What about the PVC cab? I'm working on a design for mine and until now was gonna build with wood.... The only thing I am unsure about is how that changes the ventilation situation....

I was gonna use ducting and a 250cfm inline on my 400wHPS to cool passively through holes in the bottom.

2 deep, 3 wide, 5 tall... what do yall think?

I saw this acrylic plastic type glass at my hardware store. Do you think it would work? Or would it eat up too much of the light?

and after smoking some SWT#3x Hz/Sk i've discovered it (EUREKA) and i just want to run my idea by you people. i don't think i'll build it verry soon but maybe some will use the info.
use pvc pipes, pvc pipe fiings and some screws and some nuts to make the suport. then velcro on the bars and the white and the black poly. the yellow bar represents where you hang your light.

this way when you move you can reuse everything with no aditional costs...

so what do you think?

I did this, almost exactly like the drawing. PVC is way too flexible, and in order to have any real support that doesn't wobble around you'll need way too many side support structures, and it becomes a real headache having to cut short pieces of PVC, getting the right fitting (and these fittings aren't cheap) and so on. If anything, 2" x 4"s are the way to go. I've tried both 1" and 3/4".

IMHO, this isn't really worth it... for a bit more, you can get yourself a HydroHut Mini which is very high quality (the pictures don't do the material justice), is re-usable, is very well designed (intakes, exhausts, Velcro'd hole covers, fan / filter mounts, waterproof removable floor, everything), can be assembled and disassembled in minutes, etc, etc, etc. Very handy especially for rental situations when you may need to take everything down for a 24h notice inspection. See how easy it'd be to take down the 2"x4" structure and put it back together, not to mention hide it easily. The extra $100 or so is WELL worth it, and it's already all done for you (not to mention like 10x higher quality, no matter how skilled you are).

If you could do this easily for $20, then you might have a contender... but for $60, chasing around parts, and labor IMO it's not even a close decision.

i dont know man i think its still a very nice idea. i got everything i need. all i need to buy is the wood. i got plenty of screws left over from other projects. i bet i can build it for less even. you dont need all that double sided tape. im sure some regular duct tape would work just to make it air tight. as for the 24hr inspection. i think hiding the structure is the least of your worries...who cares about the tent if you got 25 plants to hide or destroy. but anyways, like i said i still think its a worthy post. just my opinion...but then again im a DIYer for everything from cars to computers. if i dont know how to do it im gonna read up and do it. i dont like payin other people for their time.

For sure it's nice... in fact I was going to build one just like it to fit the dimensions I wanted (in my kitchen), until I remembered that I was renting. Sure it may be difficult to hide the plants, but if you're lucky and it happens while they're babies you can at least do something about it. It just affords you so much more flexibility. If you move to a new location for one reason or another, it's a snap to take apart and relocate. And if you decide to upgrade to something bigger or better, or move on from this hobby you can always sell it to recoup a lot of the costs, so it's an investment.

I know it doesn't really matter, but "2X4"s are actually 1.5"X3.5". Rough cut 2X4s [actually 2"X4"] are run through planers which take off 1/4" on each side to get that nice smooth finish on the 2X4s you get at home depot.

Nice design by the way!

Nice job O'Henry, you are an inspirational fellow! ! I was thinking of something similar, what size exhaust & intake would you use for this size grow?, I have a 40w,150mm/8"centrifugal intake & 180w 250mm/12" centrifugal exhaust going out, plus there is a 120mm PC fan on the 1000w cool tube going into exhaust as well plus a small stirring fan. Do you think this would be overkill for a 2 mtr by 2 mtr or about 7ft square grow similar to yours, my ambient temperature is around 20 cellsius / 68F & mid teens or 59F at night RH average this time of year is 58 day & 67 night. With lights on as well the temps are at an easy level to control but its the fans I'm worried about, trial & error I suppose! any advise? would be appreciated. Cheers from planet conehead!

Wait... why do you have the black side facing in? Great little box there though!

looking back at this from the original post i was just thinking it would be laughably easy to make that 1.5"x4' indention between the vert struts into a very nice light trapped air intake - also great place for mounting a floor!

well after taking a look around the net i believe that using pvc pipes is better because wood deteriorates with time, but pvc can be stored and reused.

i wonder if you remember all of what you were thinking there so long ago. let me walk you through how it reads [internally] to me:
[words]maybe PVC[words]
pix - immediately looking at that top right corner - realization of inspiration!

only need PVC and zip ties lol - so i was wondering what about white vs black PVC? any out gassing issues? remember PVC comes in all sorts of sizes, so I'm not worried about stability....

anyhow i got to thinking about thinking about thinking about stuff and just had to weigh in. one does need the holes.... i wonder if they would do that also at HD :D

intake

nice setup!

I just built a 4x5 foot cab out of 3/4" pvc and black/white poly and duct tape and a couple tarp zippers. It's air-tight and I had to make poly "blinds" to light-proof the zippers. I'm gonna air-cool my hood with the blower pulling air from outside the cab and through the hood, then blown outside the cab and through a DIY muffler. Now here is my question, I am exhausting the cab with a 6" blower pulling air through the cab through a passive intake, but HOW do i light-proof a passive intake??? I am new to ventilation and need to know so i can get this thing ready for action. The only light-proofing that needs to be done is this passive intake thing, which i have yet to cut. Any ideas??
