400w CMH or 600w HPS?

Using a Coolstar magnetic ballast with each over a 3 x 3 E & F tray what bulb the 400w CMH or a 600w HPS Hortilux would give the best results?

Is there anyway you could use both? The only reason I ask is you say that each will be over a tray..... My plants seem to be loving the dual spectrum; I am planning on getting a 600W HPS to replace my 400 soon.

I would guarantee that the 600w HPS would yield higher. I have run the Phillips CMH bulbs, they are great for veg and early flower, but 90,000 lumens from a 600w HPS, and 28,000 lumens from a 400w CMH? I don't care if the CMH has a 96 CRI and the HPS only has 30 CRI, the HPS will yield higher.

For a 3x3 table, go with the 600. I run a 400 watt CMH in a cab that has a tray 2X3. You will get a better yield from the 600.

My question is, would 2 400 CMH bulbs yield more than one 600 HPS? There's the lumen relevancy debate and the proof of a 600HPS -vs- 400 CMH side by side for yield. Then there's the quality debate as well. Either way, if it comes down to $$, then the 600 is probably the best bet.

I would think you'd yield a lot more with 2 x 400s vs. 1 x 600.

not even close :) i've tried it... 60,000 lumens vs 90,000? u decide

I will say that a single 600w HPS will give a significantly higher gram per watt than dual 400s, though the yield will be similar. I have run dual 400w CMH, dual 400w HPS, and a single 600w in a Darkroom tent. If you are able to get a Lumatek ballast and Ushio 600w bulb, I would be certain that it would yield higher than two 400w CMH,
