anyone care to chime in? if i cut a 6" hole to vent up into the attic and use that duct booster, is it gonna crap out and not vent enough for 400w hps?

if you are gonna upgrade later (lights) then get a 6-8" inline and run at at 75% with a dimmer/controller. will totally quiet it down.it will also be able to handle the cfm needed with the 1000w later.
the 160 does not have the power to actually produce a real efficient passive intake, and really wont move that much air at all, let alone through a filter.many people consider only the best product for their light source(i.e. factory built/store bought/for that purpose). and if i suggested you just use that fart fan but downgraded your lights to a compact flourescent 40w warm white bulb, you would laugh at me and call me a fool.
i would submit to you that the same goes for ventilation. as much should be spent/invested on a quality air flow system as is bieng spent on the lighting. if not more, especially in small places.you want to push/pull enough cfm to completey exchange all the air in your room in 2.5 minuetes or less.
true air exchange = quality
good luck

While a speed controller will lower noise, an inline will still be audible halfway down the block. Anyone in the room will hear it and ask why. The attic is another story. Combined with speed control, muffler and filter, a fan in the attic will go unnoticed.
