suffocation is the most balanced and impressive band i ever seen live .

possessed in the 80's was the very best along with whermach and cryptic slaugther .

seen celtic frost in the 80's and 2 years ago and they are still top notch

Respectfully, I must disagree with ya.
The mix you linked too sounds pretty muddy.. someone boosted the upper bass to match up with crappy commercial speaker systems.

Lars' bass drums, on this record at least, have a really low fundamental tone and you need a well-damped (low system Q, a measure of the bandwidth of the resonant peak) subwoofer system with good extension (flat to 30hz or lower) to hear and feel what's really happening. that's my opinion.

Pre-1990 Metallica definitely goes on my list of the best.

i agree, ive seen them many times over the years.
i wanted to say. between the buried and me is fucking amazing, and puts on some of the best shows. on a huge stage or a small one, it always sounds great. listen to the great misdirect, if u want more in your face metal check their early shit, the silent circus. i strongly suggest any of their cds, they are a band that progresses and have gotten better over time.

Yeah man gorgoroth are a great band, the real gorgoroth that is "pentagram" and the early albums, not the later line up the wanker king ov hell and the poser ghaal, im glad to hear infernus won the rights to the band name in court ...afterall he did form the band. You heard the latest gorgoroth album? Frank watkins from obituary on bass!

Well the subject is top 5 metal of all time not whats is youre personal favourite top 5.In that sense you would have to look at sabbath/ozzy metallica maiden slayer priest motorhead pantera the bands that brought metal and forged the way for the rest.Impossible task though. Personally i was never a big fan of maiden and priest but you cannot denie they should be at or near the top of such a list.Anyways my top 5 would be metallica slayer pantera motorhead and sabbath /ozzy and as a sixth wildcard im gonna throw the misfits into the mix.I know people will say that they are punk and whatnot but the influence theyve had on the punk/metal scene cant be overlooked.

I see we're branching off from the norm, i guess ill bite:

#1 All That Remains - anything from 'fall of ideals' or the newer stuff, rare that i find a metal band with THIS much good material.

#2 Slipknot - From their costumes to their insanely well done performances and good songs, theyre like kumbaya, not hard to play, but damn catchy, and we will always love corey for his enormous neck.

#3 System of a Down - the lyrics are/were funny AND thought provoking, good stage presence, and who uses a SITAR in metal and gets away with it? oh yes, these guys. bravo.

#4 Apocalyptica - Their english is engrish. The whole auditorium goes quiet listening to the main speakers' attempt at the language, deciphering it as code. But when they play, it's a symphony of metaaaaalllll yarr.

#5 too many to list, but a few make the list, as i lay dying, devil driver, the autumn offering, trivium, bullet for my valentine, avenged sevenfold etc....

keeping with the metalcore/power-speed metal theme

but i listen to everything...just felt like contributing

don't forget about the european scene.... bands like emperor, dimmu borgir, mayhem, meshuggah , they may not be huge in America, but in EU they kill it
