3 Day old Seedlings - opinions?

These seedlings are somewhere between 72 - 80 hours old.

My box is VERY hot right now. I believe that 84 - 90 seems to be the avg temp for most of the day. I believe the problem is my ambient ait temperature, more than my fan. The rooms Air temp seems to be 77 degrees.

I do not have A/C, access to an AC unit, and do not have money to spend on one at the moment - although I am looking for something used to set up in the room.

Is there anything I can do to help these seedlings cope with the high heat?

How do these seedlings look for 3 days old?

seedlings look fine man

What kind of light are you using a small cfl, say 15 w, would be adequate right now for a light source, they do not need much, this early in their lives

Good luck with your grow

Thank-you for the reply. I was concerned since its my first grow, and I really do not know much. They look healthy, and feel strong (for their tiny size).

I was mainly concerned if the rate of growth seems acceptable.

Right now I have 8 - 26 watt CFL's running. In about 15 minutes I will only have 2/3/4 running.

Can you offer me a guideline, or way to judge when my plants will need more wattage?

Hey Matty, those babies look fine dude...but listen to Dr Dog, they only need like 23 watts of CFL's right now in their lives...Let 'em get bigger & start to grow 2nd, 3rd & so on sets of leaves...Put a little fan on them to strengthen the stems and bring ur temps down...Then just let em do their thing, and read as much here as u can...We'll be keepin an eye oin you bro, aslk as many q's as u wish...My door is always open...Peace bro

they look fine, and after you switch off a few of those lights the temps will come down. then you can start working on better air exchange.

I had switched to 4 CFL's last night. Today with an ambient room temp of 77f the box temp was stable at 82f. I will switch down to two CFL's, for more even light distribution instead of one.

Zues - I have several old computer fans (mostly 80mm), I will set up a couple to blow on the plants, to help strengthen the stems.

I also have a nice high flow 120mm fan that I can put on the air inlet, to help increase total air flow.

In the past 2 - 3 weeks I have been reading LOTs on these forums, more then I usually would in 2 - 3 months. My reading has slowed, but I am still reading a fair bit, and will continue reading. This site is great, it is a plethora of invauluable information.

I ordered a moisture meter to help me judge when to water (till in time, when I learn to just well on my own). I have been setting the cups in a container of water to flood them from the bottom up. The soil mix has very good drainage, and LOTS of holes in the bottom of each cup.

Does someone have an easy way for a first timer to judge when they need water?

If I could know the cut off point, just once - when the soil is too dry, then I could easily just tell by sticking my finger in the soil. Say putting some of the soil in a paper towel and seeing if it pulls any moisture our? or some other trick?

I appreciate everyones input :)

Hey matty, Your excited about your grow and thats good. IThose seedlings look good and your soil mix looks good as well. A easy way to tell when they need water is to feel or lift up the pots that the plant is in then you can see when they are light feeling or stick your finger into soil about 1/2" and feel if the soil is damp. I use to do this when I was just starting out. Now After a couple grows I could start to tell when they needed water by watching them droop slightly and then after a watering the perk right back up within 5-10 minutes. Lots of reading on these forums helped me and Its so much fun to look at other peoples grows too. Check you out later bro.

The only surviver out of 10....I was determind to keep this Lil Bitch alive. After talking to it, and carrying it around, taking it for walks outside in the sun, it finally came back. In fact her and a few of her clones have yielded me some fine smoke.

This is the final run of my WW till I restock with new gear.

a little care may do the trick....good luck

Movintarget - Thanks for posting those pics, showing such a tiny plant, and then showing she turned out ok :D

Pirate138 - They "seemed" green to me, and they have gone a few shades darked since. I will likely post an update pic or two later this evening. What is seedling starter?

My soil mix for the seedlings is just:
2 parts potting soil
1 part Vermiculite
1 part Perlite.

waiting is the hardest part, you want to have them huge right away, kind of why clones are great for starting, but the anticipation from seed to smoke is great.

Just let them dry out, then they need water
Basically you lift teh cup, it feels empty you water, simple as that, it will be a while before new seedlings need a drink, could be a couple weeks, don't panic, when you see roots coming out bottom, then it is time to give them some water low nute feeding

Dr. Dog ~ Waiting does seem to be the hardest part, but that is actually a good thing; the rest is not too difficult :D

For the clones, I knew how you can cut many of them, and I knew about the time savings, but now I can REALLY appreciate said time savings.

The plants are 8 days old and seem to be doing quite well.

I had not seen them for about 3 days (not sure which, Im quite tired). The past two days included VERY long shifts at work - Up and heading out last minute, home after the plants are sleeping. But I watered the plants JUSt before hand, so they seem really good.

Pirate 138 - Upon re-evaluation, I would say the color is a yellowish green. Mainly green, but quite light, underlying hint of yellow.

Dr. Dog - I now have roots coming out the bottom of the cups - just slightly - between barely showing, and 1/8th inch. For "Low Nute feeding" Can you recoment a diluted strength of ones normal level? (IE 1/4 or 1/2 etc ?)

So far things looks GREAT to me :D

Also I had a tall, tower fan - tall cylender, instead of the old 3 blade style. It fit inside my grow box perfectly, so I just put that in to blow on the plants (less work to install than computer fans).

Is there a school of thought on when to run fan that blows on the plants? (one that is to toughen them up I mean).

IT looks like my plants are starting to kick it into second gear.

These pics were from just before I started low nute feeding. I am running Shultz 10-15-10 at 1/4 strength for now.

This is at 10 days old :D

Things are looking good. One thing i would do the next time around though is use more soil in those cups. I fill mine up to the top almost.

These are at fourteen days or less from germination in rapid rooters , i cant remember.

Thanks, the soil level had crossed my mind (after planting).

The soil was a half an inch or 3/4" higher, until watering.

Any advice on when to switch them to the larger pots?
