5 Gallon Home Depot Buckets??

G

Guest

Wsup everybody  I have a quick questions for yas. My last grow I had about 3 plants in 5 gallon home depot buckets, but my partner forgot to drill holes in the bottom for drainage. I know what a dumb ass :spank: ..Anyways, the plants turned out fine, and did pretty well...Just wondering If anyone else grows like that, and what are the pros & cons of growing that way..Shit, If I don't have to drill holes, and worry about drainage, that will be a lot more simple for me..Thanks

It sounds like you are a perfect waterer, but when you do this you can get nutrient build ups, and you can't flush before harvest (run a hose through the bucket with water for like 6 hours), very bad things.

Like Slips said...you must be the perfect waterer. No holes in the bottom no drainage. No drainage= bad for roots. Also with light watering, the roots stay shallow. Shallow roots deplete all the nutriants (sp) in the root zone causing you to have to add something like teas to feed the plants, which IMHO you should be doing anyways. Roots need air, not to be sittting in water. Let's see...save 5 or 10 minutes drilling holes and possibly have roots shallow or sitting in water or drill holes....hmmm...your choice and whatever you choose is your business...like I said...just my opinion...plus probably the #1 mistake made by folks is overwatering. I'll leave the non-drainage to the experts like Growdoc...I ain't that good or lucky.

Yeah, I usually drill holes myself, but like I said my partner forgot, so it just ended up that way. When I pulled the soil out the root ball was wrapped the soil as usual..Guess I did water pretty good, because it turned out very well. Might try it again..Thanks for your help guys...

I totally agree with the need for drainage, however I did see a feature article in HighTimes (one of the few times I've ever read it) about 4 years ago called 'Chronic Crew' in which these dudes were growing a pro indo scene of only fantastic buds in 5 gallon buckets with no drain holes. Go figure?

The proof will finally be in the proverbial pudding; does the erb taste good, does it burn to mostly white ash in the bowl? Is connoisseur class ganjah even your goal?

^^^Exactly..My buds taste as sweet as they usually taste. The quality was excellent, and the yield was off the hook(ebonically speakin). Lol, growing good bud is always my goal bro :joint: I thought it was gonna be shitty quality, and that my roots would be affected by stell water sitting at the bottom of the bucket, but it didn't. Guess it all depends on the grower :smoke:

I would also say that the roots need to oxygenate, thus the need for good drainage.
If you were letting the soil dry good before the next light watering they will do fairly well, the problem with that it that the water never really makes it to the bottom of the bucket, the roots would travel up searching for the water, when they go down, hehe,........... they are going in a natural traveling pattern, thats gotta be better. As was said before, if I'm risking anything, I'm gonna grow some BAD ASS SHIT, also why only the the roots only use 1/3 of the soil in the bucket, Let the roots use the whole bucket of soil, they will be alot happier. :joint:

When I grew in 5 gallon pales I never put any drain holes either. I would put 2 litres of water/nutes in when the plants got large and I found this was the perfect amount to saturate the promix without drowning the roots. I didn't want the mess of the waste water all over the floor. It would have been easy to put something to catch the water, but it worked out great for me for years so why change something that isn't broke? If you decide to do it this way you have to be careful not to add too much water, or too little. Also, it would be a good idea to give the plants a little under the usual dose of ferts to prevent salt build up. You can't flush clean water through without holes if you over fert by accident. It's tricky to know the right amount of water, but you don't NEED holes, it's just safer and easier. Just my 2 cents. Good luck!

^^^^My point exactly..Thx for the comment TGT. If you know what your plants need and how much water/nutes, then you're good to go. Shit, I would've never did this, but my partner forgot to drill holes at the bottom. I'm not lazy when it comes to my lil whores;), but I justed wanted to try it and see how it turned it. It turned out so well, I had to start a thread about it. Anyways, thanks for everyones comments..

when i plant bushes in 5 gallon buckets, i usually water every 4-6 days w/ 1 gallon of mixed water/nutes.
no problems, but they have to have sufficient root mass to handle that water.
no holes here

I accidentally did that to one bucket this last time. I ran out of 5 gallon buckets so I resorted to using a 3 gallon kitty litter bucket, but forgot to drill holes for drainage. The plant turned out just fine and completely filled out the bucket. I was worried though because drainage is very important to root zone quality.

holes in a different place

holes in a different place

I have some large plants that need watering almost every day. I am going to try and put them in 5 gal buckets with 3 or 4 holes about 2 inches from the bottom. Kind of like a hempy bucket. Rationale is that the watering might only be required every other day since there is a "reservoir" in the bottom. Enough to get the plant through a hot day but not enough to drown roots. As fast as the plant takes up water the reservoir won't be there too long. Every other day watering beats every day watering when the temps and humidity are in the 90's and I am hauling 40 to 60 gallons of water.

You must have a very large grow to use up 40 to 60 gallons of water a day. With my 4 X 1000 watt grow I use about 20 gallons a day at the peak part of growth, and I thought that was a lot of water. Are you growing in doors or out as you stated you have to haul the water? And, did you mean your humidity is also in the 90's?
