400/250

Okay, say you ran the same clones in 3 gal pots, under a 250
And then ran the same amount of the same clones, again in 3 gal pots, but under a 400

If the nutes, veg time, light cycles, amount of ventilation, etc, all the factors were the same except for the light used, would the 400 really produce all that much more?

With the 250 your looking at an average .75-1 oz's per plant maybe a lil more depending on strain.

With the 400 It is more like 1.5-2 ozs per plant...

so yea quite a bit a difference. The 250 is more for personal growing/personal use, and self gratification. The 400 is a little more commercial and should be used if you plan on making extra $. The 250 will require SOG, or LST or HST... where as the 400 most likley won't unless you don't have a decent amount of space.

But also rememebr with the 400 you need A LOT better ventalation for the plants AS WELL as there will be a lot more smell to cover up and you'll need more space overall. If this is fine iwth you, get the 400, if not get a 250 with a 270 bulb.

sorry to get off topic here...but what is the difference in the heat given off?

Suprisinlgy there is a pretty big difference. This mainly depends on the ballast/manufacturer/eco/hydro but on an average basis I would guess the 400 can creat more than a few degrees of difference.

Unless you get a complete peice of shit the 250 really only needs a fan, and a door left open for ventalation. The 400 will need exhast tubing and fans... and so forth. the more heat the more smell (plus bigger buds) so more odor control too.

I wasn't able to hook up some exhast tubes or scrubbers or any of that mess so I stuck with a 270 and I have hardly any smell (there is some still), and I just have a fan and leave the door open while its on and My temps stay 70 during the day and around 65 at night. It is winter though....

wow 2oz per plant under 400 watt HPS, I'd love to reach that..

Yes, I suppose I went a little high on that one... but you know, I have seen it done A LOT. Of course by seeing I mean reading, and I guess poeple can stratch the truth a little. Hell I have seen a few posts on here where 2 ozs were dont with a 250 hps lol.

It all depends though, if you have a decent strain and a high tech system with some co2 pumps and good circulation not to mention some good nutes, 2 ozs with a 400 per plant should'nt be that hard... although that co2 sure is expensive...

My estimates are definatley not based a novice grower... or every strain for that matter. In my experience (maybe its because I am broke and refuse to pay more than 50$ for some seeds) It really isn't what you grow it is how you grow it.

Let me tell you light certainly does make a big difference. You will get more bud sites in a shorter amount of time, and more plants can be put under the bigger light.

Here are 35 Sour Bubble and Blue Moon Rocks vegging under 1k of light at almost 6 weeks from germination. I could never do this with smaller wattage lights. I will probably finish of up to 16 plants under each of these lights and pull 1.5 or more pounds per light easy.

1.5 pounds. Jesus christ man that is like over 20 years in prison, why would you try something like that lol! I guess if you have means or even a lisence...

Pots vary among people so 1 gal per 2 feet of plant is a good rule of thumb. Transplanting to me though is one of the most important yet under estimated steps in vigirous growth as well as good yeild. Plants that were transplanted only once or not at all will most likley not be comparable to one that is transplanted 3-4 times. It does create stress so instead of maybe tightening the ropes one day you transplant and leave be.

What I do:

Start out in shot glasses, it is the best methos I have found so far. Holes are no good because a seed can and should have VERY moist soil, and it should hold in liquid. When they sprot about 3 days (when I see roots in the bottom tranplant to a 1 pint, then when they are 3 inches, go to a half gallon, when 5 inches go to gallon until desired hieght until you want to flower, when switch to 12/12 tranfer to 3 or 5 gallon pots, depending on room.

Wow I really typed a lot, forgive meh the bud I just got has a weird creeper high, feels nice though...

Those are vegging in 2 gal pots and I will use the double pot method to finish in flower. You guys should try it, works great.

How about 1.5 lbs or more per light x 4. been doing it for over 25 years, no problem.

No light mover on those vegging plants either. Its hard to tell in that photo with the flash, but 1k lights penetrate all the way down. I'm talking sunglasses required. No heat sources in the room either except the bulb. One big ass grow chamber.

Hey when you double pot do you cut the bottom out of the 2 gal pots or just hope the roots will grow out of the drainholes?I guess when you water you just saturate the 2 gal p[ot all the way through and then saturate the soil in the 4 or 5 gal pot all the way through also?

I found a big difference in heat from 250-400. I had to get a Super fan to vent, but I grow in 8 square feet. Yield increased, but when I added back the 250, so a 400w HPS and a 250MH heat was not noticebly different (good fan) but the yield and QUALITY jumped exponentially. If U have the room, or not enough depending on how U look at it, go for a 250 HPS and a 250 MH during flower.

Unicorn, I was thinking that too...but I was just dropping by to comment on the lighting. 2Oz per plant seems small, and mine are 2" tall (C99), but like I said Iim interested in growing in general not just hydro.
Once they get more lighting in there that'll help.

I should be more specific. Under just 400W (no CO2) you should be getting at least 6-7 oz. 6x28.5/400w=.4275 grams per watt. Some better growers than I, with the right strain get over 1.0 gram per watt, so embleshiments aside, shoot for at least .5 gram per watt and you'll get it eventually.
Per plant, well that depends on number of plants, size, genes etc. I used to grow 8 plants in the same space I grow 3 now, yields keep climbing, same clones, what has changed is #1 growing techniques..LST, Scrog.
#2 amount of light. Not the other way around.
Good Luck!

What do you think I'll get with a 270 super agro HPS of 4 Nirvana White Rhinos that are slightly LST'd (tied so branches can reach to light), using good ferts with good water, very good circulation? Plants are about 2.3 feet and are in 3 weeks flower in 3 gallon pots with rich soil / 30% perlite. I have about 30 lower bud sites....and I cut off all the very bottom sites (2-4 on each plant) , fan leaves (four on each plant). No co2.

I am always curious as to what people will guess my outcome will be. If I find someone is is real close, I will probably continue to ask them throughout my grows.

Man that's virtually impossible to tell. I have never grown White rhino. Even with my clones I have been growing for 2.5 years I get variations of up to 30 grams, but then again I am always striving for more. I can usually guess within an ounce after 3 weeks into flower with these strains...but I think a lot of people can do that.
I think the most I ever got off of my 250, before I upgraded, with c99, was about 80 grams. I went with a 400 the very next grow. Thats way before I LST'd in veg and then scrog'd in flower like now. U'rs could be higher, especially if they are clones.
