plants unless the lights were nearly at the ceiling. Too much light can be just as bad as too little, the bulbs are about 4 ft away from the canopy right now which for the adjustas are said to be an ideal distance. Also the wings are pinched all the way so it intensifies the light and makes up for any lower areas pretty well. I designed this room to be running around 36 plants that all get 6-7 weeks veg, making them much taller and wider. this round is 50 plants with almost 4 weeks veg because its round 1. well have to see how they turn out, i pruned them well and still going to go back again and repeat to minimize the chance of larf. stay tuned! i appreciate any thoughts or helpful critiquing +~~
I don't have any experience with adjust a wings but I would use them if I was running horizontal.
I veg under 1k horizontal (vertizontal hood) and flower with 6kw vertical (stadium/scrog).
I've never felt the need to have 1kw bulbs more than 30-36'' above the canopy at any stage with any reflector...I only average 2+ per light every 9 weeks so I probably don't know what I'm talking about
I got experience with them and regardless of what reflector your using your gonna
Get more bang for your buck if you lower them. I'm not saying you can't be successful with what your doing but it's a matter of being efficient and at that height your not being efficient with your light. Your def stretching those things way too thin.
I use the vertizontal parabolic with 1K horties and keep them at 18=24 inches max from the canopy, maybe its an illusion it must be if you get good results. You look like your around 35-40 inches above canopy
250 i just asked you an honest question i apologize if i came off the wrong way, i plan on raising plants around the 2 week mark after the stretch is finished. id rather go less light than too much with these strains as i have never grown a full room of them before. if necessary ill lower the lights a foot or so and stretch the wings out. With this being the first round im still working out where the hot spots are so i choose to play it safe. the nodes are still nice and close together but i agree i could be getting more out of the lights if they were a bit closer. as i said above i designed this room for very large plants, this round has higher numbers with smaller plants for the first round.
The next round the canopy will be at the perfect height for the lights to be fixed in place near the ceiling.
Ive been spraying them with liquid light/saturator (15ml/l) mixed with cannaboost (15ml/l) every second to third day and he daily differences are insane. they are really taking off for the beginning of week 2. pics in a few days +~~
shit dude ya got everythang there to hit those numbers and better but i would def toss the reflectors get the light in there, get a high yieldin strain ya know well and had dialed and mono crop the fuck out of the space... what cheese is done in 49days the exodus i know livers and psycosis all are 70 days can be a bit earlier 56 earliest much much much better at 9wks and 10 is perfect .... best of luck mang hpe it works out lookin foward to round 2
B-Pro you have a nice setup bro all I would do now is have a pulley system for your lights,if you want I'll splain how I have mine rigged.Hell my way is simple I dont know if it will work for you,I have an 8 by 8 room with 3 1K vertizontals.Screw an open eye hook into wood in the ceiling above the fixture and slip a pulley unto it.Mount a closed eye hook on the wall just 1/2 inch below ceiling level and screw a cleat into the wall(in stud) about chest level below the closed eye hook. You now have adjustable lights which is needed especially if you are runnung different strains at the same time
